How much time do you spend on the face editor?

Post » Fri Sep 17, 2010 10:55 am

Pretty self-explanatory. How much time do you usually spend customizing your character's face? I usually just spend 5-10 minutes. I take the default face, narrow the nose, round the face and tweak the mouth a bit, but other than that I don't change anything. The only exception is with Altmer. I spend 30-60 minutes on them. (stupid long faces)

10-15 minutes but I only play Dunmer so I know my way around the face.

Under a minute, randomize until I can get a decent face, and presto, done.

11-13 seconds, for....

- turn eyes blue;
- longest hair:
- hair colour fair.

i often get fps of 5-15, coz of hardware issues, so i hav no patience to deal with it.

Shortly after Oblivion came out I started making one character about 7:00 AM on a Saturday morning. I finally had a face I was fairly happy with about 11:00 PM that night. But usually it takes me about four hours.

I will possibly skip a step or two if I feel it looks good when I get to it, so it takes 10-20 minutes at the most.

I've been working on perfecting Valiri's face since I got the game. I still haven't got it right. I think this could be a source of my restartitus. Every once in a while I'll restart her just to see if I can stumble on a better face. Starting with the default female breton I can get it pretty close to what I want now and it only takes me a few minutes. Of course I've decided recently that Bosmer was a better race for her from an RP stand point so essentialy, I had to start all over. In the end I ended up making a custom race with the CS which is pretty much a breton with elf ears (with other statistical changes of course) just so I could balance RPing with the face generator without having a psychotic episode. I've discovered that the Brow/nose/chin ratio can make a huge difference. I've also discovered that making the jaw thinner doesn't make as much of a change as I want it to.

If I really want to sit down and tinker with it though, I'll turn on some music and spend hours with it. When I first got the game I would spend hours making a face only to find that the result doesn't look all that different from the default face.

Interesting most people so far don't spend alot of time. I might make a random character one of these days. Why not? But I usually spend somewhere between a half hour and an hour.

I just go from one slider to the next, usually. Push them this way and that to see what happens. Then I'll put the slider where I'd like it to be and move on to the next. Sometimes I'll go back.

Not that much, can get really complicated and I don't mind the default settings, and I always play human like characters so the perks that come with non humans that are kinda cool don't apply. So probably 5 minutes maybe.

Forever.

Okay, maybe not forever, a good 20-30 minutes though.

I've made tons of faces, probably about 10x more than characters I've played for more than 10 minutes, which is about 20.

I'm used it it by now, I know what looks good, what does what, and what changes what. If you make a character have an insanely large forehead, their skin becomes baby-soft (but it's not worth it if their eyes move apart abnormally and their faces deform), if you add a beard it changes the body color (mostly affected by Beard Light/Dark and Beard Cheeks), if you add eyeliner a character's skin becomes more yellow, if you make a character have a "Beard Circle" that's dark, then their Lips are going to turn an odd pale color that's hard to fix (which is why I made http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac87/MartutTES/ArthurReturningHome.jpg http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac87/MartutTES/ArthurTheKnight2.png facial hair instead)

But yeah, it depends on the race.

  • Khajiit/Argonian minimal amount of time. Changing hair, maybe a few other things, but mostly leaving it alone.
  • Orc takes a little bit longer, maybe 6-7 minutes.
  • Humans average at about 15 minutes.
  • Dunmer are about 20 minutes.
  • High Elves are about 25 minutes.
  • Wood Elven males are about 15 minutes.
  • Wood Elven females... are at least half an hour if not more.

5-15 minutes messing with a Beast race. Beast race are so much easier to felt its "finish" as to compare to the humans and mers. Face replacer mod for those guys instead.

Only ever made 2 faces. The first one took me about 2 hours I'd say (Camarilla), and the 2nd one about half an hour (test dummy). I draw a lot, and as soon as I found out how the sliders were connected (jaw affects chin and mouth, cheeks affects nose and eyes etc.) I just went for the features I find attractive and modeled an old drawing, and voila. Now I can probably do them in half and hour every time, but I love playing with the sliders and getting different results just for fun.

I spend about 15 - 30 minutes at character generation to make the face. Typically I use the randomize button for a few minutes until I find something I like, then start tweaking it from there. Then I will often go back afterward and continue making tweaks as I play. I might spend another 10-15 minutes total doing that, although it is hard to really judge. Plus I will sometimes just change their hairstyle from time to time.

Lately I have been downloading saved characters that I like and using Face Exchange to copy the faces to a save of my own. Then I typically still tweak them for about 5-10 minutes.

No need to restart the game just to work on your face, just open the console and type in showracemenu. That gives you the face gen menu. However, there is a trick you have to do to save your game. When you are done making all of your changes, under no circumstances press the last button to accept the changes to the race/face! If you do it will screw up all your stats. With the console prompt still open, press escape and save the game. Then press escape again and open that savegame.

With a Breton I tend to just change age, complexion, and hair, so 10-30 sec... The beasts will be 1-2 minutes... the others 1-10 minutes.

20 minutes, up to half an hour. I take my time, and do things right. Im sure there are some people here who would agree that the time I spend isn't wasted. ;)

Yikes! I spend about 45 minutes to an hour on each face. Tweaking settings, going back, re-tweaking. I mean, I have to look at that face all game, it better be good.

Holy crap!

I thought I took a long time. Comparatively though, you make me look easy to please.

I usually spend about half an hour on some characters. Lyriel Tailas (in her current guise) took 43 minutes. However, I've been trying to work out a face that looks "right" for a few days. That's pretty much the only reason I keep restarting her.

np, I learned it from other folks here. I always make a hard save before I do any face changing as well. That way if I do not like how it comes out I can go right back to how things were without losing any progress in the game.

I've known for a while about the console command but I never knew I could get around the stats screwing. I'm definitely going to try that the next time I get the itch, thanks. You've likely just saved me a lot of hassle.

Like SubRosa, I cycle through a bunch of randoms until I find one that's not too bad, then spend a fair amount of time tweaking it. Then play. Once playing, I will often open the command console and do some fine tuning. Even after hundreds of hours, my char still gets the occasional tiny nip/tuck. Lol.

I recently installed Wrye Bash and have so very much to learn about it, but I'm delighted that I can take a face from a saved game and import it to a new character. I fully expect I will start my character anew in another couple hundred hours or so.

Oh, and yes, SubRosa's advice on make a hard save before console tweaking your character and save rather than exit from the console is spot on. :)

I just used the default Oblivion face for a while. It didn't look too bad.
Then I decided to give editing it a shot.
I'm not sure if I've made an improvement on her though. I sure hope so.
