How Many Settlements...

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 11:29 pm

I am just curious as to how many settlements people maintain... I only have one... Sanctuary... which I have spent quite a lot of time getting it the way I like... (see sig below if interested) I am struggling to gather raw material... mainly because of my refusal to scrap Sanctuary... I am thinking of creating an outpost at the Red Rocket and Slightly developing Abernathy Farm... I am yet to discover all the locations and guessing only halfway though the MQ... It'll also be kind of cool if you could post pics of your settlements as I'm always interested to see what other people have done...

Too many. I feel like a slum lord at times. I have so many supply lines runing to the castle there is always a brahmin jam at the entrance and I had to start using Sanctuary as a secondary supply line base. I dont know the exact number but its alot to maintain. I hoard everything except cheap weapons and armor (scrap them though) I'll take everything I can its nice having the full perk of strength that allows fast travel while overloaded.

Off topic question but how do you attract brahmin to your settlement... I built a brahmin bathtub but none have shown up thus far...

I don't really know. I think its based on the number of settlers there. I just set up the Lighthouse as my home and allowed only 4 settlers in (needed some servants) and there is a brahmin there also.

I have 18 at Sanctuary with eight charisma so I have a max population... Do brahmin count towards the settlement population...

Brahmin do not count towards pop. There is no magic to attracting them - but two consistencies over many campaigns:

-brahmin arrive over time regardless if brahmin feeder setup, but i find placing one down accelerates it

-you get 1-2 brahmin usually and they auto deposit fertilizer into workbench

If there is a settlement population factor i havent seen it. Small new settlement gets 1 brahmin,my mega 32-40 pop settlements have 2 brahmin. Seems like 2 is about all you should expect.

Not that I know of. One thing I noticed is all my settlements have one except the construction site, there are 4 of them there. So who knows, with the amount of bugs that happen with these games seems anything goes.

I have been offered a brahmin for sale as a random encounter. Just a scavenger, alone, with one lonely Brahmin. Asks me if I want to buy it, and then I can send it to one of my settlements like a companion. Thats the only way I've ever gotten a Brahmin. I don't remember the cost, but I'm guessing like 50 caps.

Just have the supply line go to the nearest settlement, you don't have to have one central hub.

I operate all the settlements.

I don't have Bunker Hill (possibly yet)

I stripped Boston Airport of all its resources and carried them to another settlement leaving the airport unconnected (for reasons...)

Yeah, figured they had to go where I stored all the junk to be able to use it. So I just left it like that, it is kind of funny though seeing this pile up and pack brahmin running all over.

I didn't go with a charisma / local leader build and still on character 1. For places that have no/little food capacity, what are the options? Does the supply train share the food / water production between settlements?

There is ALWAYS enough food growing capacity in every settlement.

You sometimes need to get creative about placing your plants, maybe relying on Mutfruit (it produces the most Food/Plant) rather than other things. For instance, in Hangmans' Ally I had to demolish all of the pre-existing structures to make the settlement self sufficient, constructing a single multi-level bunk house to free up space for a small Mutfruit farm, several water pumps (I like a minimum of 30 water/settlement so it's DONE and I never need to think about it again) and a couple of Brahmin Troughs (they're going to show up anyway, so I might as well make sure they stay where I want them to stay).

Have all the settlements but Bunker Hill and Airport(due to not advancing MQ), most with 26 settlers(all dressed and geared according to task), and all specialized in one way or another. Taffington and Oberland are my supply hubs, all supply lines originate from them.

You can do that?!?! Spoiler!?!?! I kid. No I have not gone over there yet, good to know could be nice. Getting tired of the faces and voices over in Sanctuary. There's one lady that's rude all the time and even Trashcan Carla seems to not want to leave.

No mods, although I am on the PC version. Some of the stuff is not removable, you are right, but enough is that you can open up a clear spot for a Mutfruit farm. Mostly the area towards the back.

As you can see, nothing fancy, but I've got enough defence, beds, food, and water for everyone and even a couple of Brahmin wandering around. It's not pretty, but it works.

Supply train shares food and water between settlements; my Slog produces loads of food but not much water whereas my Kingsport Lighthouse produces an excess of water (it has two industrial water purifiers) but not much food, I have them connected so neither has a supply problem

With an un-modded FO4 I had all the settlements possible except one in my first play through. It got to be too much to handle with all the radiant quest and settlement attack spam. I didn't have time to play the rest of the game at all.

I am on my fourth character and this time I am sticking to a limited amount of settlements I will be actively supporting even with a few mods to disable the radiant quest and settlement attacks. I am going to concentrate on Sanctuary as my main settlement. Red Rocket will be my base with just me and my companions, no settlers at all. Might move my base over to the Drive in once I unlock the perks to build crafting stations. I will add Greygarden but I will not build a settlement beacon. That place is fine as is with the bots running things. And finally the Castle with a beacon going so they can feed themselves. The only other might be the Slog so I have some where to send the Ghoul settlers, that might show up, to. The whole walking corpse look just gives me the creeps.

The rest are going to get helped out via their quests until I unlock the quest to get the Castle. Once that happens they are on their own. I will probably just salvage what I can at each and move the materials to my main base for my various building projects I have in mind.

I have a mod that makes it so artillery can fire across the whole map so there is no reason for me to try and support around 30 settlements just to have the option to build artillery in each one to cover the places that were out of range of the Castle.

The Brahman thing is odd. Most of my settlements end up with one or two. A few don't ever get any. I had one that had like eight or nine in one play through. It was funny watching them all fight over who got to the one bathtub I had placed for them.

I currently have only Red Rocket. Even made sure not to use any of the Sanctuary's workbenches, since it automatically activates the workshop. I have no settler, no food production, but I've bought 1 dog and 2 brahmins, so I've also built a brahmin's bathtub thing, and a water pump because it made more sense.

Isn't it quiet fun that Sturges and the others are sleeping on the floor, have only one melon and a gourd to eat IIRC, and drink dirty water directly from the river, because they're so busy hammering the walls here and there all day?

I've unlocked every possible settlement in the game aside from Bunker Hill and Spectacle Island. I haven't progressed far enough in the main quest line to get Bunker Hill yet, and I haven't taken the time to go to Spectacle Island yet. Aside from these two though, I have them all established and I at least marginally maintain them. My main settlements are Sanctuary, Starlight Drive-In and The Castle, so these are the three I focus on the most. I haven't built the others up to the extent that I've built these three, but they all at least have 20+ food, 20+ water, a couple of solid structures with 20+ beds, a scavenging station, and at least 60 defense.

Are these all the possible settlement locations? Sweet map if it is.

Yes, those are all the possible settlements. My supply line looks fairly similar to that one.

If you want your own interactive game map to use as something of a location checklist, this is a great one. You can use the column on the left to show/hide only specific types of locations and click on the in-map bubble to 'mark as found' as you progress through the game. I've found this to be very useful.
