So how's it lookin for Mounted combat

Post » Fri May 20, 2011 7:31 pm

So i think i remember hearing in the kinda recent podcast interview with Todd Howard that they wouldn't include horses unless they make them more fun to play with. He said in oblivion they were boring and it felt like "riding in a jeep" (maybe not an exact quote but he said something like it). I take it that one of the things that made horses bad in oblivion was the absence of mounted combat, so i hope that now that we saw a horse in the video, mounted combat is included.

I would guess that Bethesda would include mounted combat in Skyrim. I believe Oblivion was supposed to have it, but it never surfaced in the final game.

Truthfully, I doubt it would be that intuitive, though. Probably like combat on the ground. We can always hope, but I'm not holding my breath.

Mr. Howard was completely right about horses in Oblivion. They were overall awkward to use and not easy to control. If horse mounts come back, the system will have to be completely overhauled. If the new mount system is better to the point BGS would want to add mounted combat, then sure.

As long as I'm not forced to do it, I don't care. Force me to do mounted combat and I'll just cheat my way around the problem.

don't care if it is in or not, I just want to know if you will be able to even have a mount, mounted combat would just be a bonus.

Ummm... you missed the most obvious poll option. "Horses being in has no affect on if there will or will not be mounted combat."

They just told us a few days ago, that mounted combat is still undecided, and they are working on making it right. I really doubt they have decided by now. They of course have the horses finished, so why not put it in the trailer, but we should be prepared to NOT get mounted combat.

Well there's a horse in the trailer. I think that means that you'll be able to ride it.

I think your confusing my topic with the poll question. reread my poll and see that the question doesn't say anything about horses, so your option wouldn't make sense.

Pay close attention to the windmill part. You can't miss it.

It would be such a tease to include non-rideble horses... not saying it couldn't happen but jeeze, thatd be mean.

Huh? No, I was referring to mounted combat, not being definite just because there is a horse in the video. One of you other options even says "Definitely be included. If horses are in, then mounted combat is in." How is that any different from what I said?

I'm saying I don't think that the horse being in the trailer is an indication that it WILL be included. Todd already said he wanted it to be in, but it won't be if its not right. I'm sure they're still working on it, and if they can't get it right... well we're not getting it. Doesn't mean I don't want it, I'm just saying, don't get your expectations set just yet.

Well I'm sure we all saw the horse near...Solitude??...and since it is saddled, it's a good sign that they will be mountable, but I don't know...I have this suspicion that mounted combat will be a no go. I hope I'm wrong because I would love to see it get in there, but I just have my doubts. Still, I would settle for more fluid mounts and dismounts, as well as improved horse mechanics and more fluid movement.

my other option was "Definitely be included. If horses are in, then mounted combat is in." but the answers are self-contained. what you said wouldn't make sense with the question cause the question doesn't mention anything about the fact that horses are in having any effect on mounted combat.

Ok, my mistake. I'll rephrase it, just for you! "Still no way of knowing, even if there is a horse in the trailer." :P

Besides, what I am really asking for is a "I really would like it, but don't think it'll be in(or at least not yet)" which isn't covered by any of your options except other.

I'm pretty sure the lack of mounted combat was intentional in Oblivion, it certainly sounded that way when it's exclusion was explained. Mounted combat is tricky to implement unless it's a core feature, otherwise it potentially very unbalancing. The speed bonus alone would make mounted combat against unmounted foes quite easy.

It was a bit odd in TES IV to be able to ride a horse and not attack but I'd prefer that to an awkward or unbalanced system - although if the devs feel they can implement this well I'd love to see it. I'll be happy if it's in or out as long as it isn't done poorly.

1. don't really care, it would be nice to have the option but it isn't a make or break for me.

2. other. the terrain is just not suited for mounted combat any ways. consider how bandit archers dodged around when fighting them in OB, imagine trying to hit them on a mountain cliff on your horse, thats just begging to fall to your death.

EDIT: @frank the bunny, best avitar ever. love that movie.
