How do I know if I have secure rom on my PC

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:35 pm

I was reading the thread about DRM going to far, and thinking my question is not part of the thread, I thought I would make a new one. I do not know much about secure rom but reading it abit, and seeing how it can make games not playable later, (how this works I have no idea), how can I tell if I have secure rom installed in my computer? One of hte reasons why I play consoles, is so I don't have anything installed on my PC that I don't know is installed.

So I would like to know, how I can tell if I have securerom installed on my PC? If I do have it, how do I unisntall it? I only have Morrowind and a few games from Impulse installed on my PC right now, so I don't think I need secure rom installed. If I do have, should I leave it on? I just hate things being installed on my PC that I didn't want it installed or notified that it is being installed on.

Well you can see if your computer has any traces of SecuROM by opening regedit and then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/

If there is a folder named SecuROM in there your computer has been in contact with that piece of software.

if your computer is spewing smoke, randomly showering sparks and/or talking to you in via microsoft sam. then you definitely have securom or possibly TAGES.

But...but...THAT'S UNPOSSIBLE! They said so:
Chris Priestly, Bioware's Gstaff

Recently there has been some concern over the DRM (Digital Rights Management) included with Dragon Age 2. Hopefully this post will help clarify what the DRM is for all versions of Dragon Age 2.

Steam versions use Steam DRM, no other DRM is added.

Non-Steam versions (digital or retail disc) are as follows:
- No disc check, you do not need the disc in drive to play.
- No limit on the total number of PCs you can install and play the game on.
- There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can start/play the game within a time window [5 PCs in 24hrs].
- Each install requires logging in to your EA account to verify game ownership and if you are a member of these forums, you have an EA account.
- You can play offline but the game will require a login check after a select period of days.

Release Control (does not use securom)
. It does not install anything to the PC.
. Sole purpose is to check with a server to validate whether the game release date has passed or not.
. It completely removes itself after the game release date has passed.
. You will not be able to play until that date has passed.
. Dates & times are set to the retail street date per country.

They wouldn't lie to us, would they?

Dragon Age 2 doesn't use the same SecuROM DRM that Spore had, the DA2 securom thingie is a lot less intrusive and only does a single check when you launch the game.

It's unfortunately not that easy to get rid of, one of the reasons people are so unhappy to hear that word. You can try googling for some scanners, or you can go to SecuROM's website, which has a removal tool. The tool can't and doesn't remove everything, as it informs you. You don't have to finish running the program to the removal stage, but when you run it it first gives you a list of what it found on your computer, which should give you a decent idea of if you have it, and from what. Using the tool to try and remove SecuROM is done at your own risk, because of the way it embeds itself. At the very least, any installed games that use it are probably going to stop working, and if any include the limited-activations form of DRM, you are likely to lose one.

Indeed, there's a difference between SecuROM and SecuROM. There are a lot of different flavors of SecuROM, and not all of them are "bad".

From what I just read, that SecurRom for DA2 just checks to make sure the release date has passed. Then it's supposed to self-destruct. They said it leaves some "inert" crap behind, but were planning on coming out with a clean-up type of tool.

I don't have Dragon Age 2. I just read what they said. They said it's not Securom. Then what is it's name? It's either it is or its not. If it is some kind of "flavour" as someone mentioned, then it is still securom. Just like are you a little bit pregnant? Either it is or not. It can be a one time thing, but it is still securom.

Thanks to all who answered my question.

Point is, there is the version of SecuRom that writes unremovable entries to registry, like in Spore and Mass Effect, and then there is SecuROM verions that don't do such things, like the DA2 date checker or Fallout 3 disc checker.

Some versions may cause issues, other versions do not.

 I had an encounter with TAGES from Silverfall. Dumb thing made the game minimize every 20 to 30 minutes to check for its disc. And of course it didn't uninstall itself when I uninstalled the game and just instead tied up system resources looking for the game that was no longer there. Fix was kind of easy: download the correct TAGES drivers, install, then install again in order to prompt an uninstall thingy. Yippee. :brokencomputer:

What entries? I have first Mass Effect and it doesn't even need the disc to play.
