How do I start up Daggerfall?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 3:32 pm

Ok, so I've installed Daggerfall and followed all the instructions precisely from the pinned thread about how to run past games. So my problem is what icon do I click on to run it? Thanks!

You will have to make a shortcut yourself.

What type of shortcut? Is there some way to get Daggerfall to run on Vista without having to bootup Dosbox and type all that stuff in?

You will have to make a shortcut yourself.

What do you mean by this? I'm quite confused.

you can have dosbox auto-run the code when it launches (look at the final 'optional' steps in the pinned stuff).

Then you just make a shortcut to dosbox to run the game, re-name it, give it the daggerfall icon and your all done with a good looking shortcut.

Else, Yes, you will need to type it in every time you want to play.

Heres how to do it, from the pinned threads, with the newest dosbox there is no longer a config file in the install folder. You can open it through the link in the start menu.
Now open the dosbox.conf file which is where you installed DOSBox and do the following changes:

Then go to the bottom where it says "# Lines in this section will be run at startup." and add the following lines:
[What you have to put in to start the game]

Save the config file as Daggerfall.conf and you're done with that.

Sweet, but, what's the Daggerfall icon? did it come with the installation and I didn't notice? Also, not to hijack the topic, so a PM of this question's answer would be appreciated: I made Dosbox boot Daggerfall on it's own, but now when I play it in windowed mode, I can't move the mouse icon. This didn't start until after I put in a couple of the addons from that topic, I hope I haven't messed my file up for good. The mouse still works when I make the game fullscreen, but I would like to be able to play windowed...

It worked, thanks! Now, about the Daggerfall Icon...

Also, many apologies for hi-jacking the topic! :embarrass:

its found in the daggerfall install directory, its just called DAGGER, you may have mistaken it for an application. Its the only DAGGER file with a non-generic icon.

Someone should remake that icon with a more realistic, ahem...color palette. Reminds me of running Windows 95 in 16-bit color.

Everytime I try to run the self created Daggerfall shortcut (dosbox shortcut with a daggerfall icon), the dosbox window keeps on closing. Please help :(

I've edited the .conf file with these changes:
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
MOUNT C GAMES
C:
CD DAGGER
FALL.EXE Z.CFG

I don't understand why it's not working. Help is greatly appreciated

Get a GUI front end like D-Fend Reloaded. It allows you to setup profiles with mouse clicks and name them, then just double click on that name within the program to start it.I have about 40 DOS games on my PC, so I just have a shortcut to D-Fend on my desktop, double click to open it, then double click on which ofthe 40 games I want to play and D-Fend just starts up DOSBox as I set it in the D-Fend profile. It makes tweaking or trying new things a lot easier too. The DOSBox way isto keep going into the conf file to manually change it, which is a bind!

Many sites about old games have a sticky on Page One 'How to use DOSBox'. Seldom there is a sticky for these GUI front ends, and I don't know why. After all, how many of us would want to go back to the DOS operating system? So why not a 'Windows front-end' for DOSBox? What so bad about them that they never get recommended?
