How do some people fail to understand why gaming is populer?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:54 am

I know lots of people in their 30's and 40's and beyond who video game, join WoW guilds, and so on & so forth. Including me.

Usually people (whatever their age or generation) don't understand simply because they prefer to spend their own free time doing something else. I don't understand why some people want to go wine-tasting or parachuting or backpacking every weekend, or why some people think such hobbies might somehow be more cosmically "worthwhile" than gaming, <_< but each their own.

It's not a generational difference, it's just a plain ol' different-interests social-fear intolerance and there are always things like that around.

Glenn Beck is svck a moron. Seriously I'd beat him if I saw him right now :swear:

He is seriously a...meanie. I don't want to graphically describe him, because it'll get ugly.

Lol @ Glenn Beck, at first I thought he had a point but those were overshadowed by his usual stupidity, what a dike. Apparently having a wife, house and good job makes you a loser.

It may be related to how some people fail to understand that after a comma, you put a space.

As the old saying goes, opinions are like armpits. Everyone has them and most of them stink!

Personally, I think most video games help with just blowing off steam (unless it's Megaman or Call of Duty), while others (Morrowind) can help flex the imagination with some people. The thing is you just have to be careful and moderate your time with them (just like anything else) otherwise you might spend all your time on a game and less on important stuff.

If I think 'people who agree with the new stuff the youth came up with', I naturally start with 'people who call on radio talk shows', of course.

People don't understand why gaming is popular because most haven't given it a real try. I think, like books, there is a game genre out there to suit everyone. It doesn't help though that some games really do svck.

OP, they don't misunderstand, they understand perfectly, they just don't agree with some people who are part of gaming community. frankly, they'd love to talk to people like you, people who want to understand them. but you are talking to us, fellow gamers, not them. and gamers can't always help you understand non-gamers. the point is, if you are to understand them, then you need to talk to them, or wait until we as community with open mind talk to them, understanding that they have opinions different from ours and are entitled to them as much as we are to ours, and get the answers you want.

So,last night here on U.K talk radio, one of the topics, was what's the appeal of games, especialy among advlts ?

Surely with games as big, open and engaging as they are these days,it's easy to see why so many like it? And yet callers came out with such things as ''They need to grow up,games are for kids, etc'', The host even said ''Why do people want to play a army guy blowing up villiges with woman and families'' (I missed that game).

So,what is this mentality about, have you encounterrd such views?

Discuss.

I think one reason is some people consiter gaming is more of a geek or nerdy fad, just as there are people that live, breath and consiter sports like Football (NFL and AFC Football), Baseball, Soccer and maybe Tennis and NASCAR the main life blood of society. BTW I do love watching Nascar when there's nothing on TV :D.

Hard to say really. Some people are just of a different generation, in which games are considered vast wastes of time and generally for those without real things to do. Of course, I find most "sports" to fall under that category as all of them are insanely boring to me. I've tried on multiple occasions to sit through a football/baseball/basketball game on TV, and almost always end up changing the channel or falling asleep. I get that it's the opiate of the masses but wow... And as far as watching sports live, it's all the boredom except you have to stand in line for everything. What fun!

Anyway, it boils down to personal preference.

They need a back hand slap across the face for having their heads so far stuck up their...ahem...to notice an alarming multitude of the population playing games.

But in a few generations(1 or 2) now videogames will be viewed as just another form of media by mostly everyone. At least I believe so.

Coming from/growing up in the 2nd generation of video gamers(80's, first was more or less in the 70's, though there were games before then, it wasn't really a "thing" yet), I can safely say I agree with your statement. Compared to how gamers were treated when I was growing up, to how they are viewed now, it's a massive turn-around.

A lot of people have ill-informed opinions about activities they don't partake in or enjoy.

For example, remember the thread about how professional athletes get paid too much here? How do you think a a really devoted professional sports fan would feel about the people here saying that their favourite athletes that bring them so much joy don't deserve their wealth and success?

I'm not condoning what those radio announcers did, I'm just saying that they did it out of ignorance, not malice. How would you like to be hated for doing something out of ignorance?

Like people have said many times, those who are making these statements are not well informed on what video games are today.

Even on this very forum there have been threads questioning why non-kids are playing video games

Or even making video games.

Some people just like to hate on gamers :( Like my neighbor saw me with my 3DS and was like "aren't you 38? Too old for games" and he giggled and left, yeah giggled lol I found it odd considering he was nearly my age and still living with his parents

Those neighbors are strange people anyway, his sister cried to come home on her honeymoon

I believe it was for ratings. They know alot of advlts are gamers know, they are just trying to provoke people into the show for ratings.

The only person I have encountered with this view is my Grandma.

+1
I hate the constant "your going to grow up and kill people!"

Yep and I'm also going to become an augmented super-soldier and save humanity from a collective of alien races.

most of those people probably don't play games, they don't have kids who play video games, or they think of games like tetris. They also have some really weird idea of what games like gta are like. I veiw gaming kinda like a hobby, i think the news people just get want something to rant about.

Most games anymore are aimed at teen agers to advlts anyways

my favorite part is when they say that people play to many video games today and it just rots their brain.............they then sit down and proceed to watch TV all evening for several hours. :teehee:

i got back at some relatives who used to say that all the time. i got a hold of their camcorder and then while they sat and watched tv i set it up and started recording them. i got a really nice side/frontal view of their faces in particular their vapid looking eyes as they proceed to watch 4 hours of TV straight. its really strange if you actually watch people watching TV. its like they turn off their brains and just stare into empty space. they got a little upset after i showed them the recording but i never ever let them forget about it...........they shut up after that. :)
