How to justify the Daedric quests for a morally good charact

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 10:05 am

I happened upon a certain Daedric quest totally by accident and didn't realize it WAS a Daedric quest until the very end. So in that particular case, I have a clear conscience.

The only problem with placing the artifacts in a vault is that the artifacts will return to Oblivion anyway. There's really nothing that can be done to stop an artifact from returning to Oblivion (Except what was done to turn Azura's Star into the Black Star).

I've gone from doing only Azura and Meridia to doing them PLUS Mehrunes Dagon - because I can basically tell Dagon "NO!", kill some daedra (two Kynval, two Churls) and loot his shrine for some nice stuff.

Just consider it as the ends justifying the means. If you don't get the artifacts, somebody else will - somebody who will actually use them to do the princes bidding. Even in the cases where you can destroy the artifact, destroying it only sends it back to oblivion, which merely gives the daedric prince the opportunity to send it back on their whims. If you collect the artifacts, you can put them somewhere safe where they can do no harm to the world. It can take several hundred years before an artifact naturally returns to Oblivion, so if you're so inclined, go dump them at the bottom of the ocean.
This works for several IMO. Boethia's sacrifice as long as you find someone 'evil'. Only Namira is truly evil only. Molag Bal and Vaermina you can claim demonic possession.

Azura, Malacath, Meridia, Hirrcine, Sheogorath, and Sanguine's Quests aren't really evil, a good person could do those quests with no problems. Sheogorath is insane I mean he's the mad god but his quest isn't necessarily evil, Pelagius is insane so helping him out is a good thing.

Daedra are neither good nor evil. They are essentially a "force" personified

Water can crush a house or drown a puppy, in this way it can do evil. it can also quench your thirst or help a fish to breathe, in this way we pay our homage to water, water can also float logs to a saw mill, we can redirect it's flow, it can suspend a boat and ease transporation of materials, in this way we harness water.

Daedra are no different, most have many facets. For example Sheogorath is both prince of madness, and prince of creativity, both are facets of the same phenomena, and like water, too much creativity, can overwhelm and turn it into an unhinged mind. It can be worshipped, or fearred, it can used for good or for evil - the only difference is that you can talk to a a daedra and have it answer back, unlike water. Daedra may ask morally evil things of YOu, and that is for you to measure and balance (If the god of water said "break a dam and let my waters flow over that village, it's anathema that they hold me back!) the blood would still be on your hands if you obeyed him.

But the entity itself simply is, it has no "evil" or "good" intentions it's merely a force that does what it does.

Wrong, some of them are clearly doing evil deeds for the sake of being evil.

Medrunes Dragon forces you to kill Silus Vesuius for no good reason.

Hermaeus Mora forces you to kill Septimus Signus for no good reason.

The others atleast have some bit of excuse, not these two, they are just doing it for [censored] and giggles at this point.

Dagon doesn't force you to kill Silus. You can tell Silus to beat it, and then kill the Dremora. I enjoy doing that....

I took some leeway with lore and created a organization like the blades, which I called the Acquisitioners. They were secretly established by Tiber Septim to acquire any dangerous artifacts, deadric or otherwise, and then store them away from the world in a secret vault. Tiber Septim was the only one outside of the organization to know it existed. After centuries the Acquisitioners have slowly begun to die out because of their almost non-existent recruitment, leaving only 9 members left in the time of skyrim. It's the duty of an Acquisitioner to do whatever possible to acquire an artifact even if they must sacrifice something or someone to do so; because if they don't then all of Nirn may be put into danger.

I rped this and it was mighty fun. I played as one of the 9 who was sent to skyrim to acquire the dragon masks before something happened, but I was captured crossing the border. When alduin attacked, I took it as my responsibility to stop him and to capture all of the dragon masks before it was too late because that is the duty of the Acquisitioners. This also justified doing some bad things to make sure the deadric artifacts didn't fall into the wrong hands.

I'm still writing the lore of the Acquisitioners and when I'm done I hope to make some mods to add them into the game.

^ This

Look at it as a temporary necessary evil in order to prevent a possible mass evil from spreading; essentially putting artifacts in the right hands.

Wow, never knew making people not become PALADINS OF SUPER ULTIMATE JUSTICE would cause such a position. Do any of you people complaining about being forced to be evil here ever play a game where there are no good options.

I'd say if you're calling the other 2 demonic possession, it's easy to claim similarly for Namira's. Eola demonstrates on Verulus that she has some kind of "Jedi Mind Trick" sort of think that causes him to obey her commands. She's been talking with you since the beginning of the quest when she insists that you're secretly a cannibal, so maybe she's used that same trick on you!

That said, I would use separate playthroughs for the Oblivion Walker achievement. I said no to almost every Daedric Prince (Did Meridia and Azura) on my Paladin and tried to subvert their plots whenever possible, while my current playthrough is an Assassin who will go for the achievement because he grabs power wherever he can get it.

Nope. Wouldn't be any fun for me. But that's just me.... I don't dictate what others do or don't do. Nor do I snipe at people for their choices and beliefs....

You don't have to complete all of the achievements on one character if it doesn't fit how you think they would act. On the other hand, if you are just trying to complete the achievements and RP be damned, then you don't need an answer to the question.

If you want to know why a 'good' person would do 'evil' things though, I would point to all through human history when people have convinced themselves that doing terrible things was okay because it was 'for the greater good' or some such. Also, Daedra lie. They are masters of manipulation when it comes to mortals. The Aedra too, but they are generally nicer about these things. Some of the Daedra princes take a great deal of joy out of leading a supposedly good person down a dark path, doing progressively more evil things while convincing themselves they are doing good, or the bad things were unavoidable or some other self-deceiving lie so they can sleep at night. Mortals are masters when it comes to justifying what they do.

I don't think there is a way to justify it as a good character. nuetral, sure.

my thief who moonlights as listener with the DB was not evil enough to get them all!

the only thing I can think of is that you are collecting them all to hide them away from mankind and never use them. but then you would have to believe the end justifies the means, and according to my definition of good, that is NOT TRUE. the means make the human.

if you have a view of good that is kind of obtuse "the end justifies the means" might work.

That was only temporary ... Azura says. (You may, of course, choose to disbelieve her.) You were called in to speed up the process which would otherwise have taken a very long time.
Second, that is simply not true. H. Mora's artifact was hidden away and it took considerable effort to retrieve. If nothing else, you kept them safe (or the world safe from them) for a period of time more or less extended.

But theoretically, it could still have returned to Oblivion on its own. It might take a few hundred years, but Daedric Artifacts have a tendency to disappear without warning, and then re-appear to new champions of the daedra.

Ignore the achievement. Achievements adds nothing to the game. You probably mean Namira, not Vaermina.
In Vaermina quest you play the good guy (or the stupid one if you side with the daedra and kill the very useful follower just to get a daedric gizmo)
Daedra are evil. Except Meridia there is no reason for a good characer to do anything for them

daedra arent evil themselves. they are just considered evil.

"Scholars are quick to point out that the characterization of Daedra as "evil" is a gross oversimplification. The daedric races in general don't possess the cognitive awareness required to make decisions of "good" and "evil", any more than a rampaging bear or troll. Even the sentient daedra are not evil in the conventional sense. Rather, they are fundamentally different from mortal races, and their existence is one of chaos, change, and dramatic extremes. Mortal concepts of good and evil cannot be easily applied to them, and to the extent that these concepts do apply, daedra exist at both ends of the spectrum."

I could be wrong, but I believe you can destroy the Skull of Corruption and it still counts towards that achievement.

I don't think so, because the achievement is to actually obtain the artifacts, not complete the quests.

Save, do the horrible deed and get the achievement, then revert to that save. Voila, achievement and no evil action.

My character did the Ebony blade quest if only to keep the Daedra from further corrupting Jarl Balgruuf's son. Her rationale was that it was better that she accept the consequences of what may follow than have a little boy who doesn't know any better come to harm. Same with Molag Bal. She took on that quest thinking it would stop the haunting of that house and keep some other schmuck getting trapped in there. Also, who cares about Boethiah's followers. I didn't find Malacath's quest to be particularly evil. But my mostly good character could not find a rationale to do either Boethiah's or Namira's quest. I just couldn't bring myself to kill that priest of Arkay, so Eola lost her head and I never showed up to dinner. =/

I believe someone mentioned that this was the last daedric quest they needed to obtain the achievement, and they did so despite having the artifact destroyed. However I can't confirm this personally.

That's an excellent point on the Ebony Blade, prevents Mephala from further corrupting the jarl's son and preventing the blade from falling into someone's hands who is evil or will use the blade for evil reasons.

Pretty much my girls' reasoning on that one.... though Nelkir does have some issues, keeping Mephala from making it worse is a good thing IMO.

They're not designed for morally good characters, so you can't justify them.

Sometimes things in life are just evil. Every single thing is not colored with a shade of gray.
