How improved is the 3rd person view?

Post » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:44 am

One thing that I really disliked in the previous Elder Scrolls game was the 3rd person view and it's animations.
I didn't feel I was a part of the world in the game because it looked like I was gliding and the animations wasn't impressive at all.

Is there any interview that I might have not seen or video interview, gameplay footage that tells me if they have put any heart into the 3rd person view and the animations for non-combat and in-combat?

I am one of those who do in fact enjoy 3rd person view and there is many that don't - but to be honest.. I think both 1st person view and 3rd person view should get as much as love as the other, right.
But what I just said, was probably said before the previous Elder Scrolls game and in that game the 3rd person view as I just said, was awful and it's animations for running, walking and fighting.
Too plain, too simple and too disconnected with the world (when you are gliding over the landscape in a world without gravity).

I just wanted to mention that while I did feel like I was gliding across the ground in Oblivion, that was standard for the time. Every game did that, so it didn't stand out as particularly bad. It's just how things were done.

I prefer playing in third-person in Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3, and FONV. I'll prefer playing in third-person in Skyrim as well. I'm not a big fan of first-person perspective and I don't roleplay as myself, I roleplay as watching the character living his/her life, so first-person is inappropriate, but I use it from time to time to aim my crosshairs, whether to shoot an arrow or pick up a specific item.

Oblivion's third-person wasn't great, but it was improved in Fallout 3, so it's not really a concern. Skyrim's looks great, judging by the trailer, so again, I'm just more reassured.

I'd also like to say that third-person mode is VERY important to me, and I'd be really upset if any future TES game excludes it. I don't care how popular first-person is to the majority of people. I want to be able to see my character.

I have never played any Fallout games. So I'm a bit concern because in TES: Oblivion while moving you was really, really fast and when viewing from a 3rd person view.. for me at least it felt like I was gliding and there was no gravity.

So my hope is that there will be a feeling that my character have some gravity in TES: Skyrim. So I don't feel like I'm in space no more, he he.
And that when I run, it won't feel like gliding or moving with the "speed of light".

Drastically improved. I've always preferred 3rd person view. The only time I use 1st person is to examine objects and surrounding or admire the world.

does this help?

"Bethesda's games have sometimes been criticised for their awkward character models and arthritic animation, but that should be moot once Skyrim resets your expectations. Switching to third-person (you can play the game in first or third), it's immediately clear that the protagonist's movements hold their own against any other third-person adventure. All the NPCs do likewise"

You know, I think the issue with movement in Morrowind and Oblivion is that you...didn't accelerate. At all. You'd just tap W and suddenly be sauntering along at your character's full speed.

Although I agree that character animations are important, I don't believe they are the only important aspect of an improved 3rd person perspective, as this poll seems to imply.

I feel that the most important aspect that they can change would be to make the camera freely pan-able as it is in games like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, and all of the Splinter Cell games. Note that I mean "pan-able" in the specific way it's done in these games: the camera can be panned while you are moving without any other button having to be pressed as it is in Morrowind, Oblivion, FO:3, and FO:NV. To me this is especially essential for me to finally play as a truly stealthy character since I'm so used to the way stealth works in Splinter Cell in particular.

I am essentially the same way in my play style.

I usually play 99.9999999999999999% of the time in 1st person view but I do hope that 3rd person is similar to FO3 with the ability to move the camera angle so that we can look at our characters face.

Probably a couple seconds on the E3 demo.
I always play in first person, so it doesn't bother me as much. But the third person animations were horrible.

In one of the interviews with Todd he said Skyrim's 3rd person will be "competitive with other third person games".

Had problems with third question.

I don't know anyone who cares about 3rd person, but it's not "no importance at all" or "VERY important" for me - I use it a great deal for admiring new armor & screenshots. But not at all for actually playing.

I think that there's some 3rd person gameplay in the trailer... Only a guy walking for 2 seconds though.

Why take it away from those who use it just because you don't want it? Anyway I hope 3rd person animations are improved, I hope there up to rdr standards

Not so important with free panning camera, however 3rd person in Oblivion was broken past belief for one simple reason: your head was in the way of the crosshair, even talking to people was hard as your body blocked the view of them, trying to talk to a shopkeeper was dangerous as you had to watch it so you don't picked up something in front of him and got accused for stealing. picking flowers or small items of the floor was also hard as your body covered it.
Trying to hit somebody with ranged magic was totally hopeless for the same reason.

It was infinitely better in Fallout 3, I did not like the off centre system much however being able to see the target made it useable who in it self is infinitely better than Oblivion/ Morrowind.
3rd person worked well in melee however trying to cast a spell on the opponent after jumping away was hopeless and looting was frustrating.

I don't think the gliding movement feeling in Oblivion was a problem. I actually would rather not have head bobbing and all that. As an example, between Turok 1 & 2 for the N64, I'd prefer Turok 1's smoothness of movement. Turok 2's waddling back an fourth like a duck became cumbersome after a while.

I laughed at how if you ran "diagonally" it would just play the animation for running forward but your character would slide over the ground sideways....uggg so terrible
