How to make textures thread

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:11 pm

Is there any advantage of using Crazybump instead of the NVidia filter? Or do they both have their strong and their weak points? I always use the NVidia plugin, so this made me curious about what other people think...

Another nice feature of CB is that considers the whole range of the image, so with a bit of tweaking, it is much more forgiving in respects to the input. This also makes it easier to create a normal map from a photograph, without each and every shift in color causing havoc, making it also more 'newbie friendly'

For me, the strongest feature is the ease at which you can mix several normal maps together for a final composition. (ex: baked highpoly normal map + painted surface details)

Question, when in game you can see the individual faces of your custom mesh as though it were a checkerboard, but not all squares of course, is this a mesh or texture problem..? Am I solving this in blender or in gimp?

Thanks,
Khugan

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that, can you post a screenshot?

This is truely hideous, but here's a pic...

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii181/Khugan/faces.jpg

When I look closely at the mesh in game, I can see the texture repeated over each face in miniature. Quite strange. This is the second mesh to come out this way. The other meshes I have done are normal. When I compare their settings in blender I can find no difference between the normal ones and these messed up ones.

Looks like you need to run the Smooth Normals spell in Nifskope (possibly face normals as well ) and then run the remove duplicate vertices spell as well (right click on the Nitristrip - go to Mesh - face normals then repeat using smooth Normals ) this happens many times when exporting from a 3d program and running these spells will usually fix it up !!

I did smooth normas in nifscope, but didn't do update tangent space... I will give that a try. Thanks much.

I forgot that with it being a skinned mesh it will probably throw up a warning when you try to run the update tangent space but you can try it anyway (just make a backup first in case it does mess something up) - also run the remove duplicate vertices as running the smooth normals will many times create extra duplicate vertices.

Khugan this is about something else. But you may want to list what oblivions nifs can do and what textures types it uses.
Marcel and Nocturnal most likely don't have the time to play oblivion. :coolvaultboy:

Wow!!! I missed this thread somehow. Lots of links!!!

I'll go through these links and cherry-pick the best ones to place on the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Resources_for_3D_Modeling#Textures_Resources page.

Thanks,

Just a note: Apparently CrazyBumb is beta until February 20th. I'm guessing that all beta installations will deactivate then, and Ryan Clark will make the full version available for download for a fee.

I'll buy it.

Thanks AstionM
He needs beta testing. It's at 8.2 so it's getting there but feed back will help him.
I think it will be 24.95 for the pro and non pro will be free but I can't remember.

Yes but it has been a Beta for quite awhile now and each time the expiration comes up he normally has a newer version by then with an extended expiration - but eventually it will become a full release but even then he has said the price for the non-pro version will be reasonable ad for what it does it will be worth it !

Here's a few select posts from him on the Forum so you do not have to search for it :

Hi Rick,

CrazyBump will be sold commercially.

The release date and pricing are still undetermined. A few features remain to be finished before CrazyBump reaches version 1.0. Probably the biggest of these is automation; I think automation is an important feature for a professional tool to have.

The Beta test will keep going until the commercial release is ready.

thanks,

-Ryan

Hi!

The commercial release will come in two flavors:

There will be a Professional version and a non-commercial version. Price points aren't set in stone yet, but the non-commercial version will be inexpensive.

cheers,

-Ryan

I don't really like feature-limited demos, because they give people a bad impression of the software. The artificial restrictions make a program look worse than it really is.

I think a fully-featured time-limited demo is a better idea, because it gives people an accurate impression of what the software really does.

At least, that's been my own experience; I usually just get frustrated with crippleware and uninstall it.

cheers,

-Ryan

I believe you got an answer at morrowind. check with nifskope forum. It's a bit tricky to learn and it would help you a lot to learn over there.

Perhaps upload the files (Nif and textures) and put a link up and then someone could take a look at them - it is much easier to say what the problem is if you can actually see the files.

Is it a rigged mesh like an armor or just a static or weapon that is not skinned ? - if the later an easy way to add a texture would be to load it in Nifskope change it to a Nitrishape (Nifskope will not export .objs from a Nitristrip so you need to right click on the itristrip and select triangulate to change it to a NiTrishape) - then go to file - export - .obj . Once you export it load a similar object (or any object really) and also convert oe of its Nitristrips to a NiTrishape - click on the Nitrishape to highlight and then go to File - import - .obj. it will tell you that a Nitrishape has been seected and will be replaced - import the .obj object you saved earlier and it will be added into the scene as a NiTrishape with the material of the one you jus replaced. (you now have your model with a texture applied just delete the rest of the old model or use a Block - copy branch, Block Paste branch to get it back into the old nif to replace the one without a texture.
