How is the book Infernal City?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:03 am

I never liked reading but when I read some books in oblivion it sort of changed my opinion on reading.
How is the book? Does it talk about anything with archery in it?

There are several threads in other sections. A mod should move this topic or lock it for you, and refer you to the thread. ;)

Too short to sink 12 quid into it.

This. Not worth the $15 I paid for it.

I read in a review that the book didn't have any closer, like it just kinda ended abruptly. I'm not sure who it is myself, but I've read a few review a few months ago when I was thinking about buying it and based off of those reviews I didn't want to spend $15 for it.

Agreed, I exchanged a book that my mom had gotten me (that I already had) that was five times longer and about half the price.

Other than that it had a decent story and a good take on the game lore. Although there's the one thing about changing what would happen with the Ministry of Truth....

First things first, if you absolutely hate reading books with a cliffhanger ending that will be countinued with a sequel, then don't get it now and wait until the next one comes out to get it. The cliffhanger at the end is so abrupt that it's entirely likely Keyes just wrote one big book and split it in two at one of the most climactic parts.

But if you don't mind that, then you have to consider something else. The main plot isn't all that interesting. All of the interesting things in the book are the bits of information we get about what's going on all around Tamriel at the time. Basically, if you really like lore, you'll like this book. The main plot is really just a distraction from the background lore, honestly. If you actually want to read a good story and couldn't care less about the lore, then this book is absolutely not for you.

I bought a copy that was in bad shape for one dollar. If you look around at used bookstores, you can probably find one. I haven't read it yet, so I don't know if it was worth the dollar yet. I could have gotten coffee.

Honesty, I thought it svcked alot of ass. One, it was way to short for the price which has been mentioned several times already. Second, the story to me just svcked. I think they could have found someone alot better to write it then what they did.

It was alright, but not worth the price. I get Warhammer books for half the price I got Infernal City, and they have a lot more substance and better plots.

I actually quite enjoyed it.

Keyes is quite a good writer and although at first things seemed a little awkward I found myself genuinely enjoying it by the halfway mark. Although some things in it made me raise my eyebrows (Coo for instance) it was still fairly enjoyable. I'll agree with what others said though, the cliffhanger ending felt like a smack on the face.

Sure it was short, but it was still a couple of hours worth of fun.

I just finished reading it today, I was going to wait for the second one to come out and then read them both back to back, but my friend brought it over one day and left it on the table.

I found the bits of lore were quite interesting, ad I found the characters were generally likeable. I felt that Keyes does a pretty good job at drawing people who are already familiar with the lore of the series deeper into it's world. I know for sure though that some of the references would have gone completely over my head if I hadn't spent so long on the UESP, the Imperial Library, and reading the books in the game.

The end was quite abrupt, which is really too bad because while the story is kind of meh, it's not bad, and I do want to know how it ends. More importantly, I want to know what happens to the various characters, and I want to learn more about Colin and the Penitus Oculatus.

I didnt think the price was too bad. Oh, and to "Turns-The-Page" the RRP is 7 quid, so you were seriously riped of. Sorry, you should have shopped around.

I picked it up for 4 quid. Which isnt too bad for what it is. The book isnt going to set your world on fire, but it distracted me for a couple of days. Thats really all I can ask for. I kind of enjoyed it, found the lore interesting.

So yes, I think I would recommend it. Just pay under the RRP, not over. :P

I found it immensely enjoyable, mostly the way keyes portrays the characters involved, but also how he generates the general atmosphere. I find the story unique and interesting, but it is a little short. Seriously craving the second book though.

I've been recommending that people borrow it from a library, through the interlibrary loan process for example, instead of paying full price; though I bought it at full price myself. Keyes is a better writer than "The Infernal City" suggests; since the Elder Scrolls mythos isn't his creation, he's probably less inventive with it than he was with his series "The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone". To me some of the details in the novel were stronger than the overall plot, as has been mentioned, especially his take on what it's like to speak to spirits, and his portrayal of the Khajiits. I agree that the character Colin was one of the more interesting ones, and through him we get hints of the organization that has replaced the Blades.

Does reading the book add anything to the gaming experience (or do you reckon it will add to the TESV experience)? I love TES but I'm not really into fantasy fiction, but would give it a go if it added to the experience overall. Is "Infernal City" the first book, or is it part of a series which only really makes sense if you've read its predecessors? I like it when the game references something outside of its' immediate reality, so if you get extras like this bleeding in from the book and vice-versa, I would be a happy bunny :)

It’s the first in the series of books. I think (emphasis on the THINK) there will only be two.

The book will definitely shape the political state of TES V. There’s so much that has changed in the world in this book. Its worth a read if you want to get the most out of TES V, but its short, I finished it over a weekend, so a loan from a library will do.

What it says about alchemy and the Khajiit is very interesting, and I’m sure will be expanded in TES V.

I thought about buying it, so I read a bit of it in a bookstore without actually buying it and decided it's pretty boring. I may actually read it one day, but for now I'll pass. Most books and movies based off of video games are nowhere near as good as the video game itself, at least in my opinion. Though I do enjoy reading the books inside the game itself. And you know what would be awesome? If they made a compilation book of every book in Oblivion. I'd read that.

Honestly, I felt like I was reading fanfiction. The plot that didn't really grab attention (although I did enjoy running through Hircine's Realm... That was awesome!), and if I must be honest, it felt a bit like reading mediocre fanfiction. Colin (the cop, right?) was a fascinating character; in fact, just about all the characters were well-done and invested with personality. I think the problem was that felt a bit like it was saying "OMGMUNDUSISINCHAOSAGAIN!!!". In itself, that isn't bad. But so many things sort of just "happen" without any explanation. By the end, nothing gets answered, more and more questions show up, and you're left wondering what just happened.

I was disappointed. Being stubborn, I will likely buy the second book, but more to get some sense of closure than out of any real enthusiasm. :(

Really all the characters were good from Mere-Glim to Sul. But then again Sul was a badass and definaly one of my favorites :flamethrower:

Definitely this.

I bought it online for a about half the retail price, so I didn't feel too ripped off. If you can find it at your local book mega-store, I would invest a few afternoons there just to read it for free while sipping on a latte. I will probably buy the second book, but more out of curiosity and wanting closure than anything else.
