How to..

Post » Tue Aug 24, 2010 7:38 am

It takes some practice, when I started playing I was lucky if I could pick an easy lock ._.

Once you find out how it is done, it is not that hard at all. Or you could just use alteration.

And yes, even though I know how to do it, it is still tedious and boring <_<

I dont know about anyone else, but I find lockpicking extremely easy in this game. I can open a very-hard lock with maybe 1 or 2 picks breaking (level does not matter at all, I can do it at lvl 1)

Same here. It's all about the sound and the speed of movement of the tumbler for me. I just started a new game and can pick very hard locks from the get-go.

I found 3 chests sitting in the mountains all by themselves, but since I'm not thief and the locks were Hard and Very Hard, I couldn't pick them. I had my weapon equipped so I got a note saying I couldn't pick or bash while it was engaged, so my question is: How do I bash a chest when I can't pick it? Do I just keep whacking at it with a sword, or is there a specific command for bashing?

Are you possibly at Pale Pass? If you are, and this is moved to the CHS section, I could give you more info.

I found a book in a dungeon once that described a theif who used a torch to make the metal in the lock softer so the tumbler springs would be easier to manage. It just sounded like story-telling to me but I fingured I'd ask anyway. Does it help to have a torch equiped when picking a lock?

No. I too tried to use a torch on my first character when lockpicking. I've found no difference.

Yes, it's up by that Pale Pass area. There were some imps guarding three chests sitting right next to each other between some big rocks on the mountain side.

I need a lesson then, cause I have no patience for flippin lock picking and go through 3-4 on an easy lock and don't even bother with average+ anymore.

You have to have a bit of patience. That's number one. As you push each tumbler up with the lockpick, you have to pay attention the speed they travel at. Sometimes they'll go up quickly and immediately fall back. Other times, they'll raise a bit slower. When the tumbler travels at its slowest speed, you have to press X (or whatever your action button is) when the tumbler is at its highest point.

Usually, I press this button slightly after the tumbler reaches top position. If you get it at the right moment, the tumbler will stay in the upward position. Then you move to the next tumbler and perform the same actions.

But if you're roleplaying a character that isn't skilled with lockpicking, all of this kinda defeats the purpose. I've got a couple chars now who aren't supposed to be lockpickers. So whenever they try to pick a lock, I'll use the Auto function, which works sometimes well and sometimes not...depends on the character. Characters with a higher Luck rating will have an easier time.

Well, move this to the spoilers section, or PM me. There's a solution...

honestly, i find the minigame tedious. actually, O does a very bad job at all miniquest.

Have never learned it, prefer auto, the persuasion minigame is far better and I use it

I like all the mini-games. It makes it more realistic that you have to do it manually and if you're a natural you can do it more easily.

I tried a little experiment last night. I started with a character that had level 12 security and tried to pick a hard difficulty lock. Naturaly it was impossible (I'm not as gifted as some of you other posters <_< ) Then I used the console to force my security to level 100 and tried again and it was easy. The higher your security level, the slower the tumblers move when you tap them. At level 100 a hard lock's tumblers moved at the same speed as a very easy lock. I could open those all day. I wouldn't know how it would work with OOO though. So for those who, like me have difficulty with it: start high and practice, practice, practice!

Scarie, if u do not mind, creating a Restoration spell increase Security 100 / 1 sec takes care of any locks u pick. And u still get to increase security skill (if slower i dont know).

I like all the mini-games.

I love the lockpicking minigame. I think it's vastly superior to lockpicking in Morrowind.

I dislike the persuation minigame though. Unlike the lockpicking minigame, which imitates real-life lockpicking to some degree, the persuation minigame does not imitate the experience of having a real-life conversation. Watching timers and clicking the same four pie shapes over and over is more like playing a game at a carnival booth than having a conversation. I feel as though I am my character when I do the lockpicking minigame; I feel as though I am merely a gamer watching a computer monitor when I do the persuasion minigame.
