How do I kill Deathclaws...

Post » Mon Sep 20, 2010 3:35 pm

Agree on the solo Deathclaw... a group of them is probably too much to handle, Paralyzing Palm and Super Slam can probably cover one of them.

You might try the Teleport Punch, where you enter VATS in mid-enemy leap and somehow end up behind them or to the side by the time the VATS move executes. Haven't tried it on a Deathclaw, their leap is pretty fast, but it works well on Golden Geckos and Nightstalkers.

Paralyzing Palm is most likely your saving grace for Deathclaws, if you don't have the Ballistic Fist. This is just for singles though. For groups, I would say that using both Paralyzing Palm as well as maybe Boxing Gloves / Boxing Tape, if you can survive long enough, just may work as at level 6 or 7, they ran out of fatigue after 4 - 5 punches for me.

Also, there's that neat little Unarmed trick that you learn can really help if you can time it right.

Oh yes I know about the
Spoiler
Ranger Takedown
. How does that fatigue thing work anyways, I haven't played on hardcoe yet so I have no idea. How much fatigue does it drain? Is it dependent on your unarmed skill? How long do they stay knocked out? Do they keep losing fatigue if you punch them while they are unconscious?

P.S. I just remembered a group of ravens is called a murder, that would be really appropriate for a group of Deathclaws. "How did Billy die?" "He ran into a murder of Deathclaws" Bu-dum-tsh

Fatigue works on contact. Once you have "drained" the fatigue of an enemy with enough punches, he/she/it "passes out" for a certain period of time. As for how much, it depends on the type of enemy and, I'm assuming, based on your level. After all, it wouldn't make sense for a level 30 Deathclaw to be dropped in 5 punches right? I can't be sure whether or not its dependent on your Unarmed skill, as damage and fatigue damage may very well be two different things. They stay knocked out for as long as they don't have enough fatigue to stand up. I can't give you much more detail beyond that but I would say at least for 7 - 8 seconds if you don't hit them with more Fatigue damage after they've been dropped. And yes to the last question.

So basically, if you've played Morrowind, the Boxing Gloves, Tape, Cattle Prod *Melee*, and other Fatigue Damage weapons work like that.

Edit: I could be completed wrong with everything I've just said so don't take my word as truth.

Ok, that seems cool, I'll do a little more research on the wiki, I also need to know where Deathclaws spawn most often so I can avoid them till a higher level.

Well I remember in Fallout 3, I usually had Fawkes with me, and let him do most of the work while I either did a lot of acrobatics to dodge, or spam stimpacks while chopping them up with that melee weapon from the pitt (the chainsaw type one).
I would recommend you do the same, unless you happen to be on hardcoe mode. Then you might be just a little bit screwed.

Well, if you don't have a ballistic fist or some other extremely high end punch weapon, I'd suggest either a chainsaw or thermic lance; both of their special attacks are pretty good against Deathclaws when you've got maxed out melee. You'll still need to pop superstims like they're going out of style though. I figure that's your punishment for trying to get close to a ten foot murder machine.

I meant pure unarmed/melee no guns, explosives, energy weapons of any kind. I'm roleplaying that this guy really hates weapons of any kind and likes to get up-close and personal with his enemies, even if it's a Deathclaw.

Well if you put unarmed with sneak you could some serious damage with a sneak attack critical .. even just use a stealth boy :P

Wow, Pushy is freakin' awesome, that guy had 35 melee and that Bighorner just flew. Why is it a melee weapon though? It barely even appears on his fist...

I assume it's not. Uppercut and Cross are listed as specials, which are the unarmed specials.
