How do I play the free dagerfall

Post » Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:33 am

Ok I never used dosbox before and it seems the official bethesda guide and the guide by Freddo are terrible at explaining this to noobs (no offence) its just I never used dosbox and they are explained like I a supposed to know.

THis is what I did so far

I saved the DAGGER file to the dosgames file which is located in C: theres also a file named DFCD in there too. What do I do from here?
Please can you be specific I never used dosbox before and don't really know much on computer stuff so if you just say a random file type it'll take me an hour to find PLEEEEEEEASE help and be specific.

The installation guide is straight forward mate. I too never used dosbox some months ago, but the guide all it needs is to be followed step by step.

The guide doesn't really tell you to do anything with DFCD, so, you don't do anything with it. Simple.

Hello Gro Khash. I had a very hard time understanding what to do as I am a total noob with DOSbox too.
After Tesfanner's message and reading the link he gave, my post seems useless so *erases it*.

The guide given by Bethesda is about as straight forward as it gets.

Erm... Took me very long to write down all this. Tesfanner pasted the http://static.gamesas.com/downloads/games/daggerfall_legal_and_installation.pdf

And... my my it's really clear. I wish I installed the game using that at 1st.

Well thank you Tesfanner. *edit* sorry for typo on your name.

Since I was never able to make game and patch work, I'll try from scratch with the link you gave.

I used http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1012957&st=0&start=0 and it seemed pretty straight forward and dosbox-noob friendly. I haven't actually read the original instructions so don't know how much different they are

Since it looks like you've finished, I'm hijacking this thread for my own purposes. Fifteen "I can't get Daggerfall to run" threads isn't pretty.

So, I installed using the original instructions, and everything works fine with the install. But when I launch DOSbox, and type these lines (as it says in the guide):

mount c c:\dosgames -freesize 1000
mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall
c:
cd\dagger
dagger

I get the message "Looks like you inserted the wrong CD. Please insert your Daggerfall CD in you cdrom and try again"

When I try the lines from the alternative install guide to launch;

mount c c:\dosgames -freesize 1000
c:
cd dagger
fall z.cfg

the game starts, but it's real slow and the mouse doesn't work.

Any idea on how to get the game started?

I remember back when I attempted to install Daggerfall a year ago. I got so confused I eventually just started punching things in that seemed right. Amazingly, it worked.

Would have saved me a lot of clicking around my user profile if I'd known that start menu link was there. :D

Those instructions do say how to get the mouse working right IIRC, but if it doesn't just hit CTRL+F10 when the game starts.

Arthura Dent - for the speed you'll want to edit the configuration and set cycles=max

Address the mouse issue separately if / when you get the game running at a reasonable speed. If it's not working at all that's one thing, but if it's working but wierd, you'll likely want to change the controls a bit (hit escape when in game and play with the configuration.) Not sure what to say if it's not working at all :(.

for those saying that it isn't working make sure you renamed your DFInstall folder to dosgames, or just substitute DFInstall for dosgames when the instructions says

did you mount c:\DFInstall\DFCD as d: or C:\dosgames\DFCD as d:

like so for me:
mount d: c:\DFInstall\DFCD -t cdrom -label Daggerfall

you replace c:\DFInstall\DFCD with the location of your DFCD folder from the Daggerfall zip
