Avoid them until you are higher level and have perks or ammo that break through armor better (Armor Piercing Ammo, Shotgun Surgeon with slugs in your gun, Piercing Strike, etc.). They don't have a ton of hit points, but they have crazy armor.

Just avoid them till you are stronger. I find fire weapons work best at killing them.

I would suggest that you don't go past Sloan once you get there......

However, if you stay on the roads in this game, you encounter far fewer enemies, and you can easilly avoid enemies that you do see that are off on the side, usually by just going to the other side of the road. Once you have a better selection of weapons and ammo, then you can go farther off the roads.

Incinerator works great against them, makes killing even Giant Radscorpions easy on low levels. For other weapons aim at the tail, they take headshot damage when you hit them there. AP ammo helps a lot too.

Run.. as fast as you can. You can also pick up the perk called Travel Light (Run %10 faster) at level 4 if you have 45 survival.

I'll second the Incinerator. Hop up on a rock so they can't get to you and bombard them with flaming death. Ironically, other than fire, the easiest way to kill them I've found is to melee. Get the perk that knocks people down on melee hits, get yourself a sledgehammer, and go to town. I completely annihilated the population of rad scorpions (including Giant radscorpions) that live in the southern desert as soon as I got that perk.

I shot a bunch of them near Mojave Outpost to death pretty early on using a 9mm. Not exactly efficient though...

1) You can often buy .223 box ammo in Goodsprings, loading that into a varmint rifle gives you a good chance of defeating their armor.
2) Snipe at distance with .223/varmint while crouched, run away if necessary. Any AP ammo you have should be used if fighting Radscorps.
3) Aim in VATS or real time for the tail/stinger, less armored and you get the best damage results.
4) Once you get Boone, rad scorpions are mere annoyances.

That is so fun! I just started jogging around jumping up and down to attract attention and started batting them out cold with a Super Sledge (Oh! Baby!)

swoosh->swoosh->SPLAT!

By level 4 you should have at least some guns and ammo that can pick them apart. Try to pick them off one at a time and stay hidden if you can. If you get surrounded by 3 at once you'll have a much harder time starting out. Unless you go for the elevated spot with the flame thrower, that works great!

If you're new to Fallout, look for experience EVERYWHERE! Unless you feel your character is built on honest real world morality, you might want to shift that compass a bit and pick some locks, steal things for cash, and hack some computers. Except stealing, the XP will add up like crazy and you can use the stolen loot to outfit your guns and ammo.

good luck!

Sneak Criticals are good for bypassing their armour. Alternatively, AP ammo or running away work.

I think the OP is talking about the 2 or so giant radscorpions that live north of the Yangzee Memorial. At level 4 it's pretty hard to deal with those with the equipment a normal level 4 player wojuld have.

Don't get more than two of them on you at the same time.

Aim for the tail.

Have a high DAM gun, an incinerator or a good melee weapon (bladed gauntlet, super sledge, etc)..

E-DE helps too (his laser is a fire weapon).

If you have room to maneuver, you can kite them for a while and blast away. I was able to successfully shoot down two giant radscorpions with Lucky near Mojave Outpost without taking any hits, by just hopping around various terrain features and shooting.

leave them be and go south. By the time you are done in Primm you should be able to deal with the scorpions to the south. Going north is suicide for low level characters. If the scorpions don't getcha the others will.

I tried to take the small path down from Goodsprings Cemetery and go North, only to run into Cazadores. Those things are impossible to kill with a varmint rifle, IMO...

Cowboy Repeater can take care of the small/normal sized ones just fine and with hand loaded ammo it'll take care of the giant ones.

Late game I'm not above just squishing these things with a Brush Gun.....Just to make them extra dead.

That is a good question since the road to sloan leads to Black Mountain and Deathclaws which are even worse than Gian Radscorpions.

Hehe :) you really think there are just two of them there? Just go and explore bit more ;)

As for question, normal radscorpions are easy to kill. Just "dance" around them always staying on their side or back. Newer put yourself in front of them. I use just any melee weapon for this as they seem to have trouble turning after you. Melee works well also since it prevents them to get too close, each hit seems to throw them back a little. Of course, do not fight more than one at the time.
As for giant radscorpions -they are difficult. Very difficult. I was unable to use same tactics as on normal ones, for some reason they are hard to get to their sides. They are very fast. Early on only working tactics is to get in to place where they can not reach you and shoot. Fortunately their big size makes this easy in some locations. Caravan wrecks are excellent as are some trucks. Some destroyed buildings work also well. Rocks do not work nearly as well since they can reach you on most of them with their stinger.

Preparing minefield in front of you and then luring them inside is also working, especially later when you have some better weapons to finish them off if mines are not sufficient. Cowboy repeater works well for me as it can unload its ammo load very fast. I place row of mines between me and scorpion, then start shooting as fast as I can and hope mines and bullets will finish it before it can reach me. Of course its very important not to get attention of more than one at the time.

In any case, always try to keep as much distance between you and them as you can. Meeting one in close quarters means always trouble unless you play unarmed character and use some knock down moves (which requires VATS if I am not mistaken so if you are playing without VATS as a rule like I do, bad luck).
