How much political influence do the Elder Scrolls have?

Post » Sat Apr 02, 2011 2:57 am

Correct me if I wrong: From my understanding, the Elder Scrolls presaged the invasion of the dragons (which also entails the collapse of the Empire). If this is the case, why would the rulers not take it into account? Or would they even know?

The guy in the trailer says "We were warned",I guess it like global warming today - people know its happening, but don't bother doing greener things because they either believe the outcome wont be that bad as scientists say it will due to some crappy explaination or people just can't be arsed.

That event that presages their arrival? That's not it. It can't be. Their arrival's not going to happen for a long time yet.

Willful ignorance. It's a powerful thing.

The Nu-Mantia Intercepts contain evidence of this. Nu-Hatta, a Moth Priests, gives warnings, Ocato talks about how the Elder Council has more important things to think about.

The Wall in the trailer for Skyrim presages the return of the dragons. The Elderscrolls that cover what may be would be gibberish to a normal person. A Moth Priest can read and understand parts of the gibberish, but they would only act within the limits of thier Order. If a ruler used an Elder Scroll to try and prevent thier future from happening, thier actions would>likelyEDIT added likely.

If a ruler used an Elder Scroll to try and prevent thier furture from happening, thier actions would cause the prediction that they are trying to avoid to become reality.

Not necessarily. The Elder Scrolls don't predict the future with perfect certainty, So it's quite possible to steer things to a preferred future.

I agree with you, the nature of the ruler would determine thier actions and the results of thier attempts.

But in this case the moth priests aren't misinterpreting scrolls to keep the flock in line, a dragon really is going to eat the actual world, Co2 emissions and all.

Seriously though, the Elder Scrolls are constantly changing, they don't clearly prophesy anything so it's hard for anyone to act on the information until the event is under way, though as I recall the scrolls helped Uriel Septim decide to send the prisoner to Morrowind.

They could have rewrote the elder scrolls like in Oblivion when becoming the gray fox. Maybe.

No. There was no rewriting of the Elder scrolls in the Theives Guild quest-line. What happened was that the Grey Fox broke Nocturnal's curse by presenting incontrovertible proof of the identity of the original Gray Fox. The Curse is broken because the Gray Fox directly violates it.

Then what was the point of retrieving an elder scroll? I thought he tried things before without the cowl and she didn't recognize him.

The Elder Scroll IS the incontrovertible proof. Not even Nocturnal's curse can blot out the essential, fundamental truth contained within the Elder scroll. The Curse is broken when the Gray Fox presents this truth because such a presentation is in direct contradiction to the curse.

no. An elder scroll about the past will be 100% accurate. An elderscroll about the future is subject to change by a hero. Also, if an elderscroll vision about the future become public knowlege, it will likly change.

What?

The Nature of Nocturnal's curse is that the wearer of the Grey Cowl shall have their identities stripped from history and memory. So, if a person were to see the wearer of the Grey Cowl, they wouldn't be able to identify who they are beyond the fact that their wearing the grey cowl. Even if the wearer of the Cowl were to scream their identity from the rooftop, no one would hear it. But, NO ONE can deny the incontrovertible truth of the Elder Scrolls. When the Gray fox declares Emil (sp?) Dareloth as the original Grey Fox, no one, no thing, no power (not even the curse) can deny that truth because it came directly from the Elder Scroll. The Curse is broken because it is directly defied.

What aren't you getting about this?
