How to install FO 1?

Post » Thu Dec 24, 2009 3:37 am

Ok, I can't get Fallout 1 to run on my machine. My specs are: WinXP SP2, nVIDIA 9800GT (cool huh?), 2GB RAM, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ at 2.21 GHz. So, I install Fallout (humongous installation, around 650 MB), but when I click install, a popup reads "A newer DirectX is available on this CD, etc...". It is reffering to DirectX 3a...which is strange, because I have DircetX 9c, and I run Crysis and Fallout without problems... On the DirectX scan on the CD, it reads that I don't have Direct3D (strange...)... And after the install and patch application, when I click the .exe file of the game, the screen goes black...and on to the desktop i emerge... Does anyone have any advice??? I'd be mighty appreciative.

Never heard of that particular kind of problem.

You can always try at NMA, they usually have the technical solutions for all your problems.:

Or try applying the lastest patches as show in my sig.

You shouldn't actually need them, but have you tried any of the compatibility modes?

i was logging in here to ask the exact same question , not sure how to make a CD install do a compatability thing but i did determine that its the Auto-play thats at fault. skip it. explore the cd and choose the second (larger) Install file. this successfully installed the game on my computer! yay!

ok still having issues..got the game files installed , installed the patches and now its crashing out when i try to start it...sigh.

does anyone have a Reliable method for installing this game on an XP machine??

What version of Fallout do you have? I have the one on the GSP White Label collection and I also recall Fallout 1's installation "updating" some DirectX files (it didn't even ask me whether or not to proceed). However I've been assured that it doesn't downgrade your DirectX copy, I later checked and all my files were still up-to-date.

Install Fallout then patch 1.1 official or 1.2 unofficial ...then set compatibility for win 95..

I tried everything, no luck :( I'm gonna try on NMA, but your opinions are still welcome...

And I did everything, installed patches 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3! Then I "reinstalled" DirectX and set the compatibility mode for Win 95.....

Hmm then from what I've heard Fallout 1 can "not" run on "some" dual core computers (I have no experience with AMD Athlon)...or the graphic card is too new ...this is all I know so maybe ....you can scavenge some old PC...

Theres no reasom why it shouldn't work, I also have a dual core processor PC with a very new video card at home and it works fine, althought I must say I had trouble before patching it and so on.

Have you tried asking at NMA? They are usually used to solving these compatibility problems.
