Make higher-grade armor.

The more valuable the armor= the more points that it puts into smithing.

best bet would be to find the transmute tome which turns iron ore into gold ore and continue making jewelery.

Still probably the quickest way as iron ore can be bought everywhere for cheap. If you have lots of cash you can buy higher grade materials and make armor and weapons but that can be expensive. Smithing now levels based on the value of the item so making gold jewelery from iron ore is you best cost vs level increase method.

Dwemer is fast, plus you get a lot of soul gems in the process and any rewards are a bonus (sword, ancient knowledge, elder scroll, etc)

Glass armor is fast too, and there are quite a few malacite ore deposits along the mountain sides, but you really have to know where they are and mark them on your irl map.

Steel plate, glass, and/or ebony will get you the rest of the way fast.
Truth be told, I rarely bother with Smithing training beyond L30. Once I have Dwarven, I can use that to reach L50, and Advanced to get to 70. And Glass gets me to 100.

If you don't mind using an exploit:
Use the restoration potion loop to make some overpowered smithing gear.
Then make some armor and improve it.
Improving the new armor with your overpowered smithing gear will level you up in a moment.
Downside - your new gear will be really, really overpowered and may ruin your fun.

Upgrade all loot you find. If you have Dawnguard you may also forge large amount of different arrows - cut some wood and use all ingots you have and all which you are able to buy for them.

I just create loads of high level armour over and over again, which makes me wonder, why on earth did Bethesda increase the difficulty of levelling smithing when it was hard enough already just to compensate for all the players who cheat and resort to doing exploits?

This would make sense to me if it was an MMO or some sort of online game, but since it's not...

The only thing that will take much time is leveling Alteration far enough to allow you to cast the spell. Iron ore is incredibly easy to gather in large amounts. The spell tome is a static item, found in 3 separate locations, so it isn't like you would have to wait for it in random loot... The following website lists exactly where to go to find the tome. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Transmute_Mineral_Ore, for those of you who don't want to bother hunting for it...

Also, consider reinvesting some of the gold you make from crafting rings/necklaces into gems, especially diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies. Making the various gemmed versions of any future rings and necklaces greatly enhances their value, making smithing level much quicker. Assuming you can cast the transmute spell, you could probably gather sufficient iron ore to complete those last 10 levels in about an hour or so of exploring...

Smithing was too easy to level before. Now it makes sense. I would gain 10 levels just from clearing out my haul of raw materials making small cheap items. This could level my character before I was ready to handle the new enemies.

Thing is, those who exploit the game will still do so.

90% sure the loop doesn't work anymore...I tried it once after 1.6 on a game that I was already maxed on level in(I thought it would be funny to have my follower decked out in uber gear, going around and one-hitting everything) and I couldn't get the fortify restoration bonus above +30%.

Reward of that quest is nice but unfortunately I did it with a character who had smithing skill 100 already and uses only light armor so the reward was quite useless for me.
