How much do you pay for new games in your country?

Post » Wed Jan 07, 2015 2:09 am

I'm interested to see how much people pay for new games in different countries and how the prices vary.
I'm now on the Xbox One and new games all seem to be about £60.00 (approx $90.00 or 76 Euros)
What do you pay and do you feel that you are getting good value?

I know Brazil is notoriously expensive for video games. Are you on PC or console? If console how much is a new one there at the moment?

The last new game I bought was Skyrim. It was $59.99 USD. I have no idea if the average price for a new game has gone up since then.

This is for consoles. PC gaming is cheaper. A lot cheaper. But to build a PC for gaming be ready to put more than 4000 dollars. About the console prices, well, Xbox One costs 950 dollars and PS4... Well... 1500 dollars. Microsoft is on an epic crusade against Brazilian stupid Taxes since Xbox360. If it wasn't for Microsoft, gaming would still being a thing for upper classes here.

I was gonna say Skyrim too, but realize I bought Banished early last year. Don't recall what I paid for it, but being an indie title it didn't cost anywhere near what a AAA title from a major developer goes for. Otherwise my few purchases were old titles made compatible with modern computers and available at GoG. Bought Wizardry 6+7 for a few dollars only several months ago.

The only big developer titles I will consider buying new near their date of release is the Elder Scrolls series. Even those I would normally wait on until the price drops to an affordable level, but at my age I'm no longer sure I can hold out long enough for that to happen.

So about £600+ for X1 and £1000 for PS4. Wow that's really expensive. X1 here about £300 ($450) and PS4 about the same. That's some serious taxation you have there. Are you allowed to import games yourself or are they still subject to the taxes when they enter the country?

Uhm.... NO. Please don't go around telling people that because it is not true. This ridiculous misconception is probably why the majority of Skyrim players are on consoles because they think they need to sell their houses to build a computer.

No one in their right mind will pay the much for a computer unless you want to run a server or something. At most and I'm not including those overly powerful CPUs and GPUs, you need 900-1100. Even less if you already have things like monitor, DVD drive, HDDs, mouse, keyboard, LEGAL copy of your OS..

Nevermind, I see you live in Brazil.

In the US, between $50 and $60 for a standard game (not a collector's edition). I'm irritated that developers have been latching onto the trend of charging $60 for a PC game over the last couple of years.

I rarely buy more than 2 or 3 new games a year, though. For awhile when I was in my first few years at college and had very little time to play, I wasn't buying any new games. These days, the only games I tend to buy new are console games (PS3, and now PS4) since PC games often go on sale online not long after release.

$64.95 and that is with tax included. Personally, if games ever reached the 90 dollar mark I'd give up on them forever. No way in hell am I paying that much. Hell, I don't even buy new games anymore cause I think 64 bucks is too much.

The only games I buy nowadays are those old ones not many people like to play. 10 or 20 bucks is ALWAYS better for me.

Greece: Newly arrived PS3 games at 59.90 Euros (71.32 USD)

PS4 games at 69.90 Euros (83.23 USD)

However, the prices going down after 3 months or so...

Used games are much cheaper as well.

Taking the recently released Dragon Age: Inquisition as an example, the PC version here in Sweden cost 450kr (€48, $57, £37) and the console version cost 600kr (€64, $76, £50).

That said, the swedish currency gotten a lot weaker in the past year, so for non-swedes the prices here been dropping with about 20% during that time.

Well we can... But it takes time until we actually get the product.I imported a Chelsea T-Shirt and it took 5 months. By the time I got the shirt, Frank Lampard was already in Manchester City

LOL. So a "new" game for you would actually be 5 months old by the time you got it, hardly worth the saving that you would make on the game really. Why does it take that long to ship something?

Here in Poland, brand new PC AAA games are usually between 120-150 PLN (130 PLN equals to 36$ or 30€). Console games are significantly more expensive, with the XOne and PS4 titles costing even up to 280PLN (77$ or 65€).

This basically means, that there's rarely any point in buying brand new AAA game through Steam, when you can get it in a shop for half the price and then activate the Steam code anyway. Especially that Steam doesn't support our currency, and that means exchange fees. Sometimes even the big sales aren't as nice as standard shop prices here.

As for PC part pieces, I'm not changing them very often so I might not know the newest releases and prices. Basically, in April 2014, I bought I5-4570, 8GB RAM, MSI GTX 760, genuine Windows 8.1 and other things like case, mobo etc (though no monitor or other peripherals) for about 3200 PLN, that's about 890 USD. No idea 'bout consoles really, never been interested in any of them.

This is where I'm at too. With tax it's about $63.00 typically for a new game.

I got the Anthology set in 2013 for about $90.00, with tax. What a bargain for 5 games in a nicely-boxed set.

Most games I have bought that are new cost approximately $60 (USD) + 6% Pennsylvania sales tax. (In the US, sales tax rates vary from state to state, and from item to item...generally clothing and food are not taxed, but prepared food is. This also does not include taxes which the retailer pays before selling items...like cigarettes and alcohol).

However in the past sometimes that has been higher. I remember in the 80's paying over $100 for a new game. It was worth every penny though. Phantasy Star set the tone for all video game RPGs that followed.
