How do I?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:05 am

I just installed Fallout 2 on my computer, and I have windows Vista. I have a problem though, since when I try to start the game it says that I need at least 20.0 mb free disc space. However I got closer to 30 000 mb free disc space? What am I supposed to do to get around this?

Empty your recycle bin!

Anyway, from NMA:

Insufficient Disk Space Error
------------------
When you get that message it's either:
A. You are really running low on diskspace and should free up some, or
B. Your config files misguide you.

The following solution is for the latter and was proven to work for both FO1 and FO2.

In your Fallout directory find the fallout.cfg file and open it with Notepad. Note: Your file may look slightly different from the one listed below.
[system] <-----look under this paragraph
art_cache_size=130
cdlock=C:\Programs\mIRC\download\cdlock.dat
color_cycling=1
critter_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
cycle_speed_factor=1
executable=game
free_space=20480

etc.
Change the last value to 0 (zero) instead of 20480.

My value was 520, and I changed it to 0. I got a bit closer, because now the screen said in Fallout style "Please stand by" then it crashed back to desktop. It all took about 2 seconds. :P

Do you have the game fully patched?

Did it specify the problem?

Try setting your compatability mode. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-compatibility-mode/

Patches can be found http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=16. Get the official 1.02 patch first if you haven't got it already, then I'd recommend installing killap's unofficial patch as well.

Hey, thanks. I had the same issue when I last tried playing FO2 and just gave up. Now I know how to fix it.

Didn't work for me though. I suppose Vista 64 on a 64computer with 4gb RAM and other (otherwise cool) stuff is a bit too much for this game to handle. :(
