How to keep sane.healthy before 11.11.11

Post » Sat Aug 28, 2010 6:58 am

Since the Skyrim announcement and more importantly the Gameinformer magazine release these forums have been getting rather hectic. Many people here seem to be rather stressed out, seemingly screaming with rage behind the keyboard when another feature from Morrowind has been thrown overboard. I then see these same people rush over to Pete Hines twitter fueled with nerd infused rage that only an angry TES fan can wield, demanding answers for these seemingly terrible decisions these professional game developers have made.

I have made this fine thread to aid the stressed out people on this board, with hopes of producing more rational, calm and intelligent posts. Hopefully this thread can lighten the mood.

STEP 1. Breathe.

Take your hands off the keyboard and mouse. Detach brain from the matrix (realize the internet =/= all). Slowly move eyes away from monitor (do not do this too fast otherwise the sudden change of scenery may cause shock to your system). Stand up, turn off the PC/Laptop and walk to the center of the room. I wan't you to do a few stretches. Turn around and open the window in your bedroom. Step forward (if too sunny outside wait a few moments for your eyes to adjust) and breathe in the crisp, refreshing, natural air.

STEP 2. Hydrate, Hydrate and more Hydration.

No I don't mean drink some Pepsi or Fanta, I mean drink water and lots of it. If you aren't drinking 2-4 liters of water a day you aren't getting the full potential out of your brain. Dehydration leads to stress and stress as we know leads to needless rage on the TES forums. So chaps, get a drinking.

STEP 3. Cut out the sugar folks.

You heard it here first. Sugar while pleasing in the now will come back to bite you an hour later. You may feel happy after eating your kingsized marsbar but the second you start to crash it will only be moments before you are back complaining to Pete Hines twitter. Sugar while not only incredibly bad for your health also raises blood pressure which as we all know leads to stress.

This also goes for coffee. A coffee in the morning ain't too bad but constant cups throughout the day is definitely a nogo, especially on days when a GI update is on the horizon.

STEP 4. Exercise, if only for 15 min a day.

Get out those running shoes and take a stroll around the bloc. Whether its a 7 mile jogging pace or a brisk walk I guarantee the world of Tamriel will look a lot less important by the time you get back. The fresh air will do you good.

STEP 5. Vitamin D - Given to you by the almighty sun gods.

Our skin takes in vitamin D through direct sunlight. Try to get out at least 15 minutes a week during the day to make sure your vitamin D stores are full. Lack of vitamin D leads to depression and we don't want you guys getting down now do we? Timing Step 4 with Step 5 is always a good idea.

STEP 6. A healthy sleeping scheduled.

The human body needs at the least 7-8 hours a day and performs much better with a routine. Personally I'd aim for 9-10 hours of sleep (Yes I know hitting refresh on the GI website is priority but right now sleeping is more important.). Unless you wan't to wake up feeling like a crazed baboon who's child has been whisked away like in that Disney Tarzan film from the 90s I suggest you take my advice and sleep every now and then.

While this is only a basic guide I do feel that many of our fine board members will not only greatly improve their way of living but possibly even add 10 or more years to their life.

If you have found any of the above steps confusing or too difficult PM me and I will gladly help you out.

Sean.

Laughter is the best medicine they say. And this made me giggle a little bit, cause I can think of a few people who need to read it. Thanks for the info!

Good advice and all, but I can't help but feel like it would be better suited to CD.

Well said, Sean! Thanks for bringing a bit of sanity back to these here parts.

The best thing fans can do is...well...do something productive before Skyrim's release. Instead of wasting time and waiting for answers nonstop, live a little and explore the outside world.

The internet has many diversions for the chosen of Slaanesh.

Another great activity for the chosen of Khorne, playing football with the heads of Slaanesh cultists and champions. The chosen of Nurgle also have a few tricks up their sleeve to screw them too. Nothing better than watching an entire cult of Slaanesh receive the gifts of Nurgle and fall en masse. That and take away their partners, just like what good ol' Pappy Nurgle did to Slaanesh with that Eldar goddess of healing. He loved her so much, he rode to the realm of Slaanesh on a chariot of slugs and rot, and swept the goddess off of her feet from Slaanesh. He now keeps her as his girlfriend, bringing her all sorts of wonderful gifts on a daily basis.

Excellent :D

But you forgot step 6 - get a regular sleeping schedule. Don't wait for updates till late in the night, and don't be tired in general. If you are, go to bed, grab a book and start reading something that doesn't have a refreshing rate until you doze away, cozy and with a smile on your face. :)

I condone what this man is saying.

Role-playing is always fun and can lead to sunlight (Step 5), exercise (Step 4) and possibly new friendships and human contact. All which have been scientifically shown to decrease stress.

also, try not to worry. Say your peace and hope it does some good.

Rooibos tea and Ozric Tentacles, or simply repeat the Mantra, 'It's only a game, it's only spellmaking' until sane.

When you say 2-4L of water, I think you should change it to 4L. I find that most people are dehydrated and don't know it. I was, too, until a little while ago when I seriously started trying to stay hydrated.

Exercising is a great tip, too. Do something that's enjoyable and you'll feel more energetic overall.

Vitamin D... take pills if you have to (if you're from Africa or India or some other place when there's more sun throughout the year, you might have to).

Cutting out sugar is a fantastic idea, or at least cutting down on it. Cutting down on junk/fast/processed foods is a good idea overall. Buy some real oats, and eat oatmeal, not that instant crap.

While we're at it, correct your posture: Don't slump down, pull your shoulders back, flex your abdomen a bit, and hold your head up high.

Also, wear clothes that actually fit you. If the shoulder stitching in your shirt is past the natural line in your shoulder, it's too big. If it goes past your zipper, it's too long (unless it has long tails meant for tucking in, in which case, tuck it in). Pants and jeans should be snug and comfortable, not too baggy (stick to straight, slim-straight, or skinny jeans). You may have to buy slim fit clothes if you are a thin person- do this, and do not settle. You'll feel better and more confidant if you dress well, and you'll have something to do while waiting for Skyrim (fixing up your attire).

Get enough sleep every night, for sure. This combined with exercising regularly will keep your energy up, and your mind alert.

I hope this isn't necessary, but make sure you bathe and shave regularly, guys. =/

Dude, this is real life! it has THE BEST GRAPHICS EVER! It even has DX25 from the future! It allows you to feel the warmth of the rays, and how it affects the environment.

But yeah, real life= Best graphics, Worst gameplay

But is real life HD? I heard it isn't at times, and that bothers me.
