How many horses can I...

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:52 pm

fit in my mouth?
Lol, weird joke.

ANYWAY, what I actually want to ask is how many horses can I own at the same time?
For instance, if I were to buy a horse from every stable and never have one die would I then be able to just change horses whenever I liked without paying? I like the idea of having a mount in every hold capital. I'd pretend to lend them to folk I like so they could get enough riding and affection.

Seriously though, I can't get a straight answer via search engines and Yahoo answers (the monstrosity that is Yahoo Answers).

I never tried? But I would assume it's handled like the dogs where you can only have one at a time. There is a way to have two dogs at one time but it's a spoiler so I wont tell. But this is my best guess. ( I don't like usen horses, they tend to get in the way of combat.)

On one of the wiki pages it says 'multiple'. I don't know how reliable it is though.

I once owned two horses at the same time. It didn't seem to cause any problems. There are certain dungeons in the game where your horse appears autmaticly outside it when you exit the cave, as if you had fast travelled there even when you walked. It seemed to pick the horse I had ridden most recently. You might want to keep a save before you start buying multiple horses just in case you run into some scripting problems farther down the line.

I have owned the Whiterun horse, Frost (he doesn't count) Shadowmere (counts as owned) and the Markarth Horse (speckly grey one) I would often find them all stabled everywhere I go. That is a total of 4 and in my stats it said I owned 3.

Hope that helps!

Blah. I won't bother. The Windhelm horse doesn't appear to have a name so there isn't really anything special about it. I know Queen Alfsigr's name doesn't appear on her but you get told what she's called by the stable owner so I'm fond of her.

Ah ha! Wonderful!
Okay, forget what I said; I'll keep the save in which I bought the Windhelm horse and I'll call her Brandy. :3

i'm on the 360 and if you use fast travel then the horses disappear except the current one.

does anybody know if you can buy another horse from the same guy after they've died?

i know you can't buy it immediately, but, i'm wondering if a certain amount of in-game days need to go by.

from the game. i just retested it to make sure and i had 3 horses. my current one, #1, (the last one i mounted) traveled with me. i fast traveled back to the stable where i left my horse #2 and it was gone and replaced with the current one, #1.

i traveled to horse #3 and it, too, was gone. #1 followed me.

Did you buy the horses at the stables you left them at?
Someone elsewhere said you can have two, one travelling with you and one on stand-by. It makes sense so I'm wondering.

i had horse #1 from whiterun in windhelm. i bought the windhelm horse and fast traveled to riften. my whiterun horse came with me (i didn't hop on windhelm). i bought the riften horse and mounted him. fast traveled back to windhelm. the riften horse came with. windhelm/whiterun horses were gone. fast traveled back to riften and the riften horse was with me. and the other 2 were not there.

edit: just traveled back to whiterun and had 2 of my owned horses.

i think what happens is that the horses begin to walk back to their home stable when you mount a different one.
i had my riften horse in whiterun, traveled to riften and a generic horse was there for me to mount (he fast traveled back to whiterun.)
traveled back to whiterun then back to riften and the riften horse was back in the riften stable. lol.

So I'm even getting mixed answers here. Flippin' burgers.

osheao: Well, I don't think they'd wait in Riften. They'd be at their own stables when you were on the Riften horse after fast-travelling. Did you check that?

It's possible there is a difference in platforms: On the pc you can most definitely own multiple horse. I just loaded up a game, ran to Markarth, bought a horse, rode back to Whiterun, dismounted walked over to my other horse and rode him out of the stables. Two horses, standing side by side, both named my horse. Under general stats it show's horses owned = 2. Perhaps on Xbox and /or PS3 you can only own one due to memory constraints?

I don't know much about this sort of thing but would it take up that much memory? All that would have to happen is that you'd not pay at the stable. I'm tired so I may not be making sense.

You might be right though. I guess I best just leave it to be safe. I love my Allie.

Why not test it on your own system? Make a save. Hop on your horse and fast travel to another hold and buy a horse? You should then have two standing side by side. You can always reload your save if one horse disappears. Stable masters do restock when a horse dies, sometimes you have to wait a while. So you can always buy a horse who looks just like Allie, sounds just like Allie, acts just like Allie and is named "Dragonborn's Horse" just like Allie.

I'm entirely lazy unfortunately. Shhh! Don't tell!
I will check it eventually.

You are also right, of course, that I could just get a new one from Whiterun if she vanishes. I don't like having excessive amounts of gold anyway. That may be odd.
