How is Morrowind GOTY on Steam for mods?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:59 pm

As far as I know steam modifies the exe files as you cannot launch a game without steam running.

I believe you can use MGE and the code patch if you use the retail patched v1.6.1820 exe (latest). But you will have a CD check... so that doesn't help.

The other way around it is to use a modified executable that bypasses the CD check. But we can't talk about that.

The main disadvantage is that steam won't keep track of how much time you've spent in game if you use another executable.

If MGE does work with steam, please post, the 75% off deal ends in 5 hours.

Alright, time to lay the rumors and conjecture to rest.

The Steam version of MW is recognized by MCP and fully patchable by that tool - MCP v1.6 or better is recommended tho.

MGE works fine with the Steam version of MW after making two simple adjustments:
* steam's 'Enable Steam Community In-Game' setting must be disabled in order for MGE to run in-game.
* the bsa files need to be redated in order to properly use distantland (this needs to be done even without MGE in order to get bookart/icon/mesh/texture replacers to work).

MWSE works fine with the Steam version - either MGE's built-in version or a stand alone version.

FPS Optimizer works fine along with the Steam version, even while running with MGE and/or MWSE.

The Steam version will always start up Steam and take the user thru the Morrowind Launcher first regardless of running directly from Morrowind.exe or running MW from the Steam menu - as long as the Steam version is installed properly, 3rd party apps will still work correctly despite this.

Adding plugins is accomplished by installing them to the '...\SteamApps\common\morrowind' folder (subfolder structure below that is the same as non-digital MW installs). That's also where you'll find the exe and ini.

And thanks showler for giving the heads-up about Steam offering MW GOTY for $4.99! That was the price point I was waiting for, and afforded my ability to confirm this first-hand.

Just tested patching with both MCP v1.6 and EXE Optimizer v1.8, and happy to say that works as well. B)

As usual, you'll need to apply all the desired MCP patches before patching with EXE Optimizer.

Just tested it as well. Changed the file date, disabled the overlay and both MCP and MGE with distant land work. Too bad you cannot disable the overlay for only specific games. Maybe now that I bought the game I'll finally play it.

sofar i have had steam oblivion and morrowind for a month ... saved a ton of time not having to spin up a disk or worry about leaving the disk in the computer .. odd thing with the morrowind MGE ... seems as i push up the settings ... my fps is going up , not down ... very stable .. just a few tricks to loading mods to the steam game file .. but realy no big deal ...

in the past i would just dump a mod into the game .. now i spend a little time, look the mod over .. make sure it is all loading in the order it should

down side to steam, seems i have a conflict with internet explorer + morrowind ... that is if i alt tab out of game ... pull up the internet ... fail to close explorer .. and pull up morrowind ... explorer closes in the back ground after about 15min ... causing the game to lock up ... good chance i have a simple computer conflict problim and not a game problim ...

steam toone atm cl69 ... stonghold completed and thieves guild done running the armor legging mod for the cat with mge, tex and lip sync mods .. set mge landscape to high

if you read the post on all the things that can go wrong when you buy the disk ... best thing one can do is buy the 4.99 steam morrowind .. i now owen 4 copys of morrowind and can safely store the game disks

Actually, you can.

In your games library, right-click Morrowind and select "Properties". There's a game-specific check box in the dialog that appears.

Just to let everyone know, I am running the Steam version and have the Code Patch and MWSE working. I also got MGE working and am now using MGE XE without problems. Two things to note: for most mods to work, you must change the dates on Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon .ESM's and .BSA's from 2010 to 2002. I accomplished this with a program called Attribute Changer. Second thing: for MGE to work, you must disable the Steam overlay for Morrowind, which means none of the features it has or even counting time played.

EDIT: just realized how redundant my post was. Oh well, I'll leave it here anyway.
