How long have you been gaming online?

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 1:55 am

I started out with Quake 2, Jedi Knight and Red Alert online around 1998. My first MMORPG was Nexus in 1999.

Looking at the online gaming climate today, specifically Xbox Live, Starcraft 2's Battle.net 2, the removal of dedicated server support from some games etc, it all feels like a rather strange regression. I was hoping XBL would help bring online gaming on consoles closer to the PC experience over time, but it now seems that developers/publishers would rather bring down the PC to console standards instead.

Started with Unreal Tournament in 1999. I had dial up so it was barely playable.

Then I had access to broadband connection and played Diablo II, UT, UT 2004, several other FPS's and WoW. Good times.

Wow, really showing my age here but back in 1995 or 1996 with Hexen and Duke Nukem 3D. It was only 1-on-1 via dial-up modem but it still counts, dammit. :)

I wanted to play NHL '96 like this, but it was too expensive. :(

Roughly 6 years come this summer. Guild Wars is my first online experience and I still play that. Now I've added PSN and Xbox Live to that list, the latter being a year and some months, the former some months only.

5-6 years (might be 7, but I'll go conservative). I started with Counter Strike: Source once I got a powerful enough PC in high school. My friend got me into it. I almost always play online with my PC. My Xbox comes into play with GTA and racing games.

Oh, nevermind. I just remembered. If we're going to go to the very beginning, it was about 8-9 years ago with StarCraft over a dial-up connection.

Diablo1 when I was .... a little younger than I am now. :P
Before that we played Doom over networks but that wasn't online...was never into MUD's or browser games.

I've been playing online for around 8 months now. I never really planned on playing online in the first place because I like single player games more, but over the summer I bought Halo 3 and played through the campaign and got all of the single player achievements. Then I found out that there were 1100 more gamer points to be found in the online mode, so I got a LIVE account and I've been playing online ever since. Halo 3, Reach, and ODST, Black Ops, CoD4, Gears 2; I'm happy I started playing online because I was really missing out on some cool stuff.

I'm a youngen when it comes to online gaming. I just used to play single player games like RPG's and I actually joined these forums before I played online because I loved Morrowind. I'm at about 3 years of online gaming.
