How long should the Main Quest be?

Post » Thu Jul 22, 2010 6:29 am

Though the Main Quest has never really been the emphasis in Elder Scrolls games, I thought the Oblivion main quest was a bit short. How long do you think the Main Quest should be, in terms of hours? Give your opinions on how many quests or what kind of missions there should be.

I didn't vote 'cause I honestly have no sense of how many hours the other main quests have taken, although I do remember feeling that the Morrowind main quest was longer and had more "hidden knowledge" (in lack of better term, what word am I looking for?) about everything that would reveal itself as you got along. Oblivion seemed shorter, except for the endless gate closing tasks, which got tedious in the long run, and was fairly predictable in my opinion.

I'm just hoping for epic battles for the Main Quest, something Oblivion lacked.

Long, very long, and becoming more and more epic as you get closer to the end. ^^

An hour long.

Just kidding. I would want it to be 25-30 hours long.

I think the main quest should become randomly generated when you've done about 20 quests of it, so that it lasts forever.

That's easy, 30+ hours. The more content the better. I can't really compare to tes 3 and 4 because I didn't do the main quests there, but I'm working on it on morrowind :woot:

I say around 29-30. I don't want it rediculously long or short. Most of the best quests are the small ones or faction ones. If they change that in this one though i go for 30+

Would you rather have them focusing more on the Main Quest or Side Quests?

Daggerfall length. Nice and non linear, but with no individual task being particularly time consuming (as was the case with the Hortator quests in Morrowind).

As far as actual length is concerned, probably DF/MW's. From the player's point of view, Arena's. :P

Seriously, has anybody on this forum actually played it to completion?

The main appeal to me of TES games in the past has been that you don't need to do the MQ at all if you don't want to, so my main concern is that there should be plenty to do outside of the major storyline and that I don't feel funnelled into it or rushing to complete it. Of course the MQ should be long and involved, but the stuff to do outside of the MQ should be far bigger than the MQ itself. Otherwise an open world game could seem pretty empty, and you might as well have an RPG set in chapters if the MQ is the be all and end all.

I voted 30+ hours, as I wouldn't mind a very long main quest. Too be honest though, as long as the main quest is unique, engaging, and epic, I will be happy with it. Too give an example, I loved the Dark Brotherhood quest-line in Oblivion. It wasn't very long; I actually felt it was short, but it was definitely engaging. It did leave you hangin' though... I prefer for that not to happen.

30+ hours, when rushing/dedicating myself only to the main quest.

As long as possible without padding it with tedious repetitive tasks (see Allies for Bruma).

I hope the main quest includes quests like the dark brotherhood in oblivion. Those were amazing!

Daggerfall length. Nice and non linear, but with no individual task being particularly time consuming (as was the case with the Hortator quests in Morrowind).

Fulfilling the prophecies in Morrowind became tiresome. It became hard to keep going after you lost sight of your overall goal.

Edit: How did I even spell Morrowind wrong... The I and A are nowhere near each other.

I'd like to be able to complete it fairly quickly so i can go back to playing Morrowind or Daggerfall.

I'd say 0-10 hours, but that is just because I don't really care for the main quests in the games. As long as we can get lengthy side quests, and guild quests that's fine with me.

10-20 well written exciting hours.

Plus many hours of side quests.

I dunno if I want a 30 hour main quest... that probably would mean other questlines and factions would suffer as a result, and that would be uncool. :sadvaultboy:

I think that Bethesda will put more time into the side quests than into the Main quest, as that was the case with oblivion and morrowind.
