How Should Bethesda Deal With The Skyrim Border?

Post » Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:09 am

I don't like the idea of natural borders. They did it in Fallout:New Vegas and it made the world feel boxed in.

I'd prefer something like Oblivion and Morrowind, kinda mixed or something.

But only if theres a pirate island out in all that open water.

I honestly don't mind invisible walls. As long as the world contained within them is rich, immersive, and entertaining- and most of the quests don't take me too near those walls- I don't see what the fuss is about. "Oh no, I can't go further because I'm playing a game." Then I turn around and I'm right back into the fun. Horrors! That second of running into a wall isn't gonna keep me from having fun.

Place encampments of soldiers of varying races at the border of their respective province. They'll warn you twice to turn back as you have no clearance to pass into the next province. The third time you attempt to cross over they can kill you on sight. Orcs and Bretons for High Rock, Redguards for Hammerfell, Imperials for Cyrodiil, and Dunmers for Morrowind.

Quoting myself there.

I'm in favor of the dense fog that mystically turns you around, it doesn't kill you and it doesn't break immersion, seems pretty good actually. It really didn't bother me that much in Oblivion, but in Fallout: New Vegas, it was a major pain in the ass. So yeah, dense fog/blizzard please.

How about instead of the border patrol, from my original idea, doesn't kill you. You are just incapacitated and there is a cutscene of you being ridden back to the nearest major town on the back of the patrol's horse. Not as immersion breaking.

Just use invisible walls. All these overcomplicated ideas would just piss people off in the end and probably wouldn't be fun. Invisible wall is a slight bit of weirdness and then your done with it.

they should have ever lasting forest, but while you are there, you get massed on by packs of wolves and bears and the odd insane nord.

I like the ever lasting forest idea, but how about this...
you keep walking and walking deeper into a dense forest, mountains, ect. but when you turn around you find that you have not gone that much past the boarder at all?
they had something like this in on of the Mario games for the 64, except with stairs. Now, if they could do it, then Beth has no reason not to be able to.

So, there should be an invisible wall in a deep forest, that makes you think your making progress but in reality your not?

A blizzard surrounds all sides of the borders. When you begin to exit the border, the blizzard becomes too strong and then returns you to the edge, pointing back towards the center of Skyrim.

Basically, like the Gerudo Desert in Ocarina of Time.

All these crazy ideas are gonna make a lot of people unhappy. Just have invisible barriers. Seriously, there's no other way to do it without it seeming ridiculous. They're really not a bigt problem. You only notice them if you reach the edge of the map.

I'd prefer Bethesda just use the invisible wall "Turn Back" thing from Oblivion or natural barriers as opposed to them wasting precious development time on some overly elaborate scene to make you turn back.

Yes, this will leave the lands around Skyrim for modders to work with new locations like Oblivion did.

I agree with this one. While I like the appeal of having some semi-realistic reason to turn back, I gotta say that invisible borders with a moddable option to turn off the borders is probably the best way to go.

That being said, I snickered at the cliffracers mob you when you reach the edge suggestion.

I like the avalanche idea. Or, as someone else said, I would be happy with endless forest filled with dangerous animals and insane Nords.

Assuming that the player is patronized by some deity, there could be roads going to the other provinces: However, when you are about to leave Skyrim the deity reveals itself to you and says something like "if you leave you will forfeit your destiny." The game presents you with a choice: Stay in Skyrim, or leave. If you leave, the game ends as your character traipses down the road into the unknown.

That's a great idea!

To the East: An immense cave system guarded by Monty Python's deadly rabbit.
To the North: Bridge of Death ending abruptly ---> you die.
To the West: "STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!" by Scotland Yard officers (chance to see guns in action).
To the South: The Champion of Cyrodill 'forgot' to close an Oblivion Gate and Mehrune whatever is just waiting for you.

This reminds me of GTA: San Andreas. If you drive away from the mainland, out into the ocean you can go forever. It looks like you keep going further but really you're not. It's weird but works.

But if we get levitation back, then shouldnt we be able to levitate past these mountains?

That's a problem to worry about if levitation actually is in the game, which we don't know yet. And it will need to be adressed for cities too, assuming the game uses the same walled cities in a seperate worldspace approach of Oblivion.

But really, I'm fine with invisible borders if that's the best Bethesda can do, so long as they're used only on the borders of the map (In other words, I do NOT want to see the game use invisible borders to keep players from reaching locations within the boundaries of the game through means other than a linear path the developers meant us to use, like New Vegas does.) the game needs to put the border somewhere, after all, since it can't have the whole Tamriel in it. The whole "endless ocean" thing worked well in Morrowind because the game took place on an island, so it would not look odd if there was nothing beyond the explorable area, but Cyrodiil couldn't have done that. While Bethesda could of course use natural borders, that only works if there's actually supposed to be such a thing there, if the map tells you that there's no mountains on the border between Cyrodiil and some other province, yet in the game, there are, its going to seem kind of strange. And the game just not letting me leave the explorable area at all didn't bother me, since I wouldn't want to do that anyway. There's no towns out there, no dungeons, no enemies to fight, nothing of interest, so why would I want to go there? If the game tells me "You can't go that way, turn back." when I'm trying to go beyond the explorable area of the game, I'd do just that. The only time I ever want to go out of the border of Cyrodiil in Oblivion is when I'm using mods that add things outside the in-game border, and when I'm doing that, deactivating the border is simple enough. Still, I suppose where mountains and other physical barriers would seem plausible, using them would at least feel a bit more natural than an invisible border blocking your progress, so I'd say try to put such borders where they belong, but if having real borders would just look out of place on some regions of the map, I would not object too much to invisible borders.

natural borders entombing you in skyrim is immersion breaking

a blizzard/storm/fog? around the entire border of skyrim is immersion breaking.

being attacked EVERY TIME you try to cross is immersion breaking, and getting killed by wolves when you're level gazillion is emmersion breaking.

faced with these barriers we would find ourselves thinking - this isnt right...

short of creating the entire world...would a please and thankyou sway you beth? invisible walls with a brief message is the LEAST immersion breaking. like others have said, you can't cross not because you 'physically can't', but because in your quest you don't need to. you can see the land beyond and it is beautiful, but you have no need to go there, and thus can't (obviously as game players we know that it is because they havent developed the land beyond for us to tread, but as characters, we know we technically could but *dont* because we needn't).

those of you who ask for these barriers, if implemented in the game, i bet you very same ones will be all like " whats with this never ending mountain? as if thats real beth!"

How about this: no barriers, but the Adoring Fan follows you for as long as you're outside the border. At lightning speed. And he's essential.

if you look at a Map, it will be mountians West, South. Ocean East, North. Remember-- Skyrim invaded Morrowind post collapse, their territory will include NW MW.
