I'll honestly never get that. Unless its just gawdawful. Its a fun game mechanic that is better done imo than the mod equivalent and adds to my roleplay. Hardly anything that functions well and adds to the game for that cheap is "too much".

HF adds more content than just the houses, it also adds new characters, builds on the followers and constructing the house is a quest in itself. I found it a nice development and diversion from adventuring. Obviously if you don't want it, don't buy it. It offers a lot for the price, though. I use the HF houses and haven't found a mod player base that I liked better.
I don't see a single feature in Hearthfire that is worth the price tag.
When I was on X360, I had only DG and DB.
When I reached ascension and became part of the GloriousPCMasterRace, I bought the Legendary Edition.
HF is good for console players who don't have access to mods and want to RP. It becomes rather obsolete on PC because of the house mods on the Nexus, but it still has redeeming features. Fully voiced NPCs, random encounters, new recipes and ingredients, etc.
I have all 3 due to the Legendary Edition but I only have Dragonborn and Dawnguard installed. Hearthfire is too buggy and I don't need extra problems.
So 25 people have the base game on PC, but 26 bought Dawnguard? Makes sense.
I have all three, I don't regret buying them. Now if only I could get rid of the completely free patch 1.9...
I love it for the throwback effect. It was one thing that I missed from Morrowind (as it was skipped in Oblivion). I was giddy as a schoolboy when HF was announced.
It was a completely useless DLC that made horses even weaker. They also removed, for some reason, Shadowmeres immortality.
That was more or less just to get a response from Eddie. Still, it was only $2. And it did in fact double the HP of your horse.
It was the first DLC and was more of a test run, really. People expected a little more form the first one. The jokes started pouring out and the populous jumped on the bandwagon. Most without ever even downloading it at all. This resulted in a lot of people slamming it and not knowing why. It got a bad rap and tag that stuck.
?Still, hardly something to be compared to Hearthfire.
EDIT :
When I say "first DLC", I don't just mean the first for Oblivion. I mean it was the first DLC for Beth that was available to a platform other than the PC. Morrowind had a list of extra content as well as the two main expansion packs. none of which was available to Xbox, as XBL wasn't up and running.
Horse Armor was the first that Beth had in relation to XBL. The downloadable service was young and unproven. This small, and I mean small, addition was created very fast and it was just something to get out.
Xbox 360, and I've got them all.
Seriously, I have never thought so little about whether or not to get all of the DLCs - it was just a no-brainer for me, completely regardless of price.
I love each one of them, and can only barely imagine Skyrim without them now.
I bought all of them on the last big Steam sale but I don't have any of them active. I tried Dawnguard but didn't like it and haven't tried the other two.
Dawnguard adds garbage I don't want. I'll never buy it.
Like what? Vampire attacks are the only problem I can think of.
Yes, and I don't appreciate the changes made to the vampires. I'm not paying for that.
While i do agree, wholeheartedly, I implement mods to correct each one of those issues. I'm not sure if you are on a console platform, but the red lip line and the removal of the Stage 4 AoS are the two real issues I had with it. Even then, it's not enough for me to deprive my character of the extra content.
Being a vampire was rather weak and shallow before anyway. New locations, characters, quests and stories, crafting arrows, dragonbone weapons....worth it imo.
Got each DLC the day they were released on xbox. Money well spent and no regrets about any of them, shame there wasn't more.
I own the base game and all DLC on both PS3 and PC.
PC, all DLC.
I no longer remember what is from the base game and what's not. Of course, I have the same trouble with mods sometimes, some I play with so consistently I forget they weren't always there. I don't always build HF houses, but even when I use house mods they have HF content. I do love that oven. I also like that my personal HF carriage drivers will take me to even the tiny towns. Can't get that kind of service from Bjorlam.
Dawnguard & Dragonborn, PC.
I don't need it. My characters are weirdos that prefer having a barrow/temple/fort/cave to themselves, populated with nefarious servants. Miraak's Temple & Kolbjorn barrow being my favorites.
If I do desire a "home" I can download a mod for it that suits my tastes.
