How stable is your modded game?

When you MUD the CRAP out of Oblivion, is it expected to, once in a while, to run into a "the game has stopped working" error or do you strive to have a completely stable game?

But in two occasions I have experienced said error whilst resting and have only played for 24 in-game days. Is that to be expected?

I have found the formula for crashing: it′s loading the game when I die.



No really, I only crash - randomly - if play a "loaded game". If I always close the game, and then load, I never have those random crashes.

It doesn′t even supprise me - I have witnessed many time during modding and testing how Oblivion fails to clear all old data from scripts when you load the game. And that′s only something I can SEE and WITNESS - god knows how much data never gets reset. So yeah - my new religion is called "never load without quitting".

Gives me 100% stable game - it′s a nice religion, you should join it. :)

I definitely strive for a stable game. My only issue is overload CTDs, which I get if playing too long sessions. This is not helped by me having an old PC with only 1 GB RAM with FCOM and lots of other mods running, but it's basically an issue with the Gamebryo engine which just continues to eat memory when you're playing.

Your load order looks good, except that you should update http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1116296-relz-martsmonstermod37b3-public-release-3-relz/page__view__findpost__p__16393704. Might consider skipping Mart's Monster Mod - Additional Enemy NPC Vars.esp [Version 3.7b3p3] for the time being as well - some have performance issues with it.

Correct. It happens to me very often. I managed to reduce the in-game crashes with the guide "http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1119325-50steps-to-stable-fcom/page__p__16452602__hl__steps+free+fcom+__fromsearch__1#entry16452602"... Even if I don't run FCOM :)

You mean quit the game or quit on the main menu, then reload?

Also,
Will your "Never die" mod solve this issue? (A bit overkilling for young characters, though)

I have 0 crashes when loading again while in game this is caused by deleted refs that oblivion references when loading in game for some reason use tes4edit undelete refs and it should fix this
Also if any1 loads a save with dr6 initialized then a save without it initialized will cause the dr5 pop up menu regardless of having installed it just for reference

It's just a fact of Oblivion that a heavily modded game is going to crash. I get a crash every 30 minutes or so. I have roughly 158 mods this play-though. I've read every "prevent crashes" thread and nothing helps me.

Very stable till Oblivion eats up the RAM, then kaput. Generally 2-4 hours, depending on cell transitions. I run all the hires stuff, RAEVWD, FCOM, Crowded Roads, blah blah, so it's expected.

As mentioned by Skycaptain, if I die, I fully quit the game and restart Oblivion, loading from in the game is a cluster[censored] waiting to happen. Though I do use Never Die, so I only really die if I die after I die.

Since I never tried "Never Die", I'd really like to know if it is an overkill for young players running OOO+MMM... and if it conflicts with Shivering Isles' resurrection system.
But this is another story.

Now the conclusions are:
- Follow the steps to make your game stable, even if you do not run FCOM;
- If you die, do not reload, but quit Oblivion, then run it again and load (I'd say that it is a way to get rid of the annoying message "Oblivion has stopped working", but actually you quit and run again in both ways, wether you like it or not :). If it prevents crashing in the future, it is a good "fix" though);
- Try not stressing your PC too much with too much mods (It's really difficult to follow this rule, then I expect a lot of CTDs in the near future ;));
- The "Crash every 20-40 minutes is a known issue and it depends on Oblivion engine which eats RAM.

Now I don't remember if Wrye Bash reports Harvest Flora 3.0.1 as 3.0.0 or not. If not you should consider to update Harvest Flora to the latest, which fixes a critical bug (I don't know what bug, but I've been told it's critical).

The Harvest [Flora] bug applies to users of OOO (which I know there are quite a few out there), which was packaged with 3.0.0 and never updated for the 3.0.1 update, so just remember not to use the OOO internal version of Harvest [Flora] and you'll be fine.

How do I prevent crashes? Well, for one, reloading in game is out for me, as the game not only doesn't fully refresh the data if you reload while the game is running, but it also causes an engine bug where persistent references previously disabled can be re-enabled and a whole lot of other problems. Second, I loaded up my load order very tediously one mod at a time to prevent my game suffering from "multi-mod-activation syndrome," I Bash everything I can, and BAIN install every mod I download. In short, having total control over my mods is a very effective step.

That and being wise about how far I push the engine. I only use about half of RAEVWD, for example, and few hi-res texture replacers (Bomret's Normal Maps do a fine job of making lower res textures look great).

It's also helpful to understand your computer, what its limitations are, and what could be improved, in case you run across a problem that's hardware related.

No other crashes than the inevidable memory-crunch after 1,5 to 3 hours of playtime. But that's okay, because I save often.

I'm using OBGE, QTP3, RAEVWD, All Natural, Francesco's and many other large'ish mods.

Never really had a heavy mod load order, currently its around 138 (not counting all the texture replacers with bain installers), highest we have had is around the 190 mark, and using T.I.E as our overhaul of choice instead of OOO etc... Using FastExit2 which stops the only consistent crashes we used to have (apart from the odd installation mistake or forgetting a clean save routine when updating certain mods) - On both the laptop and desktop we do not have ctds', longest play time usually occurs with one of the family members at the weekend for between 2 to 4 hour periods. And using a combination of Oblivion Stutter Remover and Streamline to purge Cell Buffers and do streamsaves, tailored for each machine... Very stable.

Bashed patch imports and bossing the load order obviously goes a long way to achieving that stability too.

Oblivion, especially if heavily modded, is a high maintenance game. It's important to have the drive defragged, keep the registry clean and avoid having other processes running in the background (via a clean boot or Game Booster etc.).

Also, turn off autosave on travel/wait/rest.

The game isn't entirely stable on it's own, it can sometimes crash even if you don't use any mods. As long as it's not happening every few minutes and is fairly sporadic I really wouldn't worry about it. Occasional crashing is just something you have to live with when playing a Bethesda game, the Gamebryo engine can be kind of finicky and temperamental. A 24 day run is not a bad session, a crash after that period of time is nothing to be concerned about. If it were to happen every 5 minutes or so then you'd be having a problem, but what you're experiencing seems perfectly normal for the game.

You speak the truth, dude. Oblivion is going to crash. I have never ran a game session that didn't crash save when I wasn't running any mods at all. Back when the game first came out and I was running pure vanilla.

I used to have crashes every 20-30 minutes when I had FCOM running. I could never figure out why, though it was an installation issue as whenever the game crashed I was able to check memory usage, which was well under the 1.8 gig mark.

Since then I stripped down my overhauls down and swapped around my city mods a bit to get this (the only graphics enhancers I'm running is REAVWD because I'm stuck on a paltry GT 220)

And the game is a hell of a lot more stable. I still however get crashes in northern Elsweyr generally within about ten minutes of being within the province. I'm not sure whether its got to do with all the mismatched LOD files that wrye bash registers from the mod or the WAC patch, but as everything else seems fairly stable, so I'm fairly satisfied.

The best "tweak" for performance and stability I've ever done was buy a new hard drive, install windows, oblivion, bash obmm etc and nothing else!
Honestly, if I don't go online, I don't need anti-virus and firewall software and stuff eating away at my memory.

I only experience ctd's when running around outside, so Streamline's purge system and recently the OSR WIP update 4.1.4 have greatly improved stability in this area.
Couple with drastically reducing the ini settings of uGridsToLoad and uTreeToLoad allows me to run a reduced RAEVWD too.

I've also recenty been running all my meshes (vanilla and mod added) through the latest PyFFI, which really helps due to reduced mesh loading

I don't want to brag, but I have about 80 plugins installed now including FCOM, and since the last total reinstall about 2 weeks ago, I never get a random CTD anymore. I pyffied a lot of the meshes (basically all), if necessary unpack the BSA, pyffie and repack again. I think this helps a lot, together with Streamline purge function and OSR. I also defrag my HD often. And shut down unnecessary background programs of course, like antivirus, internet browser and so on.

Also I have the distinct impression it helps if I boot up the PC afresh and immediately start the game, not having done anything before that (other than starting FRAPS).

At this point I have not installed CM Partners. In my old install I had it, and while I did all the good things I'm doing with the new install already back then, I would occasionally crash. I have a suspicion that CM Partners may be at least partially to blame for those. However I do not want blame it on CM entirely, OK!! Even then I could have sessions well longer than 2 hours straight, so not that bad. Now it's just flawless at the moment. :shrug:

I have witnessed many time during modding and testing how Oblivion fails to clear all old data from scripts when you load the game. And that′s only something I can SEE and WITNESS - god knows how much data never gets reset. So yeah - my new religion is called "never load without quitting".

This fits well into my theory (well practice actually) of making a fresh boot-up of the PC before commencing the gaming session.

When you MOD ;) the CRAP out of Oblivion, is it expected to, once in a while, to run into a "the game has stopped working" error or do you strive to have a completely stable game?

I don't strive for anything much, except what is awesome. As it so happens, the game remains perfectly stable, oddly enough. :shrug:

Over 300 mods, currently... not counting various graphics enhancements, etc. :rock:

Since I never tried "Never Die", I'd really like to know if it is an overkill for young players running OOO+MMM... and if it conflicts with Shivering Isles' resurrection system.
But this is another story.


I don't think it conflicts with the SI system at all, at least not that I am aware of, but it can be rough at low levels with OOO and MMM in Oblivion Gates. You can disable that feature in the .ini though, it'll just pop you into the last exterior cell, or nearest inn or something (I forget, I use 100% to go to Oblvion on death). If you decide to use the Oblivion option early on, you can disable equipment loss in the .ini, as your spells alone probably aren't going to be enough to get you through the Deadlands if you lose a critical weapon or something.

It's very configurable, and pretty straightforward.

Also, if you decide to use it, it doesn't actually start to work until you get to Weynon Priory (it's disabled until the main quest stage where you get the Ive reached Weynon Priory message). So if it's a new character, high tail it over there.

The HF bug was Harrada roots, they'd crash the game because of some animation.

I have found the formula for crashing: it′s loading the game when I die.



I've always lived by this aswell, but never realized it could help prevent scripting errors too. I just did it since I always figured it was as good a time as any to restart the game. Did a quick test to check out possible scripting errors that can occur, and loaded up a game, ran around for a little bit, quit to main menu and started a new game. Opened the console and it was spammed with scripting errors. Tried it twice more (with restarting the game inbetween) and same thing happened both times. When I tried just loading an old save after killing myself I didn't get them however but that doesn't mean it can't happen. So definitely restarting the game seems to help stability. :)

Generally speaking Oblivion is really hit and miss for me. It used to be stable until recently. Now I get crashes around the Imperial Isle bridge all the time... perhaps its time to make a new character and see if the error persists in that area.

Have UFCOM, Better Cities and a whole bunch of other stuff loaded. Runs very stable. Get a lot of crashes on saving though.

I don't buy this one at all. Blade of Mercy insists on this advice in his 50 steps guide, but his only justification is anecdotal. And I personally have activated and deactivated as many as 50 mods at a time without crashing as a result. There just doesn't seem to be any rationality for the process. It sounds like superstition.

Cleaning dirty mods and quitting the game entirely between reloads are the two steps I have taken that have directly affected the stability of the game. I rarely crash at all.

I always played FCOM and would crash once every 1-2 hours. more often in exterior, few in interiors. Recently I switched to MMM and Frans or MMM OOO TIE and ROM. In these games (80 hours of playing with 10 hour game sessions) I had a total of 3 crashes when going to sleep. I suspect streamline but maybe something else. I did have a freeze where I could not move forward or backward. Cleared that by starting a new game, saving, loading current save and that fixed it. I traced that issue to TIE in my load order (trying TIE with ROM, expect an issue here and there).

My current game is MMM and Frans and in 24 hours do not have a CTD or problem with three 8 hour sessions. I stop here and there to add a mod or texture or tweak the ini files for mods and OB.

I do not follow the 50 steps, game worked fine without it, but that is not to say that for some that is the best way. I would prefert o add mods in chunks and upgrade game than starting by activating an esp at a time. But that is just for me.
