How am I supposed to level heavy armor?

It seems to never level because, naturally, I block! So am I supposed to let people hit me while wearing heavy armor?

I suppose so. Why not level up Two-Handed while you're at it? It would work out that way I suppose.

Either let weaker enemies hit you or get trained up!

yes. heavy armor only levels as you get hit, essentially utilizing the armor. find a weak enemy and just him unload on you.

With your back towards some bad guys, and level your restoration at the same time. =) Even if you're not perking magic constellations, doesn't hurt to have a few rudimentary resto spells at your disposal, and this seems to me to be an easy way to level armor skills as well as resto skills. I'll probably give it a shot.

EDIT: Bethy beat me to it!

There are two types of armor, Light and Heavy. There are two types of armor skills, Light and Heavy. There are two types of shields, Light and Heavy. Figure it out.

As far as I know, shields don't level up heavy armor!

Now that I think about it, this doesn't make sense to me. Using heavy armor doesn't necessarily mean getting hit in it. To me, that is the armor's job. Your job, and skill, is to know how movement limitations, weight distribution, and personal stamina will affect what you can and cannot do.

But yeah, back on topic, just let something weak hit you while you heal yourself.

Quit using your shield, or go pay someone who can train you in that area (the lazy but super quick way of leveling a skill).

If you're not letting yourself get hit, then why bother leveling it? It should level passively every now and then as you miss a block here and there, no need to stand in front of a mob getting hit like an idiot to level something you're not really using.

Heck, if you manage to block everything you might as well be fighting naked.

Don't understand the near complete aversion of using skill trainers in TES games. It's not like money is hard to come by after level 15.

I don't understand your response, did you intend it to be directed at the original poster?

It's not realistic. Letting a bandit hit you while you stand still for 4 hours is.

I just run into dungeons with weak bandits and let them punch me while I heal with Fast Healing. Then proceed to one shot them with my axe.

This was always my thought, playing a sneaking archer, however after getting my face bashed in enough times I started wishing I leveled SOME type of armor. =) I plan on leveling armor (well, everything) to 100, armor for those off chances that someone or thing/group catches me off guard and I get hit more than I was planning.

I've had this problem in all TES games to be honest, playing a stealthy character - once your sneak skill is good enough nothing sees you coming. let alone hits you and increases your armour skill!

Either roleplay it and find a trainer, or take the cheesy route and find a weak enemy (skeever or something, but make sure you have a cure disease potion in case it infects you with anything) and let it hit you for while.

A persons natural reaction is to block a blow..what the game is asking you to do is something completely unnatural, and that is to recieve a blow unhindered and without defending yourself.

A friend of mine used to use this mechanic in Morrowind..He'd go and find a mudcrab and just let it beat on him..then right before it would kill him he would slay it with one hit.

Though i believe your shield type still counts towards your armor level when hit(just like previous games).

I use 2 handed weapons, so I never realy block. Its too slow and does damage, and yet my heavy armour skill is still in the low 30s and im lvl 20. Somethings not right here. Then again I dont get hit too often as my Axe usually kills them in 1 or 2 hits.

I'm not sure of the mechanics, but I think if you block a damage, the rest of the damage that goes through isn't mitigated by your armor. So it's either block, or heavy armor. But I'm not sure on this.

Look, the point is it is ridiculous to stand in front of an enemy for 1 hour letting it hit you so you can get skill points. That's called broken mechanics.

I'll probably just start using skill trainers. Don't they cause you to level up though?

Again, if you are always blocking, your block skill is more important than your heavy armor skill. If you want to level your heavy armor the "normal way", then fight enemies without your shield from now on.

It's like my sneak skill. I don't try to sneak in houses to power level it. I level it as I play the game and do dungeons. It's at 93 or so now, all from sneaking enemies and doing sneak attacks.
