So how many maps do you think will be in game?

Post » Fri May 14, 2010 3:19 pm

As long as there is variety its all good :P

The biggest problem with games like brink (Borderlands, Global Agenda etc etc) is it gets boring / repetitive after 3-4 weeks and everyone quits (And the fact that alot of companies dont care about PC users / Oceanic players) But by the looks of it PC gets dedicated servers :D [censored] YEAHHHHHHHHHHH

Hopefully there's NO BETA / DEMO for this game, cause thats one thing that ruined Global Agenda very quick, you pretty much played 1/2 the game in the open beta....

Wedgwood said that Reactor is a bonus level, unlocked after you beat the Resistance campaign, so it initially will not make up the number of maps available. It is based off of a "what if" scenario, and has nothing to do with the main story.

That's new to me, but i like it. This basically means that they encourage you to play both sides.

I think there will be over 9000 different maps, I just had to say it.

But no.. Let's see -

- Airport (Security Map)
- ? (Security Map)
- ? (Security Map)
- Container City (Resistance Map)
- Shipyard (Resistance Map)
- ? (Resistance Map)

x Reactor (Bonus Resistance Map)
x ? (Bonus Security Map)

I can see it as 6 maps + 2 bonus maps, making it 8 in total, and that's what I think, perhaps 4 per faction, making it 10? Who knows?

What the ...? Faction-based maps? I understand that you guys try to put them into a faction-based scheme, but I don't think this will actually work. Both campaigns will most likely work out in a way that the story makes one faction play the defender's role in one map and the attacker's role in another.

The biggest problem with games like brink (Borderlands, Global Agenda etc etc) is it gets boring / repetitive after 3-4 weeks

On the one hand BRINK is not like Borderlands or Global Agenda; on the other, BRINK will also get repetitive after 3-4 weeks.

Then it all comes down to how good the game is after 3-4 weeks, yeah?

Faction-based maps, nono, what I meant with (security map) and (resistance map) was that they're in that factions territory, not that only they get to play it, or am I making a missunderstanding of you missunderstanding me?

Now I'm confused :l

I think I get what you mean now. But most maps don't have one distinctive "faction look", except for container city and the founder's tower, maybe. Airport for example blends over from the very clean and intact look into the wasted and dirty one.

Well if each game averages about 30 mins to 45 mins(you have to remember the multiplayer is the singlelayer) the singleplayer experiance has to last a certain amount of time otherwise it will be considered very lacking. Since most FPS games now adays have roughly a 8 hour singleplayer at 30 mins each mission you can expect about 16 missions lasting around 30 mins each if things are pretty evenly matched.

I doubt maps will last that long, even if you played the max amount of time. I would guess maps will be 30 mins max, and average 15-20/25. Using other singleplayer FPS games, isn't an accurate comparison, since the singleplayer in Brink plays the same as the multiplayer.

Container city starts with 8 minutes, adding another 6 for blowing up the wall. Maps will last for an average of 15-20 minutes.

Afaik Container City has 4 stages (the first is blowing up the gate, the second is escorting the robot, the third is using the crane to carry it over the barricades and I don't know the fourth, tbh), perhaps even more. The first and second stage were set to take about 15min, the whole game could easily last two or three times as long, depending on how the teams were balanced.

4th is bringing the medicine (resistance) or weapon (security) to the helicopter.

I put the factions between brackets because they think that the container contains a medicine (Resistance) or a weapon (Security)
And the last part is bringing the weapon (as security) to the chopper, while as resistance you have to prevent this (As resistance you think they are stealing a medicine).
I think they showed the chopper at the PAX video or one of the Dev diaries.

Yes they are one in the same, and since its still that people would complain that the "singleplayer" Is too short if it lasts under 8 hours. I was trying to make a guess based on that. Yes the missions will have more of a replayability due to them being made to work as multiplayer as well but it still has to be long enough to fulfill a singleplayer experiance.

2 things have already been mentioned by the devs:

1. Playing through both campaigns should take around 10 hours
2. Brink is designed as sort of a "gateway drug" to MP gaming.

With this in mind, you cannot use a "not long enough for singleplayer" mindset, since it is not designed around traditional singleplayer mechanics. Even the singleplayer is designed to have a high replay value, so that players will want to play it again and again, so the campaigns really don't need to be that long, since no matter how you play it, it's all the same.

Typically, for the vast majority of players, this is how it will play out:

Buy Brink
Play both story campaigns, just to find out the story (and get achievements)
Play nothing but MP, co-op matches, or solo bot matches.
