How to make the game look good

If I didn't know better, I would have guessed it was Fallout or something

The point of the after picutre isn't about "IT MUST LOOK LIKE THAT". I simply wanted to point out that the game looks washed out more than it has to be. I just randomly covered the image with a layer of transparent blue.


Not to me it doesn't - not that it doesn't have its problems but undersaturation isn't one of them.
The second pic looks far worse.

Is this thread a joke? That doesn't look better, that looks unrealistic. This is Skyrim, not the jungles of Africa. It looks dark and gloomy because of the overcast and the fact that it's rugged and realistic.

Vanilla (1st one) is much better. It's a beginner's mistake, kind of, to think that high saturation and contrast make things look better.
I thought so myself when I first played Oblivion with maxed out shaders.
Then my brother, who is an aritst, came and told me: GAWD that looks awful! I realized the huge mistake I made.

I'm very confused. Isn't what looks better... what looks better? If it looked better to you, then it looked better to you.

Color is the product of light. How we perceive color depends upon the source of light and how the material or object reacts to that source of light. It also depends on how the eye and brain receive and translate those wavelengths of color. Despite being a virtual world generated on a computer, the light system works, or tries to work in pretty much the same way. It appears to be pretty cloudy, and that in and of itself will cause the light to be diffused and the wavelengths of color will be equally scattered. So once they do hit the surface of an object, the effect will be pretty dull in terms of saturation. Now if it was a cloudless day, with direct sunlight, with the objects reacting with the light just right, it would be pretty saturated, but realistically it's going to vary greatly being the product of so many variables. Not including the settings applied to your Monitor. I'm sure a lot of us are veiwing those images a little differently, because we may have our monitors set up a bit differently. My monitor has like six different settings for interpreting the information of color I'm receiving.

Do you believe the second to be a better version of the first?
If that's the case it appears to be a lonely spot.

No. The first is more realistic in my opinion. But people are going to think differently.

Yes they are. But i'm sure there's a colorimetric model out there to objectively evaluate these things.
