So, how many of us have a PS3?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 1:03 pm

Yeah, but they are called YLOD instead :P Much less common than RROD, though, and generally only happens with the original 60GB launch model and to some extent the 40GB model. The newer Slim models doesn't suffer from YLOD. But then again, the slim 360 doesn't really suffer from RROD either.

So... how long do you assume that the slim PS3 of a gamer who games during most of his/her free time could last?

Very long time. The original PS3 slim consume about 100W (the current slim about 80W), and 100W is about what the original PS2 consume, and I never heard of the PS2 having any kind of overheating issues like YLOD. The PS2 had optical disc drive issues though, so I guess that might happen :P

By current, you mean 160 gb models, such as perhaps one I bought brand new last October? My first PS3 ("fat" 40gb) got that YLOD and I'm literally worrying about using the new one for more than a couple hours at a time or for using it much at all until Skyrim comes out.

Right, because they removed it. Now you just get a "There is a problem" indicator, no more RRoD. That's the way to fix it for good! Just hide it. <_<

I am proud to say I own one of the original ones, which I believe is 50 gb, and one of the newer ones, not sure of the gbs.

Oh come on, the slim is noticeably more energy efficient and thus generate less heat so overheating issues shouldn't occur anymore :P

Sort of hard for the 360 Slim to RRoD now. Actually it's imposible for it to happen because the 360 Slim doesn't have a Red Ring for it to happen. :D.

I like my old PS3. It's nice and hefty. As someone said, they don't feel comfortable with the new PS3 Slim because if someone breaks into your house, you can't club them over the head with it, with the old PS3 you can LOL. :P.

Yeah, the 160GB and 320GB models.

You seem knowledgable about these things. Do you know why, when a PS3 is advertised as having 40 gbs or 160 gbs, it only really allows 34 or 149 to be used for saving data?

So that is the explanation. Thanks for posting.

Just wondering, how many people out there, know they can change the size of thier Hard Drive. All they have to do is take the one out they have now, and put a bigger one in. How simple this is, I don't know, but that is what I have read on the forums. So if you want a bigger HD, don't buy a newer system with a bigger HD, just buy a new one and replace the one you have to do. What else needs to be done, I am not sure, but I guess you can always "google" it.

I just discovered something the PS3 does the 360 does not. Admittedly it's not a major thing, but damn it's convenient! My TV has Anynet+ a CEC feature. (Samsung's implementation of (CEC) Consumer Electronics Control.) When I turn on the PS3, my TV switches to the HDMI port with the PS3. When I turn it off, it goes back to TV, though not my HD receiver. (Going to see if I can find a way to default to the first HDMI port, being the HD box, rather than the coaxial cable (SD) signal. Though I have yet to find it if it exists.)

The reason it works for the PS3 and not the 360 is PS3 uses 1.3 HDMI compliance ports where the 360 only does up to 1.2. CEC is 1.3+ only.

The 360, especially the newly released Slim should have had 1.3 but nope, they used 1.2.

Anyway, just thought I'd add my newly found cool feature to the PS3 discussion.

Also, I'm loving the God of War Collection. (GoW and GoW2 up-converted for the PS3 on one disk. Exclusives being the reason I got the PS3/360.) I just started 2 last night after beating 1, having never played them on the PS2. I started another run through of Uncharted 2 as well seeing I never finished it before. Borrowing my friends PS3 was a PITA as the kids (and dad) would want to play, every day, and the game was rented so I just never got to finish it. Now I own both a PS3 and Uncharted 2 so I can play at my leisure. I still have to finish Assassins Creed, though I may just start over rather than move my saves from their PS3 to mine. I need a refresher on the game anyway seeing it's been awhile since I played last.

I have one, but I don't get the chance to play games very often anymore. I've been playing some New Vegas on it when I get the chance though.

Mine does that, too. It's pretty convenient to just hit the PS button on my controller and not have to do anything else. A small thing, but nice.

The older PS3 models don't do it either, only the slim models.

I hadn't realized that. Thus making my stance the 360 Slim should have done it to even stronger. I mean, they went as far as: Sleeker design; 17 percent smaller; much quieter operation; better cooling; touch-sensitive power and disc tray; 250GB hard drive; built-in Wi-Fi; five USB ports; dedicated Kinect port; onboard optical digital audio.....yet no 1.3 HDMI??? Ok.

Oh well, maybe the next one.

It really is a neat feature I've come to like about the PS3.

I'm a little more peeved about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLQxV13kF3s they didn't fix in the slim, rather than HDMI version...
