How to make your 360 gamepad work on PC Morrowind

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:13 pm

Holy crap, is that true about the right stick? Or is it just a problem Grendel is having?

Anyway, I just finished setting this all up, clicked "Return" on Morrowind's menu, picked up my 360 controller, and nothing happened.

So I re-did everything and, still, nothing happens. Woo hoo.

The post above mine mentions it as well. Sadly, I think this topic/subject is dead. There is no way to change the controls for looking/aiming:(, IF you change the X: axis to MOVE, the left stick WILL move you and turn you, but it won't/can't aim for you:(

Like I said in another topic, make a profile for Morrowind in Control MK, http://redcl0ud.com. Or I might make one, I dunno.

What does that do?

Looks like it's supposed to do the same thing as JoyToKey.

[EDIT]
Wow. Nevermind everything I've posted in this thread so far. I just rebooted my computer and now everything works!? That's very weird, the controller driver didn't say I had to reboot when it installed... but oh well, this is awesome! Thanks very much fallen for sharing this! :^)

Grendel, everything works. I'm using the Blocking Enhanced configuration that was posted by fallen, maybe you could try that or a different controller mapping... I dunno.

Oh and fallen, I'm going to go post a similar thread to this at the Planet Elder Scrolls forum, I'm sure some of them will love it! And I'll be sure to tell them the awesome person who gave me the information, thanks again! :^)

Well done. I love it when people are able to solve their own problems. :) Especially since I'm clueless about controllers. You might want to PM fallen as he doesn't come by very often. You may not have noticed that this is a thread resurrected from last winter.

Edit: I just realized how that might sound. I don't mean to PM him for permission, but to let you know he may never see your thanks otherwise.

Thanks, he is PMd. :^) And the thread is already posted at PES. :^)

I'm just loving playing Morrowind with this controller! Everything just feels so much smoother now, especially sneaking. WOO HOO!

Going back to the Control MK question, it emulates the mouse and keyboard. I got it to work perfectly, no mouse or anything. But, this seems to be working for you now, so doesn't matter anymore. :D

I'll try to tell you exactly how I did it Grendel... I hope it helps.

First, I got the Xbox 360 controller pad driver from the windows update page - you'll have to do a "custom" update and select the driver from the "optional hardware updates" section. And you might want to reboot your computer after this.

Then open JoyToKey, click the "file" drop-down menu and select "create new configuration file" and name it "Morrowind" or something that you will recognize. Now look in the folder you installed JoyToKey, there will be a file called "Morrowind", open it with notepad and paste the text to it from one of fallen's configurations, then save the file.

Open JoyToKey again and double-click "Morrowind" to make it your active config file, then boot up Morrowind and follow fallen's advice for mapping the controls (reverting to default controls, enabling joystick, etc).

If you try the default config and it doesn't work, then download the 'Blocking Enhanced' mod (you will need 'Morrowind Enhanced' if you don't already have it) and try using that config with the block button set to the right mouse button in ME.

How is it using the controller for Morrowind? Do you use the 'A' button to select topics in conversation, etc?

Also, are the menus a bother? From memory, they are resizable windows, not cycle menus, like on Xbox.

I prefer the controller to the keyboard simply because character movement (and particularly sneaking) flows so well with the controller.

The menus are the downside because, like you pointed out, they're not like Xbox menus. You have to use the right trigger to interact with them and sometimes it's a bit of a pain to get your mouse where you want it... but on the whole it's okay.

Oh by the way, is there any way to turn on large text in Morrowind? I think that may make clicking through menus easier. I seem to remember a large text option somewhere in the Morrowind.ini, but I don't know exactly what it does. I'll go check and reply to myself if nobody beats me to me. ;^)

@ Grendel, I'm glad you got it working! :^)

Ah, yeah. I thought that using the right trigger might be necessary. I have to do the same with Oblivion.

This is from http://yacoby.silgrad.com/MW/Tuts/IniTut/Initut.htm.

[Fonts]
Font 0=magic_cards_regular
Font 1=century_gothic_font_regular<-------------------------------these fonts can be changed to large for hi rez setting

It doesn't make much of a difference though...only about a half a dozen pixels.

Ya, I found those entries when I checked the ini file and I remember I read somewhere that you could change the "regular" to "large" and that would enlarge the fonts. Unfortunately, that only gave me an error when I tried to start the game. :^(

So how do you enlarge the fonts?

Thanx to your BETTER explanation :) . Seriously, you should post that method( about the .cfg ) over at your topic on PE! It would help us stupid people :) .

You're welcome Grendel and I just posted that over at PES. You can see the thread http://www.forumplanet.com/planetelderscrolls/topic.asp?fid=4870&tid=1983961 if you ever want to for any reason.

I'm trying to use google to find out how to enable large text in Morrowind, but unfortunately any search involving the words "Morrowind," "large," and "text" turns up just about everything there is on the internet even remotely about Morrowind. :^P

Never tried it myself, but I just checked the MW font folder and there's no font in there with "large" in the name. There is a century_gothic_big though. Maybe that's what should be used.

This is just so this thread doesn't fall into the forum waste bin. The instructions by fallen are very handy to have around.

I tried the instructions given but it did not work.

One of the parts of the instructions that I was unsure of (based on the wording I assume you don't have to do anything at that particular point) was were it was stated "You need to have your prefered config selected for the trigger buttons and right stick to work". Exactly what do you have to do here?

Hopefully someone can explain the directions in more detail since I get the strong impression that the directions are very vague and the writer of them assumes that we will automatically know some of the things to do without it being stated. I followed the directions exactly but as I said, they didn't work.
