How do I kill Deathclaws...

Post » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:51 pm

Title says it all, I've been wanting to create a pure unarmed character but Deathclaws seem way tougher than the ones on Fallout 3 so I don't know how I'll be able to kill them, I haven't been able to kill Deathclaws with any weapons besides trail carbine with scope and the sniper rifle with ap rounds.

I personally use an Anti-Mat rifle with AP or incendiary rounds and get it done in one shot.

To do it with unarmed or melee? Bring a couple companions full of stimpacks and spike knuckle that [censored] for about an hour! Haha. I'm just starting a melee character myself, so I'll be looking for the answer too

It's generally good to have some explosives points for melee or unarmed characters. I know it's not technically melle, but it's closer than an assault rifle

Is the Deathclaw Gauntlet still in this game? If it is has it been nerfed? I remember in Fallout 3 I was literally getting criticals 9/10 times with that thing. What perks do you guys suggest?

1. Get AP rounds on something moderately capable of doing damage at close range, like the cowboy repeater.

2. Get close enough to blow a VATS round on one of their legs, repeat until crippled.

3. Use your power attack lunge to get in, and use the stun time from the blow to get out, maximising your damage while minimising time spent in their kill zone.

4. Repeat step 3 until deathclaw falls over

5. Rinse, select new enemy, repeat

I meant pure unarmed/melee no guns, explosives, energy weapons of any kind. I'm roleplaying that this guy really hates weapons of any kind and likes to get up-close and personal with his enemies, even if it's a Deathclaw.

The thing about DT is Deathclaws completely negate armor. So whatever you wear will be completely useless. At least they did in Fallout 3.

In that case, I'm not sure how good you are with timing/depth perception, but could feasibly joust a Deathclaw to death, provided you block well enough when your lunges fail to stun.

My Juggernaut build is pretty much doing this, except she's rocking a ballistic fist and constantly hopped up on Psycho, so I usually get their attention, get the primary lunge, and beat it to death before the stun wears off.

Addenum: Deathclaws do not negate DT. They just hit really, really, REALLY HARD.

You would only be taking roughly 56 damage per swing every... how ever long their backswing timer is.

You'd still get roughed up pretty bad.

You might have to make your character a Hypocrite or Schizophrenic so they can suspend this hatred for gunpowder to take out the Deathclaws from a distance.

Or, avoid them.

EDIT One thing I want to mention, while it is possible to build a Melee or Unarmed character that can take down a Deathclaw, you never come across single Deathclaws. There always seem to be in Flocks/Herds/Gaggles or whatever you call a group of the things.

I'm sorry but thinking of something as dangerous as a pack of Deathclaws being called a gaggle is just ridiculous to me :homestar: Anyway nobody has given me any solid advice on what I should do yet so I'm going to post this to bump it back to the first page. Is that against the rules?

Is there nothing in Fallout lore that says what a bunch of Deathclaws in a group are called?

And seriously the only thing stopping me from creating an unarmed character are the Deathclaws, how will I kill those S.O.B.'s?

Ballistic Fist and lots of drugs might.

As for me, I prefer using my AMR from long range. If they show up on my compass they're too close.

I call them packs.

Aside from clever pathing usage, obscene outleveling/gearing, and smart timing play (with lots of chems) you're SOL trying to box it out with Deathclaws.

Ok so I guess I won't be able to kill Deathclaws until I max out my unarmed and melee skills and/or get addicted to several chems. Anybody mind telling me where they appear most often so I can at least try to avoid them.

Paralyzing Palm is most likely your saving grace for Deathclaws, if you don't have the Ballistic Fist. This is just for singles though. For groups, I would say that using both Paralyzing Palm as well as maybe Boxing Gloves / Boxing Tape, if you can survive long enough, just may work as at level 6 or 7, they ran out of fatigue after 4 - 5 punches for me.

Also, there's that neat little Unarmed trick that you learn can really help if you can time it right.

Well, most people are running away screaming "OHMYGODNO" instead of debating the plural variations of Deathclaws :D
