How to take down your dragon

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:42 pm

So I've been wondering how best to take down a dragon - I have to admit i'm a pretty lousy shot with a bow - usually i have to wait until my target is stationary and then unleash my shot - but from the preview it looks like these dragons come in fast and low and are happy to get up close and personal - so I'm unsure if I can take them out from range - am wondering about the whole run up with a sword thing and poke it as my first character is likely to be a Breton Mage - I doubt fireballs are much good so was wondering what the options might be for spell combos - something to slow it down first maybe a burden or a damage speed?

How are you planning to take down your first dragon?

if i remember correctly there'll be a dragon-shout to slow time but that might be too late to get in some cases

another thing i believe is that frost magic slows enemies down or something like that
cant remember where i heard it though

Fire primarily damages health.
Frost primarily damages fatigue.
Shock primarily damages magika.

I feel like bethesda will balance dragon fights.

I am going in with the longsword and shield but the arrows are a good back up!

I'm sure that dragons can be damaged by the same means normal enemies can, so magic, melee or archery should all work. They might have specific resistences, of course, I'm sure they have pretty high armor and may have some elemental resistences, but I can't see Bethesda counting out any character type (Except characters who aren't good at any offensive skills at all.) from fighting dragons effectively, considering that it's an important part of the game.

Fire primarily damages health.
Frost primarily damages fatigue.
Shock primarily damages magika.

It's probably closer to all primarily damage health, but each also has other advantages, fire can cause the most direct damage to enemies, and frost, aside from damaging health directly, can also slow them down, and lightning does both health and magicka damage.

I'll have to see if Fire attacks prove to be effective. Versus a beast that uses Fire as a attack option, I'm sure it will not be too efffective, but if the change in my Fireball's damage when used against a dragon is something along the lines of -20-30%, I'll stubbornly use Fire spells versus all the dragons I encounter. If it is something like -50-70%, I guess I'll use something else, even though I don't want to. Hopefully there are different types of dragons, similar to how there are different types of Atronach Daedra.

As for my alt. character, I'll have to see if sneak attacks can be used on a dragon. I'd suspect that you'd have to catch one off guard, as any that spot you won't let you out of their sight. I believe dragon fights with my Khajiit Assassin will prove to be harder than my Fire Mage. I will use dagger/bow combinations on my assassin so I'm hoping that there is a shout that causes you to become undetected and would allow you to get a stealth shot in, or at the very least a perk that increases the rate at which enemies will give up on tracking you after you've become hidden once again.

Pretty much the same strategy as for any big opponent: try to stay out of melee range while shovering them with spells. When magicka hits zero, draw out a second blade and use well-timed fast dual-sword hits to deal damage and dodge before it retaliates. IT all comes down to timing, skill and focus.

If I can block their attacks, then it's time to go Rambo on their behind; if not, then my strategy will be a little more 'conservative'.

..actually to hell with that, I'll probably just wade in and hit it with everything I've got. Armour ftw!

I'd say they all primarily damage health, any other effects (like slowing down, setting on fire, etc.) are secondary. If only fire would do major health damage magic would be nearly useless against Dark Elves. :P

Regretfully, we will no longer be able to create characters so butt ugly that the dragon will want to kill himself for laying his eyes on you, so I have no idea. I guess I won't be using a dagger, at least.

Killing a dragon! Scandalous!

I'll tame them with flower power of my lute playing skills!

... and a claymore to the heart. But that's just a detail.

I'm sure it was the lute that killed them, not the claymore.

Good luck if the dragon cast haste in itself...lol

Well i guess it will depend.
The main dragon attack seem to be Ognion+shoyu burp, as seen in the movie, since apparently we got a hold breath spell, it seem there will be a cat fight with clawing and bitting, so i guess anything is valid, from spear to shuriken in the eye passing by vomit stream in the nostril and plated boot kick in the groin.

Don t worry usually Bethesda does easy mode games as long you don t play jerkish, but if you do, then its your problem.

Joking aside the dragons seem to be basic combat, a smart dragon would have pushed the svcker over the edge, grabbed the shield and shaked it like a dog shake a rabbit to break is neck. Slammed the warrior with his tail as a golf club and tried a -2 par on the caverns below.

So it will be tailored for sword and shield or double handd axe, fireball thrown combat. I just hope it ll be hard and mean, but i m not worried cause if bethesda hasn t the gut to put a decent dragon, well, modders will.

I'll sneak up and stab it with a dagger. This will not work. I will then proceed to run like %@*&. When the dragon has all attention fixed on me and is flying after me as fast as it can I shall promptly walk behind a tree. THWOMP if not dead then at least very embarrassed .
