Nope, that was his name. I don't think we can choose our surname but I also don't think anyone knows that it is. People don't refer to your name, Codsworth does. He's the NPC that has a lot of common names recorded.
that we know of.
if they did Fallout's version of Skyrims marriage and you get the option to remarry. .. .
Seriously though siting there voice recording a list of 1000 names? Especially if they have to give a Happy-sad-angry-enraged-horified and so on version? it would be like reading the ultimate phone book from hell.
I think they went with Howard because it can work for both first and last names, and if Codsworth was calling the PC "Mr. Todd" people would expect him to murder people while singing and cutting hair.
It's worth testing out just to see it in action once.
Not sure how far the whole calling you by name goes, sofar only your robo-butler does. Basicly they have a list of names ingame that he can say, kinda like how games like Fifa and NBA let the commentator say specific names cause their in a database, thus recognizing that you use them.
Also, maybe Todd isn't in the list ......................................
they probably went for 20 or so for each six that would cover half of us, add in the different spellings
I wonder how we will know what names are in that 1000?
type in a name and see if codsworth says it lol , i bet you get a message saying 'name not on list '
"Howard" is a really odd choice, given that I don't think I've ever met someone with that given name--but I've known a decent number of people named Todd.
It would be nice of them to publish a list so we don't have to guess.
Do people really use their real names in RPGs...? I never would.
Howard is much more common in my experience than Todd. And most people I've met named Todd are... weird.
I think both are in the game considering Todd Howard was in charge of it. Doubt either of his names fell to the wayside.
I just want a list of names recorded for Codsworth.
My guess is if you put in a name not in Codsworth's list you get a unique little interaction where Codsworth "glitches" and the character grumbles about the software.
Be even more amusing if a name not in Codsworth's list defaults to "Mister Anderson".
Might be a regional thing (no idea where you're from); in the Eastern US it's certainly not common. I do have to rephrase my earlier statement, though: I've never met anyone under 50 named Howard; it's a name that definitely sounds "old" to me. For a game set in a 1950s-inspired setting, though, that's not really a problem--my last FNV character was named "Hogarth" (I forget his last name, but it was not Hughes ) and my current FNV character is "Buck Bacall" (a combination of Buck Rogers and Lauren Bacall) so...Yeah, slightly old-fashioned names are fine in Fallout.
For those who are interested, http://youtu.be/-3nYFn-aIno?t=1m41s is what Codsworth says if your name isn't in the list. (In this case, the character's name is Phil Spencer.)
He'd probably just refer to you as Sir / Ma'am.. English Buttler thing and all..
That's probably why it is Codsworth, and maybe only Codsworth that says your name. It probably keeps that same tone of voice no matter what is happening so there isn't a need to record the names more than once.
I posted a http://youtu.be/-3nYFn-aIno?t=1m41s in my post above with Codsworth's line if your name isn't on the list
I'm kind of disappointed that the game can't just parse the name and either call the PC Phil or Spencer, but that would probably take too much extra work for what it would do.
phil isn't a common name ,the full version phillip is.
Listen to the E3 presentation again. Codsworth says "Mr. Howard" in very different tones when he sees you again for the first time since the Great War compared to when he's telling you the baby has been changed.
I'd say "Phil" is very common. I'd also says it's silly to not include shorter versions of names (Andy vs Andrew, Sam vs Samuel etc.)
