HOW I ROLL....

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:52 am

Due to playing a lot of Fallout 3, I decided that for New Vegas I would adopt a certain playing method and stick to it to insure realism (as best as possible)

1. No fast travel. I like to set up several quest situations after a while so that wherever I may go, there will be a relevant quest to deal with. It's fun after a while to just roam around where you feel like going, as in "gee, I haven't been there for a while".

2. I play on "normal" setting, mainly because a couple of .44 magnum rounds to the head should KILL A COYOTE, thank you. It's more realistic to make your character more vulnerable rather than make the game so hard you need nukes to kill a bloatfly.

3. I don't use any armor above "10" DT. Most of the time I wear generic outfits, like leather or heck, if you find the game too easy just truck around in your underwear.

4. I don't limit my firepower to balance the underwear issue out.

5. I'm tempted to try the DID (dead is dead) strategy; in the meantime I allow my character nine lives; I keep track and on death number 10 my character is retired, unless it's the final battle with the Legion (I mean, c'mon)

6. I try and get all companions and give them all a fair amount of time; however, I sometimes go on a quest without them.

So add your own thoughts on your playing style, I'd like to hear about them.

After using all of the companions and doing their quests multiple times, I've found new fun in being a lone wolf. No shoddy AI, harder situations, etc. Besides mods, I play normal difficulty, hardcoe mode, limited fast travel, and I walk from place to place instead of jog. Except sometimes the latter gets painfully boring on long stretched of highway, so I usually walk until I get bored. I do this because it feels more natural and with the timescale, the time between places is more realistic for both the real life distance and the context of the game.

After a handful of playthroughs, the only rule I follow is attempting to create a unique character.

I roll DEEP.

No but seriously, I try not to treat it like a job or something with a litany of rules to limit my fun. I can only play on hardcoe as "normal" mode is a bit of a joke. Got a few mods to make hardcoe legitimately hardcoe as well. I'll also limit my character to two larger weapons (a hunting rifle and a lever shotgun, for instance) along with a pistol of some kind as a sidearm as it's more realistic than zipping up and down the Mojave with a portable armory in my pocket.

Same limits for me,, but ofc I play with a bunch of mods, I wouldnt touch this game without Arwens complete package anymore :D

Adds so much immersion. Invisible wall remover is a must have too, and others

Welcome to the forums. Here is a New Vegas http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/Dino-Fishy.jpg

Myself, I create a PC and play them as I see them. (If they are gruff and abrasive, then that's the attitude I give them ~unless I've decided that they only just look that way :P).

I have never played the game without HC mode in effect; so I always play HC.
I have no qualms about using Fast Travel [IE. foot travel, on the overland map]. I will use it at any time and anyplace where it seems appropriate or convenient (even if the place I am heading is within sight).
As FT is just an implied walk, I don't find this to be unrealistic. My peeve about it though, is that for some (odd) reason you can't use FT in HC mode with a busted leg... Which is kind of counter-intuitive, since having a busted leg naturally suggests using FT to bypass the tedious limping and the [RL] time that it takes to walk back to town, or the to Doc's.
(Bypassing it in RL, not the game's time of course.)

I use the best possible armor that I can get ~to me that seems the most reasonable true-to life thing you can do in this post apocalyptic situation. Mods that make PA immune to small arms fire are a good thing IMO. :chaos:
(As they most certainly would be, if the military took the time to design and create them.)

I have never accepted a companion yet ~so I can't say much about them. (I'm not adverse to having NPCs, but I don't like what I've seen about them loaning you perks. In Fallout 2, an NPC might offer to do a job if they were better at it than the PC, but that's more like a favor than a 'magical' bonus that only works while they are with you.)

I do play 'DiD' style games, but usually only after I have played through to the end at least once ~unless I am playing multi-character games , as I am with 'Temple of Elemental Evil' in Ironman Mode.

My only playstyle is "Very Hard", "kill anything that gets in my way" and "collect all teddy bears".

Also, no power armor...and a low XP mod=only about half the Perks/levels. Gear means more than levels in this game. imo.

There are a couple of rules I live by in Fallout NV. Lets get started:

RULE NUMBER 1. Get caps. Doesn't matter how just keep on raking en in. Caps lets you buy stuff like weapons. Bottom line the ore caps you have the easier it is to kill people.

RULE NUMBER 2. Be a [censored] tank! When in a combat situation use the best armor available.

RULE NUMBER 3. If its crimson...POP DAT [censored]AS HEAD OFF. Burry these SOB's in the ground. Leave one survivor so he can go home to [censored] about it to Caesar.

RULE NUMBER 4. Carry anti venom. Cazadores got nothing on you know.

RULE NUMBER 5. Attack from stealth. Catch your foes off guard. The ideal battle is when no one ever knew it happened. However that does not mean dont....

RULE NUMBER 6. TO LIGHT THAT [censored]A UP LIKE THE 4TH OF JULY! Do not hesitate to do so if the situation calls for it. Watch and learn....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0v4yVGicsY
skip to 34 seconds in

RULE NUMBA 7. Conserve ammo. When the legion sends and assasination squad against me I bring out the fists and trounce those mofos! Saving ammo means saving money.

RULE NUMBA 8. If you encounter a jerk in the wasteland, try to defuse the situation. WITH THE BUSINESS END OF A SHOTGUN! Make a name for yourself.

LASTLY FIGH HARD, FIGHT FAST AND [censored] THEM UP! ARH?

I forgot to add that I now try to maintain a low profile, and will run away from fights if it seems viable. I also limit the weapons I am carrying, and loot selectively (I will look and generally take things like caps, water, food, and occasionally a weapon or ammo.

I treat it like a video game. Because it is.

If you can call it "immurzhun" (I won't type that word correctly because doing so will make me vomit in disgust) then I probably don't do it.

My first playthrough, I just try to go with my gut. My 2nd I focus on exploring – both exploring the world and exploring the quest options I didn’t use the first time through.
And then I like to get creative. Obviously that includes my ‘Average Joe’ games where I try to avoid plots all together.

But hardcoe, all the time.

It's also a video game which is supposed to be at least amusing even if not amusing in the comedic sense. (Amusing also means 'providing entertainment')

And, with all due respect, nobody ever said video games needed to be difficult.

I play on normal. It helps bring some IMMERSION to the game. Nothing svcks more than killing Lanius in 1 hit from a 2mm pistol and he dies.

Always use some form of Power Armor

Tank in almost every situation

Run in fast, strike hard.

Conserve ammo.

Get rich.

Steal what I want.

Are all things I do no mater what play through.

For sure. I carry lots of teddy bears and drop them on the bodies of the Legion dudes I've iced. Just to make Caesar mad. I also leave teddy bears in various locations as markers as well. One thing that would be neat in the Fallout games (especially when dungeon diving) would be to have some flares. Some of the vaults and caverns can be tricky when it's time to leave.
