How to improve Skyrim:

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:07 pm

Saddening. I think I speak for a lot of people when the flaming the OP is doing is quite repelling. I kindly ask tombofsoldier to sheath his silver tongue.

Anyways, I insist that the beth community stop taking such a pessimistic stance on this whole game. We do not have adequate knowledge to judge this game yet.

Remember, people, Beth devs may read your posts, so keep that in mind before you go flame. Don't turn off the devs. Be nice.

To be fair the first post wasn't really being all complain-y about what is in the game so far, the OP was simply listing things they would like to see in the game. whether they are already in or not we will have to wait (too long!) to see. But I see no reason why we can't still list things we would like to have in Skyrim. I think everyone needs to lighten up a little. Get into the excited and speculative mood. I know it is early but it is never too early to psych yourself out for what is sure to be a great game. ;P

Anywho, to the OP I like most of your ideas you have there. A lot of those were things that were fixed through mods for Oblivion as far as mechanics and some of the graphics options. And I am sure the Bethesda team played a lot of mods so they will have already seen some of these things the community made for themselves.

As for perks, I agree I would like to see something like a skill tree. Not too overdone though to where you have to specialize specifically in something, I don't want to miss out on other skills and perks. So skill trees are a good idea, but not too limiting or that would defeat their whole purpose of having the perks to customize your character.

Also, completely agree with whoever said the animations of the horses needs to be cleaned up from Oblivion. Play Red Dead Redemption and you will see the glaring differences. This is assuming they even have brought back horses... It is possible mounts are something else, like mountain rams or elk or something equally "exotic" and befitting the environment. Either way I will be happy with mounts, and use them no matter what. Because while I loved pretty much everything about Morrowind... it took way too long to go anywhere and Oblivions horses made exploring easier for me.

Decoration may seem like a trivial thing but I spent so many hours fighting with the grab button to decorate my castle.... and those wall weapon racks... mocking!... Only the thin katana like blades fit, and it made me very sad. I would like to be able just to select where I want to place an object, select the object and rotated it and place it. Done deal, and now I have a decorated home/ whatever. Also, I would love them to include armour stands. I want to see my pretty armour I spent all kinds of ridiculous time collecting, not stick it in a cupboard in one of my houses. :D

I suppose that is all I have for suggestions. Either way I will be happy with the game I am sure.

Some good points here, but it is best not to hope for anything too spectacular.

Looking back over Bethesda games from Morrowind all you can conclude is that they have never, ever reinvented the wheel, they just evolve slightly from game to game. Oblivion was fantastic, but equally a disappointment in that it was clearly rushed and incomplete.

So the only thing I hope they do for Skyrim is put in everything they want to, if they can honestly say they did that then I guess it shall be as good as they can possibly make it and that's all we can ask for! Would be a crime if this game too was absent genre standard features.

Add mannequins to the game so I have somewhere to store my armors. Mannequins are a must. Who puts armor in chests and closets? ;)

But I'd rather see Skyrim delayed another year and have it be a great game, than rushed and not live up to something I can call a TES game.

Overall I'd suggest light index deffered : http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46371

Multiple lights and removal of a lot of transparency issues with no need to render geometry twice. True, light overlaps becomes complicated, but with the setting it's not likely to happen anyway. That, SSAO, two sided leaf/vegation lighting model, and screenspace subsurface scattering should stop anyone complaining about the lighting. Though cloud shadows would be cool and Crytek's trick of expanding the HDR to 17.8bit precision would help on the 360.

None of us are in any position to say how to "improve" it seeing as we know very little about how it feels to actually play the game.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it before... but being able to see your own reflection in the water, and perhaps in mirrors in the game, would be really cool. And not in the vague "I see something" kind of way it seems to look in Oblivion either.

Since I play exclusively in 1st person view, that would be about the only way I'll ever get to see myself outside of the chargen sequence unless I deliberately turn the camera on myself for a screenshot.

Bows:

Didn't really have much variety in terms of what ranged weapons you could get in Oblivion. I'd love to see different kinds of bows, give some choice and variety to it all. Reload: general speed to knock a new arrow. Damage: duh. Range: how fast and far the arrow flies. Accuracy: the “weapon spread” Arrow shoots towards the aimed direction with a tiny random offset. No worries about it being “[censored]” as it works in dedicated shooters just fine. Accuracy reduction while moving: The increase in weapon spread when moving.

Short bow:
Reload, medium. Damage, medium. Range, short. Accuracy, medium. Accuracy reduction while moving, low.

Long bow:
Reload, slow. Damage, medium. Range, high. Accuracy, high. Accuracy reduction while moving, medium.

Great bow:
Reload, very slow. Damage, high. Range, very high. Accuracy, high. Accuracy reduction while moving, high.

Graphics: Always have to mention something about this, nerd that I am. If the developers want people (on the consoles) oohing and awing about lighting they should consider this technique from Cryengine 3. It should make the console bloom/colors brighter and more colorful.

As for the pc, I'd love to see HDR stored in an Fp24 texture. Fp32 is often accused of being too colorful anyway. That and I'd love to see (texture format), fast and accurate occlusion culling, and efficient DX11 multicore rendering. Remember, you guys have more customers on the pc. Yes I keep harping on that, but just because the popular trend is to think of consoles as the primary platform doesn't mean you have to buy into it.
