How many different afterlives are there?

Post » Tue Aug 27, 2013 11:08 am

So i was wondering, the nords have Sovngarde as their version of a 'heaven' if you like, if you meet the requirements you end up there.

It is my understanding that mortals in TES, either end up in a daedric realm for eternity (depending on their actions and beliefs in life), the Soul Cairn if they get soul trapped, or the dreamsleeve if their soul has no allegiance- and their soul is cleansed of any personality and reinstated back into the mortal world once more.

My understanding of this is likely not perfect, so feel free to point out any holes in what I'm saying.

Like other mortals, nords also follow the above rules, but they have an extra option. So my question is, are there any other culture/race specific afterlives akin to Sovngarde? Theoretically, should there be one for every race? If not, why. What makes the nords (+ any other races that have their own unique afterlife) special?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I wonder what the believers in the "evil" daedric princes think of the afterlife. I mean, no matter how wicked someone is, eternal pain and suffering as a denizen of some cruel daedric realm in Oblivion hardly seems like something interesting.

I'd imagine they'd regret going there! Spending eternity getting thwacked by dremora in the Deadlands doesn't seem too desirable. I'd imagine they wouldn't know their fate in life however.

For one, most people plain don't understand the value of a soul. Or can't see beyond the short-term advantages of following a Deadric Prince. Or falsely believe that svcking up to Dagon will allow them to do nasty stuff to others in the afterlife instead of being the one subjected to said nasty stuff. Anyone who sells their soul to a Daedric Prince is an idiot, especially to the "evil" ones.

Regarding other afterlifes, we've got a lot of different accounts of what happens to souls after death. Dunmer believe that their ancestors stick around, helping their clan and generally influencing the living world. The Psijic Order seems to hold similar beliefs according to "http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Old_Ways"

People of Cyrodiil seem to believe of Aetherius as some kind of paradise. Moth priests would tell that the soul lives on as an ancestor moth, though.

Personally I say that souls either go to their aligned spirits or back to Aetherius, where they dilute into the pure magic of the place. What the spirits do with their souls is up to them. The daedra would play with them until they're bored and then stuff their essence into their realm. The Aedra, I believe I read somewhere, would use the creatia to fortify their place as a spoke of the wheel. That's with the curious exception of Lorkhan aka Shor, who hasn't been home in Sovngarde since convention and therefore his aligned souls are having an eternal party there.

Yes, someone with extreme masochistic tendencies may actually like his fate in afterlife.

Not all Daedra are "evil" in a sense; the planes of Azura, Clavicus Vile, Meridia, Sheogorath, Nocturnal, and Hircine seem pleasant, at least on the surface where you have the twilit and blinding beauty of Moonshadow, or the Shivering Isles which is essentially an asylum and sanctuary for the insane. Hircine's realm is an obvious exception, but it's probably the only place in Nirn where a werecreature can give into its nature without being killed for it. These Daedra also seem the most "caring" Princes to their followers where they get to live with them forever out of (generally) a sense of free will, sans Clavicus of course but his realm is known for being pleasant; It really depends on who you're following and why.

Beyond the Daedric Realms you do have places like Sovngade for Nords where they can feast and fight forever, to Soul Cairn which is basically limbo. Then there's the Dreamsleeve, the process of Reincarnation where the souls are recycled for new bodies.
