How is Morrowind GOTY on Steam for mods?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:00 pm

...my old GOTY discs away to my brother.

Plus, no disc in the drive requirement.

But how is it for mods and super mods like MGE?

If you planning to buy Morrowind GOTY from Steam, don't do it because the TES CS is not included with the Steam version. It's much better to buy it in the local store or online such eBay instead.

And it has trouble with getting some of the 3rd party program mods - like MGE and the codepatch - to run smoothly. Or so I've heard, maybe that has changed? =/

Counter argument being that I bought thirteen good/excellent games in the past week for under a hundred dollars.

It's possible Valve may go insane and shut down Steam without releasing the games from their online checks, but I'm not that worried about it.

I already own the GOTY on disc, but my brother doesn't and doesn't have an internet connection. I could easily keep the CS disc while giving him the game discs.

If they have a problem with MGE and the code patch, though, that's a different matter altogether.

The disc check in Morrowind is a real pain.

Trust me, it could be worse. I once got a game whose DRM was so effed up, it minimized the game every 30 minutes. Stupid Atari and their stupid TAGES drm.

So, yeah, it could be worse. At least it doesn't phone home to the internet, or make you register your product key on a DRM service site or other crap like that. Heck, you don't even have to go through the CD key game if you need to uninstall and reinstall, nor play around with 'activations.' It takes, what, a few seconds to pop in the disc? Takes longer to boot up Steam (if you don't have it auto-start when you boot up your PC).

But, yes, unless there have been changes, I think things were last left off with there being troubles with getting MGE and the codepatch to work on the Steam version, since the .exe is altered for the Steam DRM.

No, I agree with you there. I'm not complaining about it being there. Disc check doesn't bother me but in Morrowind my drive spins up like crazy during the game unlike the usual disc check in most games. I actually had to flash the firmware on my drive to even install the game which is odd since it's an old drive that I never had any issues with.

Huh. Does anyone know if there are files on the disc that don't get installed that the game needs? I haven't installed MW in a long time, does it have various installation options? I know in some games the "minimum" installation option means that you still need the disc for sounds and videos.

I'm to old fashioned to be really a help on that decision...I hate it to download a game...[censored]..it svcks...I wanna have a cover, a box, a paper booklet...a DVD/CD-R...I just guess it is not much cheaper to download it than to buy it in a store...and Morrowind IS worth $4.99 and more, cause in some parts it is better than TESIV: Oblivion

As far as technically, the Steam copy has had reported difficulties and extra steps as far as mods go, so you'll be in for a little more work. MWSE and MGE originally weren't compatible (and they blamed us, when it's actually their crappy virus-ridden launcher), but some people have said they got that working. I don't know exactly how that works, though.
You might be able to play everything, but it takes more work.
The Steam copy also doesn't have the CS, so there's little point to getting it, just for that. Unless of course you have a hard copy, then install the CS from there (but you might as well use a disc image at that point).

Trust me, it could be worse. I once got a game whose DRM was so effed up, it minimized the game every 30 minutes. Stupid Atari and their stupid TAGES drm.

God, don't even mention Tages. The only thing worse is Steam... Those two are such pains.

I love manuals, too! I love the box art, I love manuals (especially the well-thought out ones that are like little pieces of art), and I love any extra stuff - maps, booklets, you name it. Manuals that come on the disc that I have to read on the computer screen... they just aren't the same. I like the Morrowind GOTY manual, it's got everything you need to know. My GOTY didn't come with a map, though. :(

Gamestop doesn't sell used computer games. I can't think of any stores that do, 'cause there's no way to know 100% if the person selling the game really did uninstall it. =/ Nevermind that the uninstaller usually leaves behind the product keys in the registry.

@showler: do you have any games you don't want? You could try using http://www.switchgames.com/ to swap an unloved game for a Morrowind Goty.

Off topic posts have gone away, this thread is about downloading from Steam to use mods with it, not about pre-owned games.

Discussion of how to avoid the disc check is not acceptable and amounts to piracy discussion.

The Oblivion Script Extender guys worked with Steam to make OBSE compatible with Steam's Oblivion downloads. I had wondered if there was a similar exchange here. Apparently not.

In that case, there is enough of a detriment for me to avoid giving my discs to my brother. If he wants Morrowind, he'll just have to find his own copy.

I had a bunch of old games, but I gave them all to my brother just before Christmas. Most of them had issues with Windows 7 anyway.

edit: Rohugh laid it out before I could warn people off of the improper discussions, so I edited out my own comments on the matter.

Yeah, I started doing stuff like that back when I bought the 4 cd version of Planescape:Torment and Baldur's Gate waaay back. Really annoying to have to pop in a different disc if you accidentally stepped over a "boundary' that leads to a new area, only to have to turn around, step over the boundary again, reinstall previous disk, and continue on. Got pretty annoying, but they were still two of the best games ever. Got around that by copying the disks to my harddrive and writing a small script to direct the game to them instead of the disk. Of course, that was also after I had to buy a second copy of Baldur's Gate because overuse/disk changing had scratched it beyond repair. So I guess that would be one up for Steam. However, if Steam limits the use of certain mods or outside programs, especially ones you might use like MGE, then why not spend the extra $5 at Half Price Books or something. I saw MW GOTY there the other day for $9.99.

You got the DvD version, then. I have the CD version: a disc for MW, a CS disc, a TB disc, and a BM disc. I only need the MW disc to play.

There was, for the code patch and MWSE. As far as MGE went, Steam blamed it not working on the developers and ignored the issue. However, it works perfectly, except when you use their launcher.

Anymore, you can go to any store with old games and grab a copy. I saw it the other day at EB Games for $10 or $15 (they sell quite a few used games, I think you get $10 to trade your game in). Walmart occasionally has copies (usually GoTY) for $15 or so, Gamestop, any other store has a chance of having one on the shelf.

The actual boxed GoTY copy in the triple-wide box with metallic writing and whatnot has a quad disc case, with MW, Trib, BM, and the CS each on their own disc.

My exprience of Steam is this. I've both Morrowind GOTY and Empire Total War on the same PC. The difference between these two is that, Empire Total War was released on Steam to prevent any piracy copy in the future.

? I just got an extra big box and the discs were in paper sleeves. The box looks like http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-Morrowind-Game-Year-Pc/dp/B0000CNUUP/ref=sr_1_1/176-4695585-9677219?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1262459847&sr=8-1.

From what I've heard there are some problems with MGE if you launch Morrowind through Steam (I think it's the Steam overlay which allows you to chat in game and such that causes glitches) but if you launch it without Steam it should work the same as with a non steam version. I think the installing is the same.

Good news, then, for those who purchase the Steam version. :) But, will the codepatch still work?

Same box, I think. Came with a little manual thingy. But all the discs were in one big disc case.

Installation is the same as with any other version. Getting it to work, it's been discussed in the MGE threads. You should check the last few, there's probably instructions or a "here's how I" in them a couple times.

Supposedly the code patch will still work. If it checks the checksum it shouldn't, unless they didn't modify Morrowind.exe.

If they didn't touch Morrowind.exe, then anything will work, you just can't use the Steam launcher (and by extension, the Steam in-game features).
