How much Armour do you think we can put on in TES 5

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:50 am

I just noticed something about Bethesdas games. in Morrowind you could put armour and jewelry on every part of your characters body, in Oblivion you only had a helmet, cuirass, gauntlets, greaves, shoes and jewelry and in Fallout 3 you could only put on an item of clothing that would cover your whole body, headgear and that was it.

What about in TES 5, will armour customization be a thing of the past??

Yeah, and then in FO3 they limited it even more to just helmet and body armour..

No indication of anything. The previous FO titles did the same thing.

I think we'll be able to equip more. There was a lot of complaints about not being able to customize your look, especially complaints about separating pauldrons from the cuirass. Also, there were a million and one complaints about not being able to wear clothes under armor, and robes over armor. I hated that my mage, while wearing the Savior's Hide, had to look like a backwater hick with his upper arms exposed like that. Ridiculous.

I think Bethesda's reason for limiting how much stuff your character could wear in Oblivion was to avoid clipping* or something. Personally as long as the clipping isn't terrible, it doesn't bother me. I really hope we can wear clothing under our armor and have seperate pauldrons again.

*I think "clipping" is the right term, but I'm not sure. If it's not, what I mean is objects passing through one another.

I don't mind a little bit of "clipping" if that comes with greater armor customization.

I'm thinking it will end up being similar to Oblivion.

Since most pauldrons are attached to body armor, there can be some explanation why certain armors might lack the ability to attach foreign armor pieces.

Fallout 3 is set in a modern setting. Therefore, clothing customization has a huge spectrum of possibilities and ergo more work for programmers and animators.

The one beef I have with Oblivion is that lack of armor diversity. In Morrowind you could wear clothes with your armor, mix and match pauldrons etc. I really miss that feature and hope to see it again.

Yea, could almost count the diversity of armor on 2 hands. There should be at least twice as much in the next game, hopefully even more. That and lack of weapon diversity + what you say about clothing is some of the few bit bad things about oblivion.

Creating your own armor sets would give us an other dimension when it comes to armor diversity. it would be pretty awesome if beth did something like that.

Or because one-piece suits with helmets was what Fallout 1 and 2 did, and Bethesda wanted to attempt to keep the already-somewhat-mutinous FO fanbase happy by continuing that trend and others like it.

Morrowind had more armor/clothing diversity and a larger spectrum of possibilities than FO3, and they handled clipping issues just fine. The clipping that was ineviatlbe was hardly noticeable. Far better than engaging in the little mixing and matching available in Oblivion, only to notice inconsistencies and seams in the meshes between upper and lower bodies.

Right pauldron
Left pauldron
Leggings
Right boot
Left boot

I dont think ive ever seen a game that allows you to wear one boot XD would be funny, but would seem kinda pointless maybe. Footstops would be a issue too.

I would personally go for:

Various Jewelry slots
Cloak
Belt
Head
Right/Left Gauntlet
Right/Left Pauldron
Legs
Boots
Outer Chest
Inner Chest

The Inner Chest slot would be for shirts and tunics, while the Outer Chest slot would be for coats and tabards. Both Cuirasses and Robes would be able to go into either slot, maximizing the amount of customization; so you can have robe over cuirass, cuirass over robe, tabard over cuirass, robe over tunic, and so on. Of course, you would only be able to have one cuirass equipped at a time; no wearing a daedric cuirass over another daedric cuirass.

hopefully bethesda will make the armor slots in TES:V like the armor slots in morrowind, because while playing oblivion i hated that i couldnt wear different pauldrons or wear clothes while wearing armor, and only being able to to wear a helmet and the full body outfit in FO3 completely murdered the game for me, and the fact that it wasnt open-ended.

Morrowind didn't have nearly enough slots or customization. Bring on the Daggerfall slots!

Slots, I'm not sure about.
Morrowind:
Clothes: Shirt, Pants, Boots(Negated by armor) Gloves(Negated by armor), Robe.
Armor: Cuirass, L/R Pauldrons, L/R Gauntlets, Helm, Greaves, Boots.
Accessories: 2 rings, one amulet.

Daggerfall:
Clothes: Shirt, Pants, Boots(Negated by armor) Gloves(I think), Robe/Hood.
Armor: Cuirass, L/R Pauldrons, L/R Gauntlets, Helm, Greaves, Boots.
Accessories: 2 Amulets, 2 Rings, 2 Bracers, 2 Marks, 2 Crystals.

OK, I see your point in the accessories dept.

Customization, most definitely. I want the "Use" functionality back; switching between hood-up and hood-down, switching between different armor visual styles, etc, etc.

Being able to create a truly unique look for your character in Morrowind was something that really drew me in. I would be extremely disappointed if they simplified the armor system even further. The armor customization in FO3 was terrible in comparison to TES. Losing pauldrons and the ability to use different gauntlets/bracers in TESIV was bad enough.

Hopefully Bethesda will bring back many of the things that were stripped out of the series between TESIII and TESIV.

I certainly hope there is more customization (i.e. equipment slots) in TES V than there was in Oblivion - something at least on par with Morrowind's system, but preferably even more. It's one of the things I game mechanics I was least happy to see Bethesda simplify.

I think if they go the FO3 route, LOTS of people will be absolutely PISSED.

BGS is smarter than that, luckily.

EDIT: Go the FO3 route with TES, I mean.

Agreed. Left and Right pauldrons and gauntlets. Boots, I can understand that a pair of the same type would be necessary for proper balance. Clothes under armor is very important - can't have those iron greaves chafing my nether regions. :hehe: I think gloves should be worn under gauntlets, too - I mean, it makes sense, yeah? Not sure about socks, that might be getting a little too silly.

I think maybe there should also be clothing items that do conflict with armor items. That way, characters who choose unarmored can equip items that will give them bonuses (mainly in the enchantment department). A bracelet would be the alternative to a gauntlet/bracer; armlets would be the alternative to pauldrons. Um. I guess gaiters would stand in for greaves? =/ Coat/jacket/vest would be the alternative to a cuirass. Might be too complicated to implement all those ideas, though.

EDIT: I hope we get belts back, along with the option for skirts AND pants, not magically morphing lower body wear. <_<

Personally, I'd rather have more types of armor than pieces to mix and match.

The glass armor mods are sweetness, for example. I like the Blue version, personally, but there's no reason why glass shouldn't come in a few different colors for variety. Perhaps even make them slightly different in properties (say, red protects better, green is more durable, and blue is lighter, with other combinations for any other colors that would "look cool").

Instead of just "Steel helmet", shouldn't we have "Nordic Steel Helmet" and "Imperial Steel Helmet", and possibly in Skyrim, a "Solitude Steel Helmet"? All with different designs, even if they offer the same protection?

For sheer coolness, multiple Dwemer and Elven styles as well, to show that the cultures weren't monolithic mass production entities, but were/are vibrant, creative cultures with multitudes of ideas on how armor might be designed better, or for a different purpose.

It would be very cool if they brought back a level of clothing slots like in Morrowind. What would be cooler is the ability to take armor in game and change the properties to your liking. For instance, you could take steel armor and change the colour of the various components, add crystals and gems, and place custom designs. It would require a lot of extra programming, but it would be amazing.
