How popular are TES games?

Post » Fri May 28, 2010 6:59 am

There is a lot of talk about TES movies etc. I was wondering, despite the fact that most people on these forums are hardcoe tes fans, what about the rest of the world? Has the average person even heard of them? I know that the popularity of the series jumped with Oblivion, but if you ask average Joe, does he know anything about the game? If you look at the games that get made into movies - Halo, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, most people have somehow heard of these games. MK was controversial and so even my mother had heard of it, RE has toy lines and tv shows, and Halo is, well, huge. Do people know TES? Did the book sell well?

Definitely not as well known as halo, but it Is a series that got it's start on the pc, as opposed to the xbox. PC gaming never really was super popular. The games got increasingly more popular with the addition of console gamers. Morrowind and Oblivion did that. Unless someone is associated with the video game culture, I doubt they will recognize TES. How many people knew about Hitman before the movie?

In my community, TES has become much more well known after Fallout 3.

Lets ask Google by links:

Morrowind 2,250,000
Oblivion 14,700,000
Halo 58,400,000
FO3 12,600,000
FF 77,600,000
Doom 35,500,000
Gothic 47,500,000

Of course we need to take into consideration Google's search engine. Oblivion, Doom, Halo, Gothic have multiple search contexts. Morrowind... Mmmm, not so much.

Most of my friends enjoy TES, and most of my WoW buddies have either heard of it, or played it and liked it. I've honestly never met someone who said something bad about Morrowind.

Yeah, all of my gaming buddies really love The Elder Scrolls.

Something I should note, and I hope someone at Bethesda reads this, is that all of us (10+) are primarily console gamers and only one of us liked Oblivion better than Morrowind. That's also relevant to any PC elitists that think console gamers want dumbed down games.

You only need to look at Oblivion's sales numbers to realize it's very popular. However, TES will never be on GTA or COD level simply because it's way too complex for average Joe with all those skills, stats and all those other menus which even I, series veteran, found confusing at first.

Yeah, and it's a RPG with elves, magic and all that other nerd stuff. On the other hand playing GTA or COD is considered almost trendy. Fallout actually has a better chance to reach high popularity if they improve combat like Bioware has done with ME2.

Considering that there is not a TES game pumped out every year, like COD..
The fan-base is large, it is up to Bethesda to market it well to get more interested parties.

You should visit the NWN forums sometimes. Some people there hate the TES series

All of my gaming friends know oblivion, and half of them know Morrowind, and 25% of them don't like it. Never really thought Morrowind pre-oblivion has a big game, which made me even happier cuz I could let other people know of this great game and they'd thank me later ^^

You obviously have never met those annoying ADD gamers, who'll play nothing but call of duty...

Anyways, I don't think TES was popular before Oblivion.. I know one person in real life who's actually heard of Morrowind before I told them.

Oblivion introduced me to the world of gaming. svcked me in big time and I've still got Morrowind and FO3 yet to explore. I like the open-style world, but have yet to compare it with more linear games.

I'm an "older than most of you" female. Every once in awhile I bump into other females who are my age that have also fallen in love with this TES game.

I also occasionally run into a few who play WOW and/or have been gaming for years.

Huge, untapped market here.

Obviously if you don't agree with someone they must have some kind of mental disorder. It couldn't possibly be that they just don't share your tastes. Right?

How do you think game developers could better appeal to people in your demographic?

Yeah, I generally try and stay away from those types of close minded people. I have a vast array of friends and ethical backgrounds etc, but some people are just unbearable.

They're relatively unpopular. Most people that game where I'm from have heard of it, they just can't take the time to get into them. This applies more to Morrowind however. Most of my friends have played and fell in love with Morrowind and were sorely disappointed by Oblivion. I'd love to see them make another game like Morrowind but I can't see them doing it. The vast majority of people nowadays just don't want to be challenged. They expect now to play through a game and get all the achievements, that is their only goal.

It's a crappy shame.

Really? Given the fact I said I have a vast array of friends that like all types of things?
I heard associating with hypocrites just for the hell of it makes you cool, and less of a hypocrite yourself.
Simple fact of life; there are certain people who you avoid. Try and make a little more sense next time, brobedos.
And your personal attacks in post against me is getting pretty annoying, I suggest you stop and take it to PMs lest you get reported. But, I'm sure you have a fancy retort for that, too.

My farther was an avid D&D gamer in the 70's through the 80's getting him to play Morrowind made him want to play Oblivion. Even his friends liked the ES series.

The beautiful graphics, alchemy, shiny treasures to decorate the homes, horses, and a nice assortment of light armor and enchanted bows were a draw for me.

Pets, more rare treasures, better jewelry, statues, more elegant armor/clothing combinations, more ingredients with unusual affects, recipes, unusual potions or wines/drinks, Clannfear eggs, Imp nests, baby animals in general, a change in seasons, ways to spend or invest money, striking hidden places, fountains, interior music selection, jewelry boxes and candles you could place where you want, portable camp sites, the ability to shape-shift, disguises, larger assortment of shoes and robes, light weight staffs with crystals in them, secret rooms and places, charm wildlife spells, cauldrens, hair combs which could be enchanted, stands which will display Varla stones upright, treasure maps, and the ability to tell your horse to stay or come to you, a nice male companion with his own horse...would all be nice.

(I know some of these are already in mods.)

Storywise, rare ingredient quests, saving animals, maybe a bit of romance, archeology, psychological twists, lost and restless spirits, and underwater adventures.

All-in-all, I already find Oblivion very appealing (I haven't even used a mod yet) the way it is.

more rare treasures

There is definitely a lot more of this in Morrowind. The dungeons didn't have randomized loot, so they basically hand crafted each tomb, ruin, dagoth stronghold. Lot's of artifacts from TES lore were placed in dungeons, because the loot does not level in Morrowind.
