How to Play Melee? How to close the gap without dying?

Post » Fri Dec 04, 2015 9:55 am

I would like to ask how to play Melee in Fallout 4.

Just started my second playthrough as a Melee character. First playthrough was as a stealthed sniper.

I have the inherent problem of dying very fast trying to close the distance. Even with Dodge, Root, Action Boy and Blitz. My health constantly drops and I die sooner or later. It is worst in the open world or in large rooms with multiple enemies all around.

Melee is OPed when I close the gap, but before that I tend to die for fun. Anyone have any tips on how to not die before I close the gap?

Thanks and Regards.

Power armor or better armor in general would be the key I would think. You can also use vats.

VATS + Sneak + Melee = Most game-breakingly overpowered Fallout 4 mechanic

Also, you could pretty much block anything including a Super Mutant Behemoth strike and enemies can do the same as well.

Fallout 4 would have the best melee out of all the BGS games in my opinion if they would fix those two mechanics.

Depends, are you trying to close the gap by sneaking, or are you just running at them like a wild banshee? I got 4 perks in sneak, shadowed armor, and a couple skill books..and can sneak up on just about anyone...except lighting is a factor tho as well..

Blitz works in conjunction with VATs I believe.. otherwise I don't think it does anything by itself.

Hp's are going to be your obvious friend with a melee character. Strength is something you can build up over time and really don't need to start with so much. I'd start with just a 2 in strength and work on the melee perks. Endurance I'd probably want to start at a 9 and then use the Special book to immediately boost that to 10. With Endurance I'd concentrate on Solar Powered and Toughness. 9 Might be a good starting point for agility as well. That gets you blitz early.... of course you could also just start with 6 and put those points into avoidance. Avoidance only works while you're sprinting.. but if you're sprinting to close the gaps then that's a good thing. The rest of the points you can distribute however you want.

Like any character, learning the strategies that best suit that character is part of the fun. At first, even if I was a melee guy, I'd still probably do a lot of hiding behind cover. Wait for the enemy to get close enough and then spring out for the kill. Another strategy that would work well would be to combine sneak and melee. Take the Ninja perk and Mister Sandman Perk for some extra OP damage with melee sneak attacks.

Have you spent any perks on damage resistance? It's one of my go-to perks.

Stealth Sniper > That. I've played both to their maximum potential, Sniping was just the same thing but easier because I got hit less, and getting sneak-attacks off was quite a bit more common especially in maps with 6+ enemies in one spot.

-Sniping Lets you do pretty much same thing but from a much farther distance, much less perks/lvls, being able to get the headshot multiplier, being able to target suicide bomber arms, MUCH better non-vats play for those rare moments you are caught with no AP, and stay in stealth more often and easily. They are close though. THE BIGGEST difference I noticed after many hours: It deals with Assaultron Dominators MUCH easier, possibly the toughest mob in the game.

-Wounding Combat Shotgun is just on another level of broken though. Like 3 seconds to kill a Legendary Assaultron Dominator, vs. god knows how long as melee I stopped counting the seconds because he perma blocks and can't be reliably targeted in Vats or Blitz'd.

But I'll agree those setups are among the top 3 game breaking. Mostly has to do with ninja and crit banker being ludicrous for any high base damage weapon, and shotgun pellets being bugged multiplying legendary effects like crazy. If they ever fix the lame blocking system vats-blitz ninja melee might go to first place, stupid Dominators.

Get blitz and a high damage melee/unarmed weapon, use vats a lot. Build for vats. Try to stay in it as much as possible.

Get ballistic helmet/chest weave asap. (Google how, spoilers).

Damage Resistance... and Endurance yea should put point in it. Now most of my points is in Agility and Strength perks.

Option 1: Power Armor/Pain Train abuse.

Option 2: VATS/Blitz abuse.

Or at least have some form of ranged attack, like the handy dandy frag grenade.

Also, instead of chasing foes, have them chase you and drop mines as you go - boom boom boom death.

I'd say play it tactically. If you encounter a particulary large group of let's say, super mutants, you can sneak around and take down two or three with your melee weapon and then charge the rest.

Or if you want to just WAAAGH the hell out of them up your endurance to 9<10 take damage resistance perks , life giver etc and you should be set.

Sprint from target to target and smack them down? Use Chems to keep yourself going, get decent armour - metal early on and combat armor later in the game. I am playing my second melee character on survival and i am not really having any issues outside of power armor. I play straight up Melee, high strength + endurance. I prefer it that way, no vats just smacking heads without it. And well get endurance perks for more health and damage resistance, plus perks for more melee/unarmed damage. As soon as you hit Diamond City get yourself a Swatter aswell, and mod it.

Melee is such a different playstyle to sniping. One is run away from danger and the other is run towards it.

Last playthrough seldom used drugs but as a melee toon, finding cooking and drugs really help tons. Also using VAT tons for Blitz.

Thanks all, already seeing much improvement in my survival :P

Option 3 : unarmed with Gun Fu ( 10 agi ) and plenty of luck. Paralyze everybody in vats!

prolly best to go with a tank build and a lot of sneak.

also, maybe treat the syringe gun as a blow dart to pacify the deadly enemies.

Keep in mind that Big Leagues rank 5 is presently utterly broken and reverts to rank 1 or unranked. If you're on PC, a mod exists to patch it - yes, already - but FO4Edit stuff is known for being unstable, so tradeoffs.
