How the hell are they gonna pull off fights with dragons?

Post » Tue Dec 14, 2010 11:41 am

I bet there will only be 1 dragon fight as part of the main quest and you will have an army to support you for it. The other dragons you have fight on your own and will be an actual challenge.

Probably in the tutorial, and it will tell you exactly how to kill them

I do believe my Drunken Nord will vanquish teh scaly beast by hammering it across the snout with a rusty old frying pan.

Lol.

Everyone showing genuine concern over it, relax. You'll know how it's gonna work eventually, and I'm certain they aren't overhauling the whole combat system only to have a silly, cheap battle with dragons. I'm always amused at the fact that people will play an Elder Scrolls game for literal years, and then not have any faith in Bethesda when a new one is being made. People who lost hundreds of hours of their lives to Oblivion will trash-talk it every chance they get.

Believe me, I knowww Morrowind had more complexity than Oblivion. I know Daggerfall had more complexity (relatively, considering the age of it and the tech it was on) than Morrowind. But constantly saying "This thing I have far-too-high expectations about had better happen, or I won't be impressed" is ridiculous. It's gonna come out. You're gonna play the crap out of it, and then you're gonna badmouth it to high heaven two years later.

I, for one, have faith in the fact that gamesas knows how to make TES games. I've played them. Fallout showed me that they're getting even better at it. And anyway, it's too late in the dev cycle for huge, sweeping mechanics changes. ;)

Well said sir. Very true and I completely agree. Since Dragons seems to be a major focus on this game I'm resting easy knowing they will make it awesome.

It doesn't always work like that. I loved the first Fable game, tolerated the second one, and when I played the third one recently I vowed never to play one again. People are just worried that the game will be too different from the other games to the point where its not like playing an ES game but like playing a crappy FPS game. I hope it plays like an RPG with FPS mechanics and not the other way around.

Sometimes if you keep making changes to a good recipe it ceases to be good anymore.

However, Fable was never that great, never anything like Molyneux promised, and basically failed to live up to most everything he said. This isn't like that. People have favorites and whatnot, but gamesas games are ALL generally solid.

Even the mighty Bioware can't claim that. For me, aside from Mass Effect and KotOR, they've had more misses than hits.

EDIT:

I liked fable 2 best.

-Dragon attacks
-BLOCK
-Dragon staggered
-Attack 3 times
-Repeat until it is dead

you don't defeat the dragons you sing a song and fall in love (Never tear us apart by INXS) but back on topic I would assume that their going to be brutal if you don't utilize your dragon speeches but at the moment regarding dragons all I'm hoping for is that they have good animations

Oh, god. Yes please. And bardic skill needs to be in specifically to govern your skill at singing with the dragons. Also, for the falling in love bit. Everyone knows bards make the best lovers.

I was tired and feeling weird. But as far as we know that is what will happen. It is anyones best guess as to what it will be like. Mine is just as valid as any other idea.

The holy book of the Casual Gamer states there must be Quick Time Events after striking the foul beast in the belly multiple times.

The dark and crumbling passageway takes a turn to the left. Turning the corner cautiously, the dancing flame of your spluttering torch reveals a giant boulder blocking your path. You sigh, exhausted from your labours to reach this point. Dragons, they said, dragons in the heart of the cave.

A faint beam of light catches your eye. A small crack in the roof of the cave, 'it must extend all the way to the surface' you think as the first rays of the dawn sun slice through the darkness and dance across the surface of the boulder. A rumbling sound fills, not the the air but the very rock itself and the boulder slowly rolls to one side. The rumbling persists, rhythmic, almost soothing. You chance a step forward, then another, then a third and...

POP-UP

I have found a dragon in the cave.
Luckily it sleeps during the day.
I must shout the magic word 'Snogard' and strike the dragon with my sword.

I like the point and click adventure style too :)

Same as behemoths(fallout) but they will come from the sky and spit flames
The animations are my biggest concern...

My guess... (barring a super weapon), somewhat as was done in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bovQVj0pFu0 (or more likely http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIlbQ2U_M0s; perhaps even as in Duke Nukem Forever).

First, you send your theif to set an ambush of traps before you trigger the encounter. Then have someone trigger the encounter, and as Firkrag gets closer and even still in the dialogue...POW! Right in the eyes BOO!.

Wait...um...wrong game :bolt:

OK,

How about tieing in the musical instrument thread and having a musician lull it to sleep so you can back stab it with poison and an uber finishing move!

erm...hmm

Luring it into the water so it drowns? Wait, they made the AI better

Well, I give up! I just don't know how to kill a dragon!

As with most problems in life you simply hit/shoot/blast it until it stops moving. Problem solved :D The screenshot from GI with the dragon on the ground breathing fire looks a bit intimidating though!

to laagamer:
So do we all have to carry bows to kill the dragons?

Or do all the dragons fight on the ground for our convenience?

Just run...I think it would be fun to run for your life in Skyrim while getting ambushed by a dragon...the GI magazine details it also...I think that early in the game you wouldn't be ready to fight a dragon...and escaping from it sort of provides that adrenaline experience you have in Dead Space or other ambush-like, fast paced scenes. Later on as you gain more experience you can start fighting them and actually kill them...so when you finally get to the end of the game...to Alduin...you'll have to run from him to get to a higher level and then you'll be able to kill him. (However, there is probably some plot element where you have to get like an artifact that can weaken him.) I have another speculation in a topic I'm about to post towards the fight with Alduin...

I would love something Shadow of the Colossus styled for dragon fights, but faster paced! Imagine the dragon gathering it's speed to fly up and bombard you and you have to jump and stab him on a particular spot or jump and grab and you are flying with him! And you have to work your way around his scales and body, and maybe he could crash into obstacles! That would be perfect!

I'm worried about this. Arena/Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion-esque predictable and largely boring combat wouldn't work with giant, flying monstrosities in any way that I can think of. The developers obviously can come up with much better ideas than I can, but I don't know how they can pull it off while having it actually be impressive. The best I'm expecting is some significantly improved combat animations to go on the old, grounded style, use of thu'um, and a decent-looking finishing move. If this were a God of War game, I would be more optimistic, but I doubt Bethesda's going to come up with revolutionary combat. I'd love to be proven wrong, but the less you expect, the more you appreciate.

im sure bethesda will think of something, also, i think bethesda plays their games on consoles, too... so if it caused THAT much of a serious crashing problem, they would've either fixed it, or never involved dragons in the first place.

then again... fallout 3 had some serious instability issues once reaching a certain [not all that big] file size, constantly crashing and freezing... and we never got a patch for it.

so... then again, maybe bethesda will completely screw us all over.

...ok, my faith isnt as strong as it was, simply because of how unstable fallout 3 is.

I never had that problem with Fallout 3, though I was playing it on a PC. I don't think I can remember any crashes at all as a matter of fact.

I usually hate QETs but they would work the best for the end part of killing a dragon. I don't want to just beat it with my word until it ragdolls, I want a visual experience.
