How strong should dragons be ?

I personally think dragons should be very strong, so strong that if I don′t make a fighting focused character I will never be able to take down a dragon, not even on level 50+ and if I make a tough-as-nail fighter or a super mage or a rogue of great speed and dirty fighting (hey I gotta make thief based characters be able to sound strong somehow) I should only be able to take down a dragon when I′m hitting level 40+ or so, 50+ may be a bit too late in my opinion but that′s just me thinking from a development point of view, since you′re supposedly going to level really slow from that level and forward.

So assuming you make a very strong and battle hardened fighter, at what level do you think you should be able to take down the lowliest of dragons ? And do you think non-fighters should be able to take down a dragon ?

I think this will be very hard to judge given that we have Dragon Shouts - and no one knows how strong or weak those will be. In fighting dragons, a weak player with no equipment may be able to best a dragon if they have high-level dragon shouts.

I "assume" they will be among the strongest of enemies, but we'll see.

A tailor may not have made the trip up High Hrothgar and may not have learned any dragon shouts, and someone naked may even be more tough-as-nails than someone in full armor... just imagine a huge naked nord with a large mace smashing yeti and throwing mammoths taking the trip to High Hrothgar to learn to shout like a man!

That′s what I mean, I take it for granted that only "figther" type character will learn dragon shouts, and mages and such scholars are also what I take as a fighter, so basically learning dragon shouts is kinda like learning a martial art.

I think the story necessitates that you must fight them not too far down the path of the story. I chose 11-20 for being able to fight the weaker dragons. They have said dragons will not be uncommon, that there are many dragon words to collect, and that you fight dragons to get these words. I'm hoping that not every single dragon is evil and that you have to slaughter them all, but I can't imagine dragon fighting only being a late game thing if you need to collect words for shouts.

I don't think it will be possible to level too far with only non-fighter skills. I will be surprised if there is such a route.

I'm torn here. On one hand, dragons need to be strong enough to present a challenge (and if they are attacking cities, fear for your life if you are in the city when it gets attacked). In this case, weaker dragons should be able to be slain levels 21-30, with dragons increasing in power from there. On the other hand, from a developers point of view, something so integrated with the main story (dragon shouts, etc) will need to be able to be tackled at any level the player wants to take it on. In this case, I think that dragons will be scaled to the player, so that they always are more powerful then you, but you can always take them down.

Personally, I think the level scaling idea is best, but only if they bottom the lowest level a dragon can be. So the first dragon you find will always be level, say, 20, regardless of if you are level 1 or level 10. When you go in at level 15, it should spawn as a level 25. If your level 40, it should be 50, etc. That way, it will be impossible for a greenhorn recruit to take on a dragon (if this were possible, then why are dragons still a problem? Just send the entire guard training school after 'em and they'll be gone in a week) but it will also make the main story quests flexible

Well, from a RP point of view, I wouldn't even try to challenge a dragon as a baker or merchant. If traveling as a merchant I would hire some bodyguards to defend me from those threats. :sweat:
I think it would make sense to have high fighter skills and perks to be able to kill a dragon.

But I suspect that killing a dragon won't be so hard in the game itself if you're around level 20-ish.

I would like it that you have to be around level 40-50 before you can even think of taking on a Dragon. Make them really terror inducing creatures of might and not scaly cliff racers.

Imagine having to run and find somewhere to hide when one appears..i can imagine the adrenaline that would be pumping, knowing this creature will tear you apart easily..

I really hope you can`t kill them at low levels as this would really detract from the game big style. Mages or Archer shouldn`t be able to either, whether dodging behind boulders or trees and firing bows/spells etc. These are creatures that shouldn`t be level scaled with the character at all, just set them at a real badass high level..

I believe that dragons and dragon combat will rely on a plot-centered leveling system and have nothing to do with the game's actual statistics and leveling (in regards to magic, stealth and combat skills).

The dragon shouts have been confirmed as the only way a player can hope to deal with one of these creatures, and the dragon shouts will be revealed through quest-line progression. This has little to do with combat/magic/stealth skills, aside from what skills you practice/perfect as you make your way through the storyline. What was Martin Septim's strength stat when he entered battle with Mehrunes Dagon? Did he have sufficient skill in destruction, heavy armor, or blade to provide a worthy adversary? No, he had a system of magic separate from the player's leveling system. It was plot-driven, just like the quest to uncover the dragon shouts will be in Skyrim.

On their own, dragons would be level 99+ creatures that decimate entire towns and give no mind to solitary adventurers. With the convenient kick from a dragon shout, they don't seem much tougher to take down in single combat than an average Ogre! That's my assumption of what will happen, anyway. It's a great way to keep dragon combat in line with the story and not have a character be too high or low level for the main quest when they are ready to start it.

Dragons should be incredible dangerous. Perhaps at top level you might be able to slay one. But you need to come prepared! That means having the right gear(fire resistance, etc). And maybe fire a poisoned arrow at it to weaken it a bit.

Also if any low levels try any cheap game tactics(like hiding in a narrow place between some rocks), they will be incinerated by the dragon's breath :flamethrower: :flamed:

I would think that it should be next to impossible for a solo character to kill one. You should have to rely on assistance, such as killing one during its assault on a town, even with the addition of Dragon Shouts.

Even at level 50, I don't see much of a way for a single individual to kill a fully grown dragon without a great deal of luck or a conveniently placed ballista.

Of course, my mental image of a Dragon is much more powerful than that seen in most fantasy settings.

I'd prefer there to be a pretty lengthy period of progression leading up to the point where we can actually stand up to a healthy full-grown dragon, alone. Which isn't to say we can't technically be a dragonslayer before we're strong enough to do that. I suspect that relatively early in the game we'll be given the opportunity to survive, rather than defeat a dragon encounter, and/or an opportunity to slay a dragon as a result of circumstances and not high character level - perhaps a trapped, wounded or dying dragon who we simply finish off. A soul is a soul...

Intentionally playing a weak/noncombatant character should have exactly the result we might expect; "boss" enemies like dragons wiping the floor with us.

It would make sence if our first dragon we slew would be injured and partly crippled when we face it. Giving us our first shout almost freely already at level 3.

But they should be very easy to defeat, like bear level strong.
I want to be able to beat Dragons while eating MacCasual burgers.

Yeah definitely! This is where i hope the Dragon ai is going to be really good. I hope they do use shouts and dragon flame at the right tactical moments.

That′s a pretty good point, but if we end up having to face them ourselves I′d say levels 41-50 would be best level range to start fighting dragons, but if possible I′d like something like you suggest.

I'm sure there will be different dragons that you can fight at different levels. So a weaker dragon you could take down around level ten or so and as you get stronger, different types of dragon will appear that are also stronger. I just hope they get more intimidating the stronger they are, not just get a health and damage boost.

I don't like level/leveling being a huge indicator on my gameplay. If Dragons will be hunted and killed, it is better to be a tactical situation.

Of course the reverse is true as well; if a dragonslaying hero offers you some bread he's baked, it's wise to politely refuse.
