How do i Instal FOSE?

Post » Tue Jun 01, 2010 11:02 pm

Alright so I want to install Fallout wanders edition and Real time settler which need FOSE but when i tried to install it ruined a anaimation of a gun mod i already had installed and when i installed RTS it still didnt work so i think i have installed it wrong. Now I installed it so FOMM would run it so i put it in my load order. So any help on how to install it and still allow me to use FOMM would be of great help.

RTFM.
Which is to say, read the manual.

From the readme.

[ Installation ]

1. Copy the .dll files and fose_loader.exe to your Fallout 3 directory. This is usually in your Program Files folder, and should contain files called Fallout3.exe, FalloutLauncher.exe and the G.E.C.K. (if installed).

Nothing to it :)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. FOSE has to be in your Fallout 3 directory to work, but once it's installed FOMM will automatically detect it and launch Fallout 3 via the FOSE launcher.

In short without the sarcasm from the peanuts gallery.

Install FOSE, if using FOMM. Simply double click your FOMM to open it as per usual and then you will see at the top "Launch FOSE". So yeah that's it and all you do to get it working.

After you launch using the FOMM way it runs a command screen for a split second and the game starts as per usual with all your FOMM mods in the same load order etc etc.

Enjoy.

Fallout3.exe is in the Fallout 3 folder, not the Fallout 3/Data folder.

http://fose.silverlock.org/ definitely comes with a bunch of dll's. Should be installed as explained in the readme/as quoted in the post above.

If you're completely new to compressed files, see File Compression and Unzipping to a temporary directory in the http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=972878. FOSE comes in a .7z archive - I'd recommend either 7-Zip or WinRar as archiver utilities as they can manage virtually all different archive formats. See FAQ for download links.

The files you need are a few folders within the the download file.

I've you've already "un-zipped" the fose download file into your FO3 exe folder then there's probably a folder in there now called fose_v1_2_beta2. All the actual fose files are in there. These need to be moved into the folder with the fallout exe in it.

Alternately when you open the fose download archive file you should see fose_v1_2_beta2 listed inside. Double click on this within the 7zip window to open the folder and access the files inside. Again copy these to the C:\games\fallout 3\ folder (where there should be a fallout3.exe file).

Here's a list of the files:

fose_1_0.dllfose_1_1.dllfose_1_4.dllfose_1_4b.dllfose_1_5.dllfose_1_6.dllfose_1_7.dllfose_1_7ng.dllfose_command_doc.htmlfose_editor_1_1.dllfose_editor_1_5.dllfose_loader.exefose_readme.txtfose_whatsnew.txtsrc

It's more that this is like level 0 stuff. Boxes of food don't include "Step 1: Open packet" in the cooking instructions.

I do not know what you've downloaded, but it isn't 7-zip.

Try downloading 7-zip from this site: http://www.7-zip.org/

You have to install 7-zip after downloading it before you can use it to unzip the fose file.

Ok, so i dont do this a lot, but ffs man. Why even post a comment like that? Would have taken you roughly the same amount of time saying: "unzip the file you downloaded, copy the .exe and all .dll's to the fallout folder."
Instead you chose to post a comment that is completely useless to the OP and in addition makes it look like he hasnt tried.. Maybe he has, maybe he hasn't.. not everyone is that familiar with puters..

I know there are a LOT of these types of questions on here.. but why be a jerk about it?

Telling someone to read the readme is a general comment that, while snarky, will help the user install any mod. Giving the instructions directly is specific to FOSE, which is different from pretty much everything else. It could have been phrased more politely, but personally I would rather have responses be more helpful than more friendly.

Be fair - the manual SAYS unzip the files and put them in the fallout folder. If the OP can't install FOSE, which has a readme that tells them what to do, they're going to seriously struggle to install any mods that actually use it.

It's a habit people need to get into. If he downloads something, can't figure it out, then posts asking for help and we hand-hold him he learns nothing. The next time he runs into a problem he'll come here again, and then the next, and he'll waste a lot of his time waiting for replies. If nobody replies at all, then he's stuck and can't use the mod.

It's much more important to try and get people into good habits than try and keep them in a good mood.

Actually that was the equivalnet of sitting on your fishpole while telling him to get lost.

I get all that. Just well.. Seems the less jerky way to achieve that would have been to say nothing at all.

I agree that OP needs to learn to install things like this, and needs not to be handheld, but you do catch more flies with honey than vinegar,. OP can be taught to follow instructions without the vinegar.

OP: Extract the FOSE files to your fallout 3 main directory (folder), do not extract to a subfoder. but TBH the readme's are there for a reason, please take a little more time fully reading them and rereading them if need be. I can't count the times i did that when i first started installing mods. Eventually i learned, and you will too.

If that's what has to be done, then sure. If one refuses to learn, what else can you do but refuse to teach? Pointing someone in the right direction lets them keep their dignity yet gain the knowledge they need to continue.
