How Should Bethesda Deal With The Skyrim Border?

Post » Fri Mar 19, 2010 8:56 pm

So how do you want to happen when reaching the border in TES:V? I ask cause many people disliked the invisible walls that where in oblivion.

Natural barriers. Having impassable mountains and bodies of water I think is the best.

Mountains on the East, West, and South, and the ocean to the North. Seems simple enough to me.

I'm in favor of the "dense fog rolls in, you pass out, wake up back within the game's borders" approach.

Totally against natural barriers, because there shouldn't ever be such a thing as an impassable barrier. You should be able to levitate or climb over anything in the game with the right skills. No invisible walls please...

But if we get levitation back, then shouldnt we be able to levitate past these mountains?

they should have ever lasting forest, but while you are there, you get massed on by packs of wolves and bears and the odd insane nord.

Difficult to come up with a plausible border, however, for the love of Septim, no magical borders. That's very lazy.

I dont mind if it was like oblivion. I know it is immersion breaking, but so is the "horde of evil wolves jump out and instantly kill you"

personally i think that the chance of encountering a pack of hungry wolves in a cold mountainous wilderness is highly plausible

I think they should just do mountains, and if someone tries to levitate over them or whatever then should come the "You cannot go this way" message. What else can they do? They can't make the mountains infinitely tall.

It would be strange if there were mountains that you can't get over. Where is the way into Skyrim then?

You just get the feeling that you have to turn back, in intervals.

"A blizzard begins to roll in and you freeze to death." Obviously worded better but you get the jist
Also if the sea's a border you can say "You swim for hours and begin to tire. you decide to turn back" To make that scanario more realistic you could change the time depend on your fatigue levels etc.

I don't see what's bad about the invisible walls. Sure, it's immersion breaking, and yes I'd prefer to see an alternative method to preventing the player accessing areas they shouldn't, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

Anyway, seeing as how the East, South and West have mountains, how about an avalanche? Or like Mackinnon10 said, a blizzard.

...but then surely people will complain if they get teleported back to within the game's boundaries.
