How many mods can Morrowind handle at a given time?

Okey, so I'm a Mod-Junkie. I got a start-up error message "too many selected files to compile" after adding a few more mods today. Can I correct this problem by merging mods, like they suggested in a few Russian forums I found looking up this problem? How do I merge mods anyway?

The limit is roughly 256, but you can get a huge number in if you selectively combine. Take the simplest ones first and merge them. Make sure to back everything you touch up, and test thoroughly.
