How much gaming could I do while in university?

So i'm planning to get a new laptop soon, only i don't know whether i should get one thats better suited for gaming or just a normal average one. How much time do you think i'd have for gaming whilst in university? There's no point buying myself a nice gaming laptop and not use it often. Plus it'll probably be starting to get problems 4 years later, which would be a waste of paying for a better laptop. Alternatively i could not buy a new laptop and make do with playing on low-med detail, haha :D

No desktops unfortunately, i'll be staying in the hostel.

Depends on what you're studying, what specific classes you're taking, what your social life is like, and how quickly you finish your work.

Seriously. Could be anywhere from tons to none at all, it all depends on you.

If the past 4.5 years of my life has been any indication, a whole bloody lot. Seriously, probably more time than you've ever had before or will ever have again. University is largely short periods of intense work balanced out by longer periods of very little work.

Of course, it depends on the degree. My degree at the moment only give me around 12 contact hours a week, while other programs like Engineering can have up to 30 hours a week in first year.

I had lots of time for it, but that's probably because most of the friends I made were more interested in gaming than going out drinking every night.

Hey, let's throw in another round of "depends".

Sometimes you'll have it easy where you'll have easy classes since you'll understand the material and the prof, or you'll have a good ammount of background knowledge.

Other times, you might be doing written assignments that may or may not be hard depending on the subject and your writing ability.

Perhaps you'll be so "into" your course and driven to do your best that you'll forsake all other distractiosn and focus on the end result.

Then again, you might just show up, not do enough, and fall into the trap of "Oh crap! Now I really have a lot of time...and need to find a job

---

So there are many options, and you'll have at the minimum of 4 years. Chances are that you'll run into many scenarios.

So go out and by yourself a pack of advlt security undergarments and ponder it...it depends.

note: one or more of these have happened to me

In the very beginning? Probably very little till you have adjusted to your own college lifestyle. If you want to game enough? You will have plenty of time, even with some of the hardest classes. At least while you are still doing intro classes.

As others have stated, it really does depend on you. If you really want to game, you will have time. It will just come at the expense of other things. Honestly, I would try forgoing gaming your first semester and make friends instead. Making connections is one of the more important aspects of college.

Way too much. My university years were probably when I spent the largest fraction of my time gaming out of my entire life (while completing a chemistry BS and a math minor in 4 years). Of course, if you have a more active social life than I did then your gaming time could decrease significantly, although that's true for any phase of one's life. But barring other considerations (part-time job, taking on a very heavy class load, needing to study more than most for certain classes, etc) your time in university will afford you more free time than most other periods of your life. So decide what you actually want to do with that time, as university campuses and the surrounding areas tend to offer a lot of options there.
