How scary do you want it?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:02 am

Usually, the anticpation of something terrible is far more frightening than the actual thing itself. Hearing sounds from a creature nearby which is capable of killing you is scary. Having the creature jump out at you is startling, but less scary than not finding it but knowing that you might at any time.

Oblivion put all the gore and horror in your face from the first moment you entered the realm, and after a few minutes of that, there was nothing left to be frightened about, just a bunch of additional stuff to fight. 20 or 30 gates later (Yawn) it's all just more of the same, with fresh graphics for the latest "scaled" versions of whatever creatures you happened to be grinding your way through.

If I'm in a cave that I know to be filled with monsters in the middle of a night during a blizzard in the middle of nowhere, I should be legitimately scared of monster attacks.

fo3 was probably scarier because you could relate to the story a little. real places modern weaponry etc.
oblivion made you like achilles. unstoppable. in fo3 there were things that could easily kill you if not fought correctly. In oblivion you just own everything in your path. in fo3 its kind of scary when a ghoul pops in your face because normally you use guns so you have to back up. In oblivion zombies sound like theyre constipated which kind of ruins the scare effect.....and you can just burn th a zombie with FIRE.

It's not supposed to be horror, so there shouldn't be much concentration on it. Certain areas should be extremely creepy - tombs, etc.

And your avatar is pretty darned mystical, ghoulsrpeople2.

Mikedzines: playing with the 6th House bells creeped me out the first time.

They should not aim for a scary game, but a game with the right atmosphere. Whenever I enter a burial mound in Solstheim Im cautious, always looking over my shoulder because there might be a draugr around. You get used to scary things after a few hours of gameplay, but atmosphere stays enjoyable.

I think it'd be neat if the parts (caves and baddies) that are supposed to scary or intimidating for the common folk, should be.. like you wouldn't want to just wander into some places.
But definitely should revolve around there. I think it should be implemented... Id kinda like the heart-racing type fear, like when you say, 'woah!' afterwards. lol. :biglaugh:

A good fear-induced instantaneous deuce would be even better.
Just don't tell anyone about it, if it happens. Ever.

not horror, but nasty stuff going on, and caves where you get a rush and are running your ass off away from some messed thing. also, id like vamps to be a tad less [censored], and actually a threat, and a more rare threat. in other words, more gritty and dark, but obviously also happy, sunny, and funny momements.

Scary ? That would be a nice change.

Though I am the kind of gamer who just starts to jawn if the game tries to scare me.

I'm not aware any part of the other Elder Scroll games ever scared me, though. Therefore I dont expect ESV to actually scare me, either.

I went with average. It is supposed to be an adventure game, not a horror game right?

Err its a roleplaying game, not an adventure ...

I wouldn't want it to be full-on Silent Hill scary, but I'd like some of the caves and dungeons to be creepier than they are in Oblivion. I'd like pitch black caves with strange noises coming from somewhere in the distance, so dark that a torch is absolutely necessary to see anything at all.

roleplaying could be adventure or horror, there are different types of roleplaying, for me oblivion was and adventure poleplayer

Very, very, very, unbelievably scary.

Our characters may be heroes, but we players are not. WE need to be scared. That will only give us a greater sense of how heroic our characters really are.

Making a game scary isn't about making the enemies look scary and then sending them after you in a dark room; no, that's why Doom 3 was so bad.

Making a game scary is about making fearsome enemies (like the Deathclaw), then putting the player in a position where the enemy can surprise them, get some hits off, and get them in a corner fighting for their lives against the red eyes in the darkness. A scary enemy can look scary, sure, but it needs to have the constant fear aspect. When you're caught flat footed the relentless assault of the enemy (like a berserking zombie) is what keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I dont want it to turn into some crazy survival horror game but i would like it to be alot more tense. Like when im exploring an old ruin and something ambushes me, i want it to scare me and make the fight more suspenseful and tense.

Somewhere between average and very. (voted average)

If used correctly, it can enhance the atmosphere quite a lot. But when you 'scarify' everything, it's a waste. I like scary, as long as it fit's within the game's atmosphere and story.
