How long have you been gaming online?

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 2:40 am

Good times, good times... Played this for 5 years. :D
I only played UO for around 2 years (due to things like http://www.imanewbie.com/imatoons/ima01.shtml happening a lot) to my character.

Link is to ImaNewbie UO comic. Hilarious stuff. :)

I have been playing MMORPGs ever since the 5th grade in elementary school. I started out with Runescape, tried WoW and Guild Wars, but I like F2P MMOs the most. The Communities seem to be a lot more friendly in those. I am currently playing Pangya, Perfect World, S4 League, and LaTale.

First game I ever played online was Star Wars: Republic Commando back in 2005. I mostly play on my 360, but I've been playing a LOT of Killzone lately.

Great comic series, I remember it well - and so true. Not even http://media.arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/gaming-evolution.media/ultimaonline-1997.jpg was immune to all the griefing. :lmao:

The first thing that ever happened to me in the game was that I got mugged and my starting gear was stolen. Now that was a freeform MMORPG! Modern MMOs just feel like amusemant parks in comparison. I stopped playing UO when they split the world between PVP and non-PVP, actually - just wasn't the same afterward: the PVP servers were like warzones, and the safe servers were too docile. For me, the danger and chaos of the original Sosaria was integral to the game.

I was part of a community that built a frontier town in the wilderness, called http://deepwater.lemming.org/. Still one of the most satisfying gaming experience I've ever been part of: we had our own guards (who constantly had to deal with PKs and griefers), we made our own RPG quests and storylines, held festivals, traded goods, and one night we even entertained the king for a royal visit. Marvellous game. :D

UO had a lot of promise, I admit, but unfortunately the constant griefing and PKing that went on (while I was playing) has turned me off to most MMORPGs in general - though it doesn't help that actually finding people who want to roleplay is like searching for a needle in a haystack that's on fire. :P

I started in 2007 with Resistance on PS3, however, I don't really play many games online. Mostly because I svck at online games and I get much more entertainment out of single player RPG's. :fallout:

I think the first game I've played fully online was WoW, which was in 2008 I think. So about 3 years I guess.

Very true. I was actually about to give up on the game but for the appearance of the Europa shard, which became an almost immediate haven for European (and even some American) RPers. Even then we had our share of griefers to deal with, but it was at least a far cry from the d00d-speak crowds of other servers.

Given the choice between a freeform "wild west" online world where almost anything goes, or the static playgrounds of most other MMOs, I know which I prefer... :P

That was one of the first that I spent a lot of time on. It was a hard transition from Half Life Deathmatch to Tiberian Sun, but once I made it, it was great. With all the love for RA2, I think people forget how good Tiberian Sun was.

About 9 years on and off I suppose. I started playing online in 2000 with Diablo II, moved on to a few MMOs like Star Wars Galaxies and Final Fantasy XI. The only other game that I've ever played online was Call of Duty 2, which I quit a few months after it came out. I quit SWG in 2005 when they rolled out yet another overhaul, effectively murdering the community, and Final Fantasy XI in early 2009.

Haven't really played anything online since and really don't care to. Gave both Left 4 Dead games a try and didn't like 'em. I might give Diablo III's online a shot, depending on how the game itself turns out.

Diablo 2 was one what I really played a lot online.

That was the first Command and Conquer game that I bought. In 1999 I was svcked into Age of Empires II and all the campaigns it had. :P

First game I ever played online was GRAW. So what... that was like 2005?

Only games I've ever really played seriously online were COD. Especially the first MW. Played the hell out of that game.

Now, I mostly just play Warband online. Good times. :foodndrink:

Since 2003? I think?

However, I rarely play online. I've not played an online game since the end of October. Before that... maybe once in July, then not for like a year before that.

Started in grade 5 (2003) with Runescape and then followed up that addiction half a year later with Frozen Throne.

Ah, a fellow Starsiege: Tribes player and Worms 2. Nice. :)

I started playing online back in 1997, with Ultima Online.

:celebration:

Nice game, Ultima Online :)

In 1999, I got into Worms: Armageddon, Unreal Tournament, and Everquest.

I started in 1996 with Diablo 1. Back then I was the immature 9 years old stealing items players would be trading then disconnecting from the server. Or getting in a game with the modded Staff of Apocalypse and kill any players I'd see, steal their stuff then leave. Good times. :D
I then moved on with Starcraft when it got released, though I svcked online. After that I played mostly Allied Assault or Operation Flashpoint (Especially with the excellent RTS mod).

Today, the only online game I play is either Minecraft or Left 4 Dead.

9+ years here, can't recall exactly how long though. I know it started with PC games, but not sure if it was internet based games or games I bought from walmart/EB. And, I use both Xbox 360 and PC, switching between the two every so often.

MUDs in the mid 90s.. that's when I got my start in games you could play online. So roughly 15-16 years.

C&C, Doom, Rise of the Triads, Starcraft, C&C, Quake, and Diablo were all part of the same decade, but by "online" I also include games that were played via LAN/VPN.

Ahh I forgot about MUDs. A friend and I were playing in one. I can't remember the name, but I recall that the common mob to kill in the city you started in were dogs called "Fido". I think they'd leave their tails as items if you killed them...
There a lot of guilds created by the players... I had a good time in there.

As for another multiplayer moment...when I was in High School in my Computer classes, I'd bring my Duke Nukem 3D cd and install it on most computers. During class, we'd launch a LAN deathmatch. The teacher didn't care if we worked or not, as long as we'd submit our projects on time. We also played Starcraft sometimes. :D

I've been on a broadband connection for 15 years, and I have yet to really play any game online. I've played some for a few hours like Warcraft 2, Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2, NWN, Jedi Outcast, FFXI, Guild Wars and L4D, but it never took long until I stopped.

I'm more of a single player kind of guy :P

Despite playing computer games since the late 70s I only started playing online in late 2007 on my PS3 after COD4 came out.

I've been on Neopets for about 8 years. With regard to 'real' games, I only started playing online on L4D about a year ago. I'm just not really good enough to play with other actual people.
